krzrak··on Why do AI models use so many em-dashes?
I feel you... For 30+ years of my life I prided myself for writing without typos and other mistakes (without autocorrect), using lots of bullet points, dashes, and words such as "delve into" or "underscore".

Now I find myself intentionally adding typos and other msitakes, and using less sophisticated language, just to not be accused of using AI.

krzrak··on A conspiracy to kill IE6 (2019)
So profound. I'm keeping it to use later :)

krzrak··on Replacing my best friends with an LLM trained on 500k group chat messages
On a side note, I thought a little bit about that concept. For me, recreating deceased loved one with AI would be reigniting the grief all over again. I would want to avoid that.

Maybe, just maybe, I would be able to use it, for example, to see my grandparents who died ~30 years ago, as a curiosity, but still I'm not sure if I'd want to.

krzrak··on Windows 11 KB5023778 update adds promotions to the Start menu
That's weird, I have Windows 11 Home installed by the computer manufacturer but I don't recall having any ads. Is that because I disabled them at the start? (don't remember) or maybe because I have pihole in my network? Anyway - no ads for me.
krzrak··on PhpBB 3.3.10
PhpBB? Now that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time.

Thank you for your informative answer.
krzrak··on Notion AI – waiting list signup
> What are use-cases for this that people will actually benefit from? Creative writing - sure. Brainstorming? Maybe for very vague and basic topics that don't need any business context. But more than that?

Looking at my Linkedin feed: lots of lazy people excited about possibility of "creating content" like "100 blog posts on a given topic in a minute". So, in short: seo spam. Lots of seo spam.

krzrak··on One-night stands will be illegal at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar
it's disgusting to organize public, worldwide events in barbaric countries.

krzrak··on An original Apple-1 computer sells for $400k
From the careful wording of the offer it seems that it is extensively restored, rather than original in mint condition.

krzrak··on Under the skin of OnlyFans
> Often people seem to be happy for other peoples children to do what they like but not theirs. To me this seems like the wrong attitude towards ones neighbours.

I think you miss the important concept, that people can have different world views and different things might be acceptable to them. So I may not approve my kids/family/myself doing something, living some kind of lifestyle, but I accept that there are people who have different values and it's OK for me (as long as it doesn't infringe my freedom, of course).

Otherwise, we have religious fundamentalism.

krzrak··on An Unbelievable Demo
It would be fun to make the American guy sweating profusely by saying something like "I'm going to sue the shit out of you" ;)
krzrak··on Workplace Wellbeing Is a Scam?
> I couldn't care less for that chair or desk that the company offers. Work environment isn't about where I put my butt and my computer.

Lucky you :) Seems you didn't work on uncomfortable chair or on the kitchen table with kids running and screaming around. For me such basic stuff is very high on the list of priorities regarding work environment.

krzrak··on Hit Japanese app Crabhouse forced to change name on iOS
> It’s honestly amazing that there’s basically no way to run software on your iPhone unless Apple approves of every aspect of it, including the name.

Frankly, I'm quite OK with that. Just today I was trying out some apps for tracking baby sleep/feeding/pooping (my wife expects to give birth in a week) and on iOS it was pretty nice and safe experience, with clean apps and my only concern was usability and features. I remembered my experience with Android, where I would have to rake through hundreds of fake/buggy/malicious apps.

krzrak··on Where's the fastest place to put my server? How much does it matter?

It's funny to read that, until you realize, that it is exactly what humans are doing in regards to global warming.

Most probably, someone forced them to have this box.

The same in Polish.
krzrak··on Ask HN: Good Remote Work Literature?
I recommend the book "Work Together Anywhere" by Lisette Sutherland and her other contributions (i.e. talks). She talks on many aspects of remote work: starting from benefits and how to convince your boss, through team dynamics, to what tools to use.
krzrak··on Dropbox silently installed new file manager app on users’ systems
I recommend sync.com as an alternative. It works great, has end-to-end encryption and their support is very responsive (you can't say that about Dropbox's support).
krzrak··on Boeing Built Deadly Assumptions into 737 Max, Blind to a Late Design Change
> That is almost certainly not what happened. It is more likely a system of procedures and policies which failed. The company should take the hit, but unless an investigation reveals otherwise, I see no reason a single individual should take the blame for all of this.

Aren't the insane compensations of executives justified by their "great responsibility"? So I think it makes them eventually responsible for what their companies do.

krzrak··on Some Hong Kong companies change their name every couple of months
The name has nothing to do here, because companies are identified by NIP (tax id), so the name doesn't matter.

Probably what you meant is that new company is created and it takes over business from the previous.

krzrak··on How the Dreamcast Copy Protection Was Defeated
> But, and maybe I'm mis-remembering, how many people were actually active netizens at this point in history, able to find the ISO? Thinking back to when the dreamcast was a big console - I don't feel like it was common enough to really make a dent in dreamcast owners?

As I remember from my high school days, there were lots of people who were downloading ISOs (i.e. in their work or university, where they had access to fat 1Mb/s pipes), burning them and selling at a significant profit. Of course it was illegal, but still they managed to sell them through their friends or from improvised stalls on the weekend computer market, etc.

krzrak··on Developer on Call
The incentive is to get paid and don't have any issues to handle. And it works - we rarely have any issues off-hours, and if there are any - we are sure to quickly get rid of the cause, so we can continue to get paid for being on call without actually doing any work.
