laci37··on Ask HN: Is it just me, or is software buggier across the board?
I mostly feel this on Microsoft stuff. O365 browser stuff was always buggy, but last month I had to fight to zoom in on something in PowerPoint. Pagination in Azure ML randomly broke, it took them a month to fix it.

Atlassian is also a bug factory, but I did not expect anything better of them. Each UI update they did to Confluence and Jira just made everything more confusing in the last 10 years.

laci37··on Art of Roads in Games
I don't think that much is shared between streets and roads. Roads need all the details about curvature in the article so car traffic flows efficiently. Compare that to the beautiful but narrow streets of a Mediterranean town. Buildings are rarely parallel, angles are odd, but everything is on a human scale, and it just feels good to walk around.
laci37··on Show HN: Algorithmically finding the longest line of sight on Earth
If we have a 9 km mountain on an otherwise spherical planet (r=6371 km), the horizon would be 339 km away. With two mountains having a sightline between eachother the maximum theorethical distance doubles to 678 km.
laci37··on Ask HN: What did you find out or explore today?
Be careful what you believe from Balázs Orbán, as a Hungarian I can say he is mostly concerned to come up with a ideology to explain whatever Viktor Orbán is doing and not building a consistent model of world politics that drives actions.
laci37··on We are not here to make code
Thanks for this post! I have been looking for ways to make music in the last month and it helped me find strudel!
laci37··on Fossify – A suite of open-source, ad-free apps
This really tells a story about the sad state of android devices, that you have to use third party apps for basic stuff like the file manager to avoid spyware/adware.
laci37··on China's ancient water pipe networks show no evidence of a centralized authority
If they want to show that the infrastructure did not involve central planning, they should search for hacks. Stuff that is not centrally planned always ends up with hack where engineer A's domain meets engineer B's.
laci37··on Plans to cut speed limits ‘will significantly improve road safety' – minister
My typical drive to visit family is roughly 125 kms with a 130 km/h speed limit and 125 kms with a 110 limit. If I drove at 100 all the time it would take 25 minutes more. More than a bathroom break I think.

Honestly I feel that driving faster is safer for me, since I tend to zone out if I don't have to pay attention to overtaking trucks.

laci37··on Loose lips save sunken ships
Is cotton cultivation that bad in areas that were not artificially made suitable for the crop by the Soviet Union?
laci37··on Third-party Reddit apps are being crushed by price increases
IMO old reddit it atrociously bad for self posts and images as well. I would not have used it without Reddit Enhancement Suite.
laci37··on Radiation-hardened Quine (2014)
It pretty much is, but it's not rad hard in the sense that you can change or delete any one letter. Well, maybe in animals and plants, since we have at least two copies of most genes.
laci37··on Tape Storage Trundles On, Increases Yearly Volume to 128 Exabytes
I think AWS has a similar service where they send a van to your private datacenter that has a bunch of storage servers in it to help you migrate to S3. You plug the van in the network and start uploading.
laci37··on Pytz: The Fastest Footgun in the West (2018)
Implement everything in Zulu, then watch as the frontend ticket for proper rendering stays on the bottom of the backlog, because you always have more concerning problems than users having to do mental math on times.
laci37··on See this page fetch itself, byte by byte, over TLS
I only had an intro course in CPU architecture, but AFAIK pipelining depends on parts of the pipeline running on the same clock. I'd say CPU manufacturers already sidestepped this limitation by using multicore dies.
laci37··on What Is Type-Level Programming?
I think the author has left out a big piece why Rust enables better interface here: ownership. In C++ could the compile time checks prevent me from creating both an input and output type working on the same pin?
laci37··on Fourier analysis may help to quickly train more accurate neural networks
What a terrible article. This could be potentially interesting in my research but no citation to any original study, just vague descriptions of findings.
laci37··on Unidentified Halo, an anti-surveillance wearable project
Does your face feel warm, when the sun shines on it? Would it feel warm from a handful of low power IR LEDs? I doubt it. People underestimate the power of sunshine.
laci37··on Vimium – A browser extension that provides Vim-style keyboard controls
Keeping your fingers on the home row for basic navigation sounds pretty nice. It's not Stockholm syndrome, it's muscle memory.
laci37··on How to find a tiny radioactive source while doing 70 kph
I guess that was because they were afraid of it getting stuck in a tire. If I found a strange metal cylinder in my tires, I would probably pick it up a try to find out what it is.
laci37··on Ugly Gerry – Gerrymandering font
The Hungarian system is pretty much useless since the reform in 2013. Before 2013 party candidates that did not win the districts contributed their votes to the list vote totals. This is losers compensation. Since then we have a winners' compensation: winners also contribute their extra district votes (the difference of their votes and the second place candidate's) to the list totals. This exacerbates gerrymandering and pretty much guarantees the 2/3s majority needed for amending the constitution to Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party with their 45%-55% popular vote.
laci37··on TensorFlow for Python is dying?
I don't think that you need to know any of the underlying maths to make a neural network in TF/Keras. You need to know (not understand!) the building blocks, and what are they good for, but learning these feels like learning the difference between lists and dicts. You can do programming without it, but it will be ugly.
laci37··on No, you can’t manufacture that like Apple does (2014)
Most people take familiar medcine. I won't read the instructions in the n+1th pack of ibuprofen I'm buying.
laci37··on The Avogadro Constant And The Epoxy Putty (2018)
Estimating Avogadro's number to within 2 orders of magnitude from kneading putty seems very precise.
laci37··on GPT-4 could pass bar exam, AI researchers say
I got the same feeling asking ChatGPT about some basic logic and maths concepts. IMO GPT can find the relevant training data to regurgitate, but i don't think it connects concepts.
laci37··on The world is run by people no smarter than you
Everyone is subject to the Dunning-Kruger effect. IMO intelligence is more about how quickly can you adapt to a new field. Everyone will have stupid moments if they are thrown in the deep waters of an unfamiliar field.
laci37··on Map of the Internet
I looked up my university's /8 block, it's listed as North America, Hungary, BME.
laci37··on Humans can't endure temperatures and humidities as high as previously thought
I don't think there are any coolants that would be appropriate for life's temperature ranges at the right pressures that can be synthesized biochemically.
laci37··on I fixed my broken monitor with a hair dryer
I am not an expert, just a hobbyist. It's hard to tell anything without measurements. Either the regulators are half dead (factory spec for operating temperature is -40 to +85 C°) and should be replaced, or thermal expansion causes a cracked solder joint to touch again, or some other component is half dead and needs a bit of warmth to work properly.
laci37··on Hard to work with
We have 2 month notices here. Most people do knowledge transfers in their notice period. It's harder to slack off if your task is pair coding or explaining stuff to your peers. We waived this period for a few people, because they were negatively impacting morale, but they still got their salary. It's just the cost of firing someone.
laci37··on ReVanced
Same thing here. I'm happy to pay for Nebula. But I don't want to pay to a platform that is constantly criticized by all the creators publishing there.
