kripy··on Playa Phone
In Australia, Telstra is required to keep the payphone network up and running. You can make free outgoing calls to landlines and mobile phones. And I just read that you can call inbound as well (which I did not know). Now the fun begins.

kripy··on Meet Calc
Ever wonder much the meeting is costing? The clock is ticking. Head hours around the room. Wonder no more.

Introducing Meet Calc.

"Can everyone see my screen?", "You're on mute.", "Sorry, I was on mute.", "Let's circle back on that.", "I'll send a follow-up email.", "We're running over.", "Quick question...", "Let's take this offline.", "Can you repeat that?", "Sorry, you cut out.", "I have a hard stop at...", "Let's park that for now.", "Who's taking notes?", "Can we get five minutes back?", "I think we lost Esk.", "Before we wrap up...", "Action items?"

Select the number of participants, drop in the individual hourly rates, and hit Start meeting. Then start sweating.

You're welcome.

Correct. The Facebook Pixel Helper is used to test that the pixel has been installed correctly and events, both standard and custom, are firing correctly.

kripy··on Minus
> Clearly just for entertainment and not information Facebook alternative, in which GPT bots produce a significant fraction of posts, impersonating users and making stuff up. Everyone quickly learns you can't trust it, but it can still be cute/fun/humorous.

Billy Chasen developed faux-social network called Botnet. Unfortunately, it looks like it's gone and I doubt that name would have lasted long in the App store let alone how he managed to get it through.

kripy··on Visa and Plaid Abandon Merger After Antitrust Division’s Suit to Block
They're not hiding the fact.

From their website [1]: "When you choose to connect your financial accounts to an app using Plaid, you will be prompted to enter the username and password associated with those accounts. Plaid then links your accounts to the app you want to use so you can share your data."

kripy··on I Learned French in 12 Months
"The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) has created a list to show the approximate time you need to learn a specific language as an English speaker." [0] French ranks in Category I: you wonder if the same method would apply for a Category V language.

kripy··on Finding the real first post on Instagram
Facebook kept it a lot simpler: you can just iterate through integers. 1 - 3 have been deleted but if you navigate to https://www.facebook.com/4 it redirects to https://www.facebook.com/zuck and so on. All the original founders are sub 10.
kripy··on We All Work for Facebook
This reminds me of Matt Webb's piece titled "Instagram as an island economy"[1] where he writes about the concept of encoded labour: "Every "user" of Instagram is a worker. There are some people who produce photos -- this is valuable, it means there is something for people to look it. There are some people who only produce comments or "likes," the virtual society equivalent of apes picking lice off other apes."

kripy··on MacOS monitoring the open source way
Interesting that osquery is developed by Facebook and Santa is developed by Google. I do some work with Facebook and during a video conference with one of their employees the connection dropped out. When we reconnected I asked what happened and they said that the machine updated itself. I thought this was kind of an odd time to update and dropped it into the conversation and was told that their laptops are updated every day. Without an understanding of the inner workings of Facebook it seems like they may be snapshotting employee machines, daily.

kripy··on In Urban China, Cash Is Rapidly Becoming Obsolete
Contactless payment systems are prevalent in Australia. And even before tap to pay we were able to insert cards, enter a PIN and pay. What has happened in China is that they payment systems have been baked into the apps where, in Australia, this occurs at the terminal (EFTPOS as an example) which is app agnostic and tied directly back to the bank gatewys.
