krmboya··on Global review confirms mRNA vaccines are safe, effective and full of promise
I agree with your points. But governments around the world frequently demonstrate that they can be easily compromised.

That's why free speech is an important counterweight to political power.

I credit all those who openly spoke out against the Iraq forever war preventing similar wars since then.

Yes, they being a doctor matters because it is a filter for someone who engages with scientific material and their opinion is more valued than some rando crackpot.

That said, what are your credentials? Perhaps I'm enganging some rando crackpot myself.

One word, transparency. Being open about the research and outcomes. This is a situation good science communicators can help with.

Engage the skeptics in open debate and address their concerns, not censorship and embarking on cancellation campaigns.

However uncomfortable it seems, the median person in society isn't going to do a thorough literature review to make up their mind, they'll do it based on personal instincts.

krmboya··on I'm 60 years old. Claude Code killed a passion
What do you all think about the "Solve It" method by the Answer dot AI folks?

It's more like iterating on the REPL with AI in the loop, meaning the user stays in control while benefitting from AI, so real growth happens.

Interesting thing to consider, in a couple of years, will there be a differentiator between people who are good at driving company-specific AI tools and those who are generally better by having built skills the hard way ground up with benefit of AI?

krmboya··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
Only that you are incorrect that Elon hung out with Epstein. Unless there has been some new evidence
krmboya··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
But is there proof Elon actually hung out with Epstein as the poster asserted?
krmboya··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
Did Musk really hang out with Epstein? I only saw email conversations between the two.

By contrast, Bill Gates and Reid Hofmann hung out with Epstein A LOT.

And Hofmann was Epstein's primary connection into the Silicon Valley scene.

krmboya··on Social media time does not increase teenagers' mental health problems – study
I know that self reported data is unreliable.

The person running this who was probably paid thousands of pounds worth of currency should have put in the time to produce a more accurate measure of mental health

krmboya··on Social media time does not increase teenagers' mental health problems – study
How reliable is this study given that participants were asked to self report?

Perhaps the reason people keep repeating it is that someone makes the statement without any reasons, provides an alternative again without any reasons.

"Why are you not using docker to sandbox your code?"

"Umm.. someone on HN told me docker is not a sandbox, to use randomtool instead"

krmboya··on Cloudflare is sponsoring Ladybird and Omarchy
Privacy is a big deal for many, especially if you grew up before the age of telemetry everywhere.

For now, a privacy preserving chromium fork will do, until hopefully the Ladybird project is mature enough to provide alternatives

Firefox doubled down on using/selling user data for advertising purposes, so that's a big reason for avoiding it.

I held onto it as someone who didn't even like the politics of the people behind it (the beauty of open source), for the sake of browser engine diversity, but changing terms of service of use of personal data was the final blow

krmboya··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
Statistics show that kids brought up with both parents have much better prospects in life.

The decision to have kids should be a deliberate commitment between the parents, not some kind of lottery where one falls pregnant then decides what to do next.

It's better not to fall pregnant at all otherwise

krmboya··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
The H1B path has always been harder than hiring remotely/offshoring
krmboya··on Xmonad seeking help for Wayland port (2023)
> When Wayland replacing X, lots of cool window managers and mini applications will be gone.

There's hope due to the recent x11 fork, xlibre. They intend to keep x11 support ongoing

krmboya··on Returning to Church won't save us from nihilism
When thinking about Christianity, I personally make the distinction between the Christian faith, and the various Churches i.e. the political institutions that grew around the Christian faith.

In its first few centuries Christianity was community-centered, until about the 4th century when it started getting institutionalized in Rome.

krmboya··on Dinosaurs to supercrocs: Niger's bone keepers preserve its ancient fossils
Great job in training nigeriens to pick up fossil preservation work. Glad the government is taking a rational approach in collaborating with the US based archeologist.
krmboya··on Wikipedia survives while the rest of the internet breaks
The editors mostly reference left-leaning media outlets when it comes to political topics, without providing a counterbalance from right-leaning sources, assuming it were a truth-seeking endeavor.

As a non American this is very obvious to me.

Even Reuters that was supposedly meant to be a non-biased media outlet is clearly left-leaning at this point

krmboya··on Python has had async for 10 years – why isn't it more popular?
Would this result in surprises like if a function is turned to async by adding an await keyword, all of a sudden all functions that have it in their call stack become async
krmboya··on Steve Ballmer Interview
How I interpreted it is that where there's a limited pool of women and promotion of women is encouraged, eventually you'll have some women who have worse leadership qualities than their male counterparts getting promoted over them.

Works both ways btw, if promotion of men is encouraged, you eventually have men of worse leadership qualities than fellow female colleagues promoted over them.

krmboya··on Survey: a third of senior developers say over half their code is AI-generated
My guess is if we assume the high level and low level programmers are equally proficient in their mediums, they would use the same amount of effort to tackle problems, but the kinds of problems they can tackle are vastly different
krmboya··on Family of MSFT employee who died warn tech companies not to overwork workers
As a non American who would benefit from a H1B visa, I'll say the "America first" people are right when it comes to the H1B visa misuse.

Currently it is used as a tool to extract maximum labour for cheap compared to hiring Americans. We don't call it slave labour because the immigrant is paid decently, but they are held hostage by multiple factors; career aspirations, family expectations and the like.. So easier to manipulate while denying opportunity for actual Americans.

Needs serious reform. A simple one is, pay H1Bs higher salaries than market rate. This would create the economic incentives for companies to use H1Bs only when really needed

krmboya··on Ask HN: SWEs how do you future-proof your career in light of LLMs?

krmboya··on Binance founder 'CZ' leaves prison on Friday
There is Binance US and Binance the global version. I expect Binance US to be tailored to US laws and regulations, but are you implying the global version is also under tight US govt control?
krmboya··on Linus Torvalds muses about maintainer gray hairs and the next 'King of Linux'
> pithy approach to interpersonal relationships

These things are highly contextual and highly subjective. Culture is very different around the world.

There are highly manipulative and malevolent individuals who know how to behave the right way when it comes to political correctness but lack objective directness that actually improves the situation long term
