lancer383··on Docker Acquires Tutum
Indeed — just a couple lines of CSS and this page would be so much easier to read, as right now you really have to concentrate on the very act of figuring out what is on the page:

lancer383··on Apple WWDC 2015
Not always — sometimes they don't (2014), but sometimes they do(2013: http://www.zdnet.com/article/wwdc-2013-announcement-recap-ma...)
lancer383··on The day I was DoSed by Google
Silly question, but wouldn't putting something like Crawl-delay in the robots.txt file (somewhat) help alleviate the situation (if it is respected)?

Or maybe even just block crawling of the entire site except for the homepage?

lancer383··on JavaScript for OS X Automation
The AppleScript example feels like COBOL - in theory it's more readable, bit it ends up being that there is just far more room for error / ambiguity.
lancer383··on Amazon Fire Phone
I can't tell if you're joking or not - personally, I cringed and felt like I was watching an episode of Silicon Valley for much of that video.
lancer383··on Slick – Carousel
I really like this - I have played with FlexSlider when a responsive slider is needed, but it doesn't resize its slides as its containing element resizes. This does it in a much more elegant manner, and the touch events also feel quite natural.
lancer383··on Slick – Carousel
The page itself (not the slider), sets a fixed viewport, which means that a user cannot pinch/zoom the page on a tablet/phone.

Here is the code:

  <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1, user-scalable=0">
Removing that little "user-scalable=0" should fix it, as being able to zoom in on a page is a nice feature, and shouldn't be disabled unless there is a really good reason.
lancer383··on Tarsnap logo contest
Right, but the issue is that 99 out of 100 designers will do work for you and not get paid for it, while one will. There are some good links to thoughts about speculative work here: http://www.nospec.com/articles
lancer383··on I’m young, inexperienced and a perfectionist
At least for me, just understanding myself better has helped me cope with the difficulties I have.
lancer383··on I’m young, inexperienced and a perfectionist
Are you sure? I came right into the comments and did a Command+F for "ADHD", as this is what I thought as well.

Know that all types of ADHD aren't the same, and specifically that there is ADHD without the outward hyperactivity. Look up "Inattentive ADHD" - I am 30, and up until this past year I just thought that I had issues with procrastination, lack of follow-through, and was easily distracted.

Does this sound like you?

- Underperformed in school, despite being incredibly bright.

- Frequently didn't complete homework in school.

- Easily distracted.

- Shifts from one uncompleted task to another.

- Frequently skips large sections of text when reading.

- Procrastination.

- Frequently switches jobs

lancer383··on Label.css – an easy way to label DOM elements
While I like the simplicity of this, I would recommend to keep accessibility in mind: information put into a data attribute will not be accessible to screenreaders, and they would miss any information stored via this method.

It may make sense to append the label information to whatever is being used for the image's ALT attribute.

lancer383··on My Startup Failed. Fuck.
That and the landing page video — it was both cheesy, and patronizing to both musicians and their fans.

And after watching it I still don't understand the "decrease price by a dollar" pricing scheme.

lancer383··on Sucking at Retina
Not sure how well adopted it is, but Bourbon CSS's mixin for serving Hi-DPI assets includes DPI-based media queries:

    @media only screen and (-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio: 1.5),
    only screen and (min--moz-device-pixel-ratio: 1.5),
    only screen and (-o-min-device-pixel-ratio: 1.5/1),
    only screen and (min-resolution: 144dpi),
    only screen and (min-resolution: 1.5dppx) {
      width: 260px;

lancer383··on Improve [iOS] Usability with a Black Status Bar and Rounded Corners
While this only mentions native applications, the same could be done for web apps:

  <meta name="apple-mobile-web-app-capable" content="yes">
  <meta name="apple-mobile-web-app-status-bar-style" content="black-translucent" />
  <style>
    html {background-color:#000;}
    body {background-color:#fff; border-radius:6px}
  </style>

lancer383··on Lean Designs is now $9/month
As someone who does a lot of work wireframing sites and is always trying to make the move from wires to HTML and CSS take less time, this looks great.

Would love to see a fluid-width grid be introduced as an option down the line.

lancer383··on Lean Designs is now $9/month
Or maybe "given an automatic adjustment to the lower rate."

lancer383··on The iPad 2
Last week (when I posted mine for sale) Gazelle.com was offering $280 for a 32GB Wifi model with moderate wear and tear.

Would be interesting to know where it will end up and how much it will then be sold for in turn.

lancer383··on VideoLAN launches new website
To be honest, a lot of the front-end issues are going to be tough to fix for a number of reasons. There are 50+ instances of inline CSS styling on just the home page, and the CSS is minified so it's hard to pass on changes that can be made in Firebug.

As well, much of the copy on the page is using line breaks rather than new paragraphs, which is why you see funny spacing like in these examples.

While I do think the bulk of the design is quite nice, the HTML/CSS end of it could use some refactoring.

lancer383··on Mac App Store: Open for Business
I feel like developers will, an addition to building "Lite" versions, will start adding text to the production description that link users back to the website where they can download a full-featured trial version.
lancer383··on I'm Everyone, a live, anonymous image/video site (potentially NSFW).
Definitely see what you're saying.

Two things:

One is that it would lose the "I'm everyone" feel, as now there are identities of the authors.

Second part would be that just because you would use Facebook Connect to authenticate wouldn't mean that you would have to use their personal info on their post - they could choose between using their own info and using an alias that gives no tie back to who they are. Would just have to work on messaging so that people aren't scared away by the Facebook Connect logo.

lancer383··on I'm Everyone, a live, anonymous image/video site (potentially NSFW).
I really like this - very simple (although I am guessing there is a lot of complexity behind the scenes to make it so simple).

One idea — what about making people authenticate with Facebook Connect to post? This would help with concerns about bad content being uploaded, as well as give a little bit of info about the author, and down the road you could subscribe to posts by a particular author?

lancer383··on Invasion of the Apple Fanboys
Many people don't know there's a difference between the two, and Verizon has so well marketed the Droid name that many people have just started to call any Android phone a Droid — kind of like people calling any tissue Kleenex.

Notice I said Verizon has marketed this — even though Motorola was the first manufacturer for the Droid, Verizon has the Droid naming rights — hence the HTC-made Droid Incredible and Droid Eris.

lancer383··on Zawinski: iPad just-slightly insufficiently futurey
I would love to see Retina Display picture quality on iPad, but can you imagine the resolution of that screen?

Today the screen is 132 ppi - taking that up to 326 ppi would make it somewhere in the vicinity of 2528x1896. Would Safari then be blowing up web sites so ~960px width sites don't look tiny on that resolution?

lancer383··on This is the best "we're hiring" image ever drawn
What's even more concerning for me is that it is "15 Days of Paid Time Off." Not sure about Dropbox, but at a previous employer of mine that meant "15 Days of Vacation/Sick Time."

What a terrible article.

From the article:

> "The bill has the vehement support of Senator Jay Rockefeller, who last year asked during a congressional hearing, “Would it had been better if we’d have never invented the Internet?” while fearmongering about cyber-terrorists preparing attacks."

They leave out the fact that after that he finishes his sentence and says "and that's a stupid thing to say."
