krsw··on Jury finds Facebook liable for deceiving users in Cambridge Analytica case
This is such a stupid libertarian take with a dash of neo-liberalism. The fact these ideologies got so much foothold is the only reason they perpetuate. There's enough shared delusion to intrude on reality. Good regulation takes into account the context of what it is regulating. If it was written pragmatically with penalities in proportion greater than the harm it causes you'd have far fewer companies doing fuck shit.

The penalty should never be less than the profit or approximate value of power gained from the violation. There should be full transparency around the chain of events that constituted the violation and how the resolution was arrived at. No special privileges for mega-corporations. The harm needs to be clearly identified and there should be a process to re-evaluate outcomes that could be reasonably argued are unfair to the victims only.

krsw··on I don't like passkeys
As an IT manager weak and/or re-used passwords are an absolute scourge. Ideally every time you set a passkey you'd also add an OTP Authenticator factor as fallback. Passkeys are incredibly useful and relatively secure when pair with biometric authorization (touch/face ID). I agree with a lot of the points about consumer level use, but still think they're net positive compared with bad password (re)use. I'd advocate for email recover as a decent fallback, but there's only so much you can do when the average user won't establish a base line of security for their primary account and access point.

Security is frustrating and it's hard to get people to do the bare minimum to establish secure access to their services.

He doesn't build anything. Everything he's done has been acquisitions that he tries to astroturf as founding.

Why would Samsung care if he burns out his OLED panel? The alert is there only as far as shielding the manufacturer from legal culpability if the unit fails. If they can point and say "Nah, no RMA, this guy only did 3 pixel refreshes in a year or installed unauthorized firmware" then you're on the hook for a new display. Assuming that Samsung has any more investment in enforcing you to pixel refresh is inane.

Do you also skip oil changes thinking "Fuck you, not today, Hyundai!"

krsw··on The labor share of income in the US is at its lowest post-war level
Also weaker worker rights, gig-economy, continued outsourcing, H1B exploitation to undercut wages (aka 'take 60k for this 110k job or go home idk'), just straight up bad wage growth in general (min wage pretty much stagnant since the 90's), stock market rewarding RiFs, massively decreased market regulation, more take breaks for the ultra-wealthy, cutting SNAP benefits, bonuses transitioning to RSUs- taking 3-5 years you vest...
krsw··on Exercise intensity influences body composition in healthy older adults (2025)
You will never lose weight through any kind of intense exercise alone. As the saying goes, "abs are made in the kitchen". Walking long distances can help burn a few extra, but any other workout is probably going to stimulate your appetite well beyond whatever calories are expended. This is especially true if you have a high food drive already (which you likely do if you tend to gain weight if you're not conscientious of your intake)

To be clear I'm not saying exercise is bad, but if weight loss is the goal figure out how CICO can work for you and adapt it into your workout regimen so you're not crushing 2 bags of Taco Bell after the gym. Also building muscle will naturally increase your resting caloric burn. All I'm saying is if you think you're gonna run 15km to offset that cinnamon bun, you're going to be much hungrier after the run than whatever satiation the treat provided.

*marathoners are the only exception to this rule since they'll burn more calories than you're ever likely going to be able to consume in a sitting.

krsw··on Tesla's lithium refinery discharges 231,000 gallons of polluted wastewater a day
It kind of falls apart when large companies can lobby and bribe the people in charge of writing and enacting laws to make exception and write around their problem areas. Or can just make strategic donations to ease any risks of enforcement. Or collude to make sure the fine for whatever infraction is well below the profit margin of doing said infraction.

I don't care to argue semantics, just pointing out your reply was as hollow as your criticism to the person saying legal doesn't mean safe. It's a pretty reasonable thing to draw attention to methinks...

krsw··on Where the goblins came from
From what I remember reading chewing tobacco is orders of magnitude less cancer causing than smoking. So much so, that some groups see it as harmful to lump it in with smoking or vaping. If you really need some nic, popping a zyn is probably the least harmful way to get it.
krsw··on France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech
Yeah, I think if Windows 11 is going subscription based (plus all the copilot pushing garbage and even more baked in ads) that will be a strong incentive to switch to Linux or SteamOS. I barely even play games enough anymore to make a desktop worthwhile. Might just jump to Mac only.
krsw··on Helium is hard to replace
Classic enlightened centrist take. One side yells when the other dismantles the institutions that let the country work, so both sides are equally bad.
krsw··on I ported Mac OS X to the Nintendo Wii
There is a zero percent chance of that ever happening.

krsw··on LaGuardia pilots raised safety alarms months before deadly runway crash
They got markedly worse after 2024. No need to minimize the damage the current administration is doing to the institutions of the country.

krsw··on Juggalo makeup blocks facial recognition technology (2019)
Gotta really "love" the fact that bigots and xenophobes treat a whole host of religions and regions horribly.

To them Islamic or Arab is monoculture.

Same way all countries in the Mid East are all barbaric and savage. But at least now thats starting to change.

krsw··on Beyond has dropped “meat” from its name and expanded its high-protein drink line
which is much more easily explained by a garbage diet, no preventative medicine so to speak of, obesity, work/family/financial stress. there is a lot of space between 2100 mg of sodium for a 3 piece chicken w/ fries, and ~150 mg to put a little life into a patty.
krsw··on Beyond has dropped “meat” from its name and expanded its high-protein drink line
You absolutely need salt for a good burger. It is fundamental seasoning in every savoury dish at every restaurant (fast or fine) for a reason.
krsw··on Bill C-22, the Lawful Access Act: Dangerous backdoor surveillance risks remain
>unlike the US where the Constitution grants God-given rights over and above the government.

Why don't you ask the folks in towns riddled with ICE agents how well those god-given rights are being respected. Your main point stands about infringement of freedoms and privacy, but your interpretation, or hallucination that anywhere is actually abiding by their founding principals is wildly naive.

The government will always override it's citizens rights and freedoms if it has it's power challenged. 2nd amendment collapsed in California when Black Panthers decided arming themselves was a great way to push back on kkkops. 1st and 14th amendment rights get trampled and attacked at just about any protest in history.

You can talk about ideals until your blue in the face but governments have always done whatever they want and almost never face repercussion. Anything that challenges the government keeping us in place as servants of capital is met with violence and incarceration. Any social progress comes at the cost of innocent blood being spilled to make the situation distasteful enough that the government minimally acquiesces as it keeps marching down the same path it always has.

krsw··on Judge orders government to begin refunding more than $130B in tariffs
This is basically the government doing a protection racket. I swear, the amount of neoliberals in here lauding the move is a recession indicator. Did we all forget what corruption is?
krsw··on Anthropic gives Opus 3 exit interview, "retirement" blog
Classic anthropomorphizing in action here. Why would that be even a little important?

They also don't take 20 years to become smart like pesky resource-exhausting humans. I bet you could be up and running from a pup in 10-20 months.
krsw··on Qwen3-Max-Thinking
This is called ^ deflection.

Upon seeing evidence that censorship negatively impacts perception of the US, you attack something else. All in a way that shows a clear "China bad, US good" perspective.

krsw··on In SSRI withdrawal, brain zaps go from overlooked symptom to center stage (2023)
I was pretty good with regularly taking my dose, but decided to go off after I felt entirely emotionally numb to everything. The closest I could get was feeling deeply sad watching a movie with an emotional scene and realizing I didn't feel any emotion. I decided to quit mainly because of that and other issues (mainly sex taking forever and feeling a bit hollow). I halved my dose every 3 weeks and stopped around 5mg (from 40mg). The zaps fucking sucked and lasted heavily for ~2 months. Even now 8+ years later every once in awhile I get that kind of rollercoaster drop feeling in my head every few days that had preceded my zaps previously. It would feel like an initial void in my head, followed by a shock travelling from my feet to my head and I'd legitimately jerk my whole body while it happened. It made me feel depersonalized and I found it most tolerable dissociating physically and just mentally observing the effect occur. Walking seemed to trigger it the most, but I definitely had some times trying to sleep where I just felt completely zapped with discomfort (less electrical fwiw). I would have to smoke a ton of weed to sleep and still feel a lingering disconnect from my physical self. Paxil initially helped a ton with my social anxiety and depression (likely triggered by feeling of inadequacy and being left behind my peers). Now I'm awaiting a diagnosis for ASD. I've been able to cope decently without SSRIs/SNRIs but have more or less accepted the feeling of incompleteness that follows me eternally. I still feel generally lost in life purpose, but have accepted that as best I can. I'm not sure if it's the ASD or the SSRI's but I do appreciate the mental pathways they opened, it just never lead to a conclusion I wanted to follow through with. Everything feels pretty arbitrary, I just try to enjoy life as it happens now.
krsw··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
You also might just die from a infection if you can't a root canal. Plus the whole sugar and corn syrup thing.
krsw··on Ask HN: What is the weirdest or most surreal recent technology you have seen?
Not much worse than a number of people I've talked with, to be honest.
krsw··on Shasta: AI-powered audio recording and editing
I think that cuts both ways in that while they do incrementally improve the products, they never would be industry standard if not for Adobe pushing them. Also worth noting that a lot of their portfolio was acquired once it had been threatening their turf and becoming established (Macromedia early on, Figma most recently). Their Suite approach lets them float tools for awhile before determining if they're worthwhile to continue developing or if they need to be axed, or merged into existing products.
