krige··on A Working Nintendo in ~1GB of Qwen Weights
Human brain does a lot more at any given time than just whatever you're consciously thinking about.
krige··on LLM Voice
Oh boy, more IP theft and copyright infringement!
krige··on Three new discoveries in mathematics, computer science, and physics
That's a whole another discussion though. You're bringing in manufacturing to the hypothetical, where it wasn't there before.
krige··on SS United States to be sunk as largest artificial reef
Or, as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU+rms
krige··on Genie 4
> Fluxer is the first Discord competitor that when you show to someone they can't say "well Discord does X better", and it was largely made using AI.

Didn't know that before, but considering its abysmal failures to scale, yeah in hindsight it does make a lot of sense. (one of) My group(s) tried to move and we came back to Discord rather quickly.

krige··on Three new discoveries in mathematics, computer science, and physics
That analogy is rather poor. Woodworking produces discrete, unique, and physical objects, that can be made, and found use for, as many times as the craftsman wishes. Once you discover a law of physics, you can't discover it again, and it's not yours to do with as you please.
krige··on 16-bit Windows (Windows 1.x, 2.x, 3.0, 3.1, etc.) on 64-bit Windows
Civ2 - well, at least its Test of Time incarnation - has specific patches to keep it running without external tools.
krige··on How to run a city builder on 16 MHz
16 MHz? Where the heck did the OP pull that number from? Is that a hallucination?

I ran it on 7 MHz 68k, and the PC port ran on an 8088 IIRC, slower still. Hell, the cover OP used for the post reads "XT/AT/PS2 compatibles".

krige··on The alien space of science: Coherent but cognitively unavailable directions
I'm on the other hand reminded of a certain Lem sub-story from A Perfect Vacuum, which was about geniuses whose discoveries were too divorced from the mainstream to be useful / worth following upon.
krige··on EA is shutting down BioWare
> If you noticed all AAA failures in recent times, almost all of them were live service games. Meanwhile the single player market seems to have finally recovering from the neglect it’s gotten in the last decade.

That's because almost all of them were live service games anyway. Do not put the chicken before the egg.

krige··on EA is shutting down BioWare
Well, a finger curled on the monkey paw, that's for sure.
krige··on Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier
Okay, now it's obvious you're just posting whatever to "win" a discussion without any familiarity with the subject. I suggest you start educating yourself by familiarising yourself with the Brimstone missiles, 1996 tech in service for over 20 years at this point.
krige··on Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier
Wrong on the first count (last I saw they were well below $200k a pop), and the second count comes with significant loss of anti-armor capability.
krige··on Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier
We've had this capability for years. We have had missiles that could identify a convoy, strike its front and back to block it, and then hit targets inside, all on their own.
krige··on '500-hour' Order of the Sinking Star is as complex and exhausting as it sounds
Solving 600 10x10 jigsaw puzzles in a row would easily exhaust you without posing any challenge at all.
krige··on Fire at Starlink site in Bulgaria after suspected sabotage in Poland
Lavrov is a known liar: you can tell by the fact that he's moving his lips. That's kind of his job, really: lying.
krige··on Fire at Starlink site in Bulgaria after suspected sabotage in Poland
Russia is exporting less than a day's worth of diesel per month. They don't have a surplus, they're trying to get US to stop Ukrainian attacks on their refineries, since they cannot do that on their own.
krige··on Starlink limit hits Ukraine's drones. The battlefield depends on SpaceX
Scram, Elon.
krige··on Apple's new 'Switch to Safari' campaign details why you should ditch Chrome
And Opera! God I miss old Opera.
krige··on Cyberattack halts construction of tunnel between Denmark and Germany
As always, there's a crucial difference between losing your finger in an accident and shoving your entire arm into a woodchipper while screaming that nothing can be done about it.
krige··on CFTC Staff Were Told to Retract Analysis of Suspicious Oil Trades
That's 2014. Hardly "previous regime".
krige··on AI models may soon self-replicate without access to data centers
Using a tired analogy, 9 pregnant women won't deliver a baby in a month.
krige··on AI models may soon self-replicate without access to data centers
Oh yes I can totally see a webos TV, that has bugger all storage, hosting a 22B parameter model /s
krige··on Attack of the Vibe Coded Photoshop Clones
Irrelevant.
krige··on Attack of the Vibe Coded Photoshop Clones
No, the backlash was because vibecoded decomps were trash, incomplete, and quickly abandoned once the attention rush wore off. You'll never guess what's happening to these!
krige··on Sharing AI progress in mathematics
> We should also remember that the Presidency is just one arm of government.

In the past few terms we have very bitterly learned that the President just does whatever he wants, the House doesn't do anything, and Senate is mostly interested in getting bribed.

krige··on Show HN: Entombed in a Raycaster
Ah yes, Lode's raycaster tutorial, the classic writeup keeps generating interesting projects. Such as this one.

The human ingenuity never ceases to amaze me. Take what's essentially a pong machine with a few extraneous bits and almost no memory, what you can do with it? Apparently racing games, building games, maze games, even honest to god space sims.

krige··on Watson Jr. memo about CDC 6600 (1963)
Yeah, but only once they managed to breed chickens as strong as an ox.
krige··on Adding Floating-Point Decimals for Fun and Profit
Possibly the first case I've encountered where image loaded before the text. A grid of 1px rectangles? How unsettling.
krige··on Before pixels: Modular industrial dashboards
Went around the internets to find the one I thought of and while I can't find it - doesn't surprise me - it was something very much like a cross between Denshi Block (connectors) and Braun Lectron (aesthetics)
