krkoch··on Coffee grounds make concrete 30% stronger
My understanding is that crushed rock is inferior, as it binds too much water that weakens the concrete.
krkoch··on Can Applications Recover from Fsync Failures?
The storage just bought the farm, EIEIO.
krkoch··on VoCore – Coin-Sized Linux Computer
PoE devices needs an isolation transformer in order to be compliant, and it takes quite some real estate. However, so does 110V/220V, but i guess we're so used to "hiding" it in a wall-wart.
krkoch··on Colour-changing magnifying glass gives clear view of infrared light
Does this glass need a power supply, or do two ir photons join to make a visible photon? A reverse of scintillation?
krkoch··on Flatpak Is Not the Future
Hm, I've some problems with nix and desktop apps that needs opengl or similar machine-specific libraries. There are some hacks, and I also think nix comes very close to a good solution, but it's not 100% yet.
krkoch··on The Microsoft MFA system almost brought me to a nervous breakdown
Mobile BankID is running in the sim card, and transfers fine to new phones. Except the ones with embedded sims, i guess :/
krkoch··on Scientist says cleaning indoor air could make us healthier and smarter
For radon, we installed a suction fan inside our house that sucks air from under the house. That lowers the pressure under the house, and radon doesn't seep in. It made the measurements go from ~120bq to 20bq.
krkoch··on Winding down of Alphabet’s Loon causes job cuts
Sorts as almost last in Norwegian and Danish locale. (aa=å)
krkoch··on Why can’t you buy a good webcam?
Shameless plug: We're making good software defined cameras at huddly.com. "Plain" uvc, so it works on your favorite os.
krkoch··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
But the bank now owes you $1000 and your fried $99000.
krkoch··on Is there hope for IPv6?
We tried setting up automatic DNS records on dhcpv6 and slaac on our company lan, and we just weren't able (opnsense). We have ipv6 working, but it still doesn't "feel finished".
krkoch··on Smartwatches know you’re getting a cold days before you feel ill
I don't have the source right now, but I think you are more likely to spread germs when you fiddle with your mask.
krkoch··on Microsoft to Deliver Microsoft Cloud from Datacenters in Africa
Actually, they need bigger fans there because of the thinner air (high elevation).
krkoch··on How to Clear a Path Through 60 Feet of Snow, Japanese Style
On packed snow like that, you can even have an angle > 90 deg.
krkoch··on Norway to become first country to switch off FM radio
It's because the infrastructure for FM is quite expensive to run. Because of all the fjords and valleys, you need many weak transmitters to avoid reflections. Also, because it's FM, they can't overlap in frequency.

With DAB, two time-delayed signals (either reflections or multiple towers transmitting the same data-fountain) will enhance the signal. This means that you can have fewer towers.

krkoch··on Huge home-built computer used for Tetris
Nice. This also reflects my experience that the connectors often are the most expensive electronic parts :)
krkoch··on How to use Let's Encrypt with multiple domains on Nginx on Ubuntu
If you know how, please do tell or provide some pointers. It would be nice to set up at my site.
krkoch··on This is not a place of honor
I'm not so sure. Primitive mining in e.g. Røros, Norway goes back to 1740. Dynamite were introduced to the mine in 1870. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%B8ros
krkoch··on Hidden motors for road bikes
I think the current case where an athlete (Femke Van den Driessche) is caught with "bike doping", she was caught by "scanning" her bicycle with a smartphone, using the compass to detect the permamagnets in the motor.
krkoch··on Microchip Technology to Buy Atmel for Nearly $3.6B
I think AVR32 is dead (also UC3, AP7 died years ago). I've not seen any development the last years. I guess they don't want to compete with their own ARM's.
krkoch··on How to act less stupid, according to psychologists
> if you ask 100 people if they are better than average drivers, then you might not be surprised if more than 50% of them reply “yes”!

Isn't it fully possible that most people are better than the average? Most people e.g. have more arms than average.
