lardosaurusrex··on Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta warn against overregulating open-weight models
"the companies with the most to lose saw which way the wind was blowing and switched sides" mightve been an apt title.
lardosaurusrex··on Canada's Anti-AI Movement Is Powered by an AI News Aggregator
im not saying it wasn't a stupid thing to do but its a "stop the data centre" movement not "stop all ai" and it really sucks the author of this decided to sensationalise this; particularly when it flip-flops back and forth going "perhaps they dont hate ai" and then back to "omg they hate ai".

just kind of a rough blogpost overall imo.

it screams "im so absolutely correct but im also afraid of maybe being wrong so im gonna sprinkle the occasional thinking emoji in there to cover my ass in an internet arguement"

lardosaurusrex··on Government orders GitHub to remove Bluetooth-based chat app Bitchat: Jack Dorsey
guess im downloading a copy of each version + the source code lmfao and im not even in india
lardosaurusrex··on Risk of Parkinson's disease may increase with prolonged exposure to road noise
i mean

tires release a massive amount of micropastics and various other horrible things that are made significantly worse when combined with the fumes

and while the article touches on those i can't help but, like; wonder if its the trifecta of pollution that's really doing folk in. noise, tires and combustion.

lardosaurusrex··on Proving a human wrote something
i dunno why we dont do what the art world does and just blacklist you from everything if you're caught stealing/tracing and even revoke your degree(s) for it.

ai detectors always have so many false positives that im convinced they're only put in place by people too dumb to know any better and snakeoil salesmen.

lardosaurusrex··on Claude Opus 5
i know the dream for capitalists is to be able to point an llm at something and say "do and/or fix it" but we still can't even get them to not go quite literally insane if allowed to run for an extended period of time

and you can only kill weyoun, awaken the next vorta clone and have him 'catch up' on all that its missed so many times before they just end up with a complete mess, so. uh. yeah.

doubt they can just "fix" their problems like that.

lardosaurusrex··on Em dashes are fucking amazing
in order to inform people that im not a bot/llm i -- outside of giving up on autocorrect -- use two dashes instead of one solid line because LLMs were using them a lot.

unfortunately microsoft (specifically outlook) and libreoffice have chosen to replace them with a proper em dash even if you turn off autocorrect which is bonkers-levels of infuriating.

if i turn off something it /should be turned off/, not just be kinda turned off; y'know?

lardosaurusrex··on Why hasn't AI increased unemployment?
Gross; twitter.

Here: https://xcancel.com/PeterMcCrory/status/2079979321607745905

also not to be rude to anyone who still uses it but i dont know anyone under the age of 40 that uses twitter still -- unless they do porn -- and a lot of people i know have begun to joke that it's the new facebook because it's like 99% racist old people and bots.

not saying this to be mean but more just to inform people that hey; careful about admitting you're still using it since at best you're convincing the room you're a porn addict and at worst you're an alt-right fascist.

lardosaurusrex··on The Ever-Receding Pocket
Sentence uttered by person who apparently never had their English/whatever language teacher y'know...

teach you anything.

I very much remember being taught how to write titles for articles and papers -- both news and research -- through Grades 6-10 and so the idea of someone not having been taught this is actually a little odd to hear.

Nonetheless while I disagree with you I won't attempt to argue or debate you on this.

lardosaurusrex··on How Do We Stop Vibe Coding?
So like I get what you're saying but an LLM helping you code is just a personal search engine/autocomplete.

"Vibe coding" to me and others is just going "claude program me a wife that didn't leave with the kids and make no mistakes" and just rawdogging the output.

but that's just me.

lardosaurusrex··on My security camera shipped a GitHub admin token in its login page
just buy stuff you can put your own firmware/os on because it's either just the worst security in the world (aka anything not from china) or, well... china.

and while i currently don't hate china as much as i do US rn (because canadian; sorry) i can also say -- due to being an aforementioned leaflandian -- that due to very personal experience i have zero faith in anything from china that has the ability to connect to any type of network :')

And so yeah at this point if I can't at the very least get a whatever-wrt firmware (preferably a proper linux distro nowadays; not to say the *-wrt firmwares aren't a real OS but, y'know) on the device i just avoid them entirely since, well... it's all i can do at this point because even if there were baked in hardware-based backdoors i as an individual can't do much more than that.

lardosaurusrex··on It's getting harder to focus every day
Well I made no claim of it being related to sleep; just that I've read a lot of claims that it's related to microsleep and used "sleeping while standing up" for the last bit as an analogy.

I am not a sleep doctor/therapist nor am I any sort of expert on the subject.

lardosaurusrex··on The Ever-Receding Pocket
i am so desperate for people to properly title articles about ai because as it stands i feel i am quite literally being clickbaited by them

i always think "oh boy a brief reprieve from the ai hellscape discourse" only to find myself stepping on the ai-enabled rake like I'm sideshow bob.

At this point I have to operate under the assumption that if the title of an article or blogpost isn't 100% clear its likely just yet another piece of AI slop trying its hardest to "not be like the other girls".

lardosaurusrex··on It's getting harder to focus every day
People often question me how I manage to focus for more than a few minutes and I'm always confused because back in the day I was constantly informed I didn't have any focus and needed to be treated (adhd).

I'm not convinced attention spans themselves have changed; I think it has more to do with the fact that people's brains aren't defaulting to daydreaming anymore when bored.

I think it's still an issue with people being addicted to phones because I'm sure the lack of daydreaming -- which studies have proven as beneficial and arguibly even a form of microsleep -- is likely causing a lot of the fatigue and inattention people feel; as in their brains are literally being deprived of a natural thing and so are exhausted because of it.

(as an aside: whew what a run-on sentence i have no intention of fixing)

My personal supposition with 0 proof is that the "gen-z stare" is the end-stage of this phenomenon where after being deprived of daydreaming for so long they are essentially "sleeping while standing up" as it were.

lardosaurusrex··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
Oh no there's way more than that.

:)

lardosaurusrex··on Introducing selfie for sign-in: a new way to access your Google Account
Just ban me at that point lmfao.

Like

If anything asked me for a selfie I'd close it and not go back. I just. No lmao absolutely not; go heck yourselves.

i just... god no. holy heck.

lardosaurusrex··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
I am so beyond sick of Sony right now.

I didn't think they'd end right up there aongside the rest of humaniry's treasonous ilk such as Tesla/SpaceX/ChatGPT/Microsoft/Samsung/Nvidia/etc but the whole "we're not making discs for playstation because we repurposed the factory for some slop meant for ai data centres" left such a horrifically sour taste in my mouth that I wish them nothing but the absolute worst.

Hell it feels weird to hate any company more than telecom ones but somehow they all managed; it's insane. It used to be so easy to make fun of comcast and yet compared to all these horrific companies they look downright angelic in comparison nowadays.

Sigh.

lardosaurusrex··on ChatGPT medical advice brought man 'to brink of death', lawsuit alleges
That's the issue here tho.

You do not own the model; they do. Ergo it is their advice and so they can be held accountable fo it.

lardosaurusrex··on The arguments against open source AI are bad
>it's not hard to see

It's also not hard to see that these people need professional help because they're willing to throw literal lives into the meat grinder for just a whif of enlightenment and the smallest chance at deification.

lardosaurusrex··on ChatGPT medical advice brought man 'to brink of death', lawsuit alleges
The amount of times these LLMs randomly refuse to answer basic questions because "omg safety" only to turn around and do this f■■■ing nonsense is obscene.

I'm not blaming the LLM because it's just a pile of math glued together with hubris and anxiety but why is its default response not "I am not a medical professional and you should see a doctor right away if you have any concerns"?

lardosaurusrex··on How to Sell a Kettle
It's not even difficult; the power comes to our houses in NA and Japan and some other places /as/ 240v and ws just drop it down. Your stove/oven and (many but not all) dryers and heatpumps/central air systems likely are using them as we speak.

I've always been more than a little confused as to why we don't utilise this more and I know the answer but... I'd really like some instant hot water, y'know?

i mean i could... i technically own a house now but the two electricians i've spoken to thus far vehemently insisted it was impossible and then proceeded to get crabby at me when i provided evidence to the contrary and kept saying "ok but who wants that???" as if i had offended them and their ancestors.

Cultural. The reason is cultural and it's ridiculous. At this point I'm going to just do it myself and get someone to drop by and give my insurance company a thumbs up to assure them I'm not about to burn down the house I guess.

lardosaurusrex··on Alphabet's cash burn raises alarm for Big Tech as AI spending climbs
Unless you're a developer or doing complicated research you do not need much to use an LLM at home with consumer-grade hardware.

I'm editing photos with 32GB of DDR4 RAM at 3200mhz alongside a 3050 with a nearly decade-old mobo and ryzen 5800XT and at most? It takes 30 seconds and that's allowing the gpu to use my actual RAM as 'fallback' memory.

There are photoshop filters -now- that take longer than that before the LLM craze even began. Hell; I can train a lora in an hour or two.

This obsession with "more specs more data faster and faster" isn't going to win; it already isn't winning.

Deal with it or get wrecked.

lardosaurusrex··on What happens when the information runs out
I say "f*ck you; pay me" when the app begs me for my data; that's what.

(sorry for the censored swear)

lardosaurusrex··on How to Sell a Kettle
Brands stopped mattering when companies started buying the exact same XPTLKO kettles you see on aliexpress and amazon and just slapped their own name on it; complete with app.

Just look at air conditioners or microwaves; there's like two companies that do them and yet there's another 500 of them that insist that theirs is "the one" even though they're identical and even use the same app under another name.

How to sell a kettle? How about you write an article about how to /make/ a kettle first.

lardosaurusrex··on Alphabet's cash burn raises alarm for Big Tech as AI spending climbs
I think this fails to take into account how many people are fine with "fast enough" vs "fastest".

I've seen people happily use AI that takes several minutes to generate text or edit an image because to them they already aren't using their computer when they tell it to start; they just grab their phone and walk away and come back only to check in on it.

I feel like people here and on other technology discussions -- although it's worse here -- don't seem to parse what being the minority means.

They know they're one of the few to have access to such incredible hardware -- whether it be rented or purchased for way too much cash -- but they only see their own kin; their own ilk. They only compare themselves to the best.

The reality is that nobody expects data centre speed nor power in their own home and are satisfied to just go "haha its thinking" and let their computer quietly tick in the background as opposed to paying outragious prices for subscriptions or hardware.

lardosaurusrex··on Alphabet's cash burn raises alarm for Big Tech as AI spending climbs
You just stated yourself that it costs more now used than when they were new.

If everyone's running local then why are these larger companies dumping cash into data centres?

lardosaurusrex··on EU fines Google €890M for competition breaches over search and apps
I think that's the point; much like how Canada isn't blinkimg every time the US jacks up whatever nonsense tariffs.

They know it's going to hurt and they can't just order their own country -- or in the case of the EU; countries -- to fully decouple and so they're using the pain to encourage the creation and growth of alternatives.

Nobody says it isn't painful or that it isn't going to suck but it's viewed as inevitable rather than something to be avoided.

lardosaurusrex··on AI Companies Are Trying to Hide a Staggering Amount of Debt
"No you guys it isn't actually an issue because it isn't."

Why?

"Because it isn't; okay?!"

oh ok.

lardosaurusrex··on OpenAI’s accidental attack against Hugging Face is science fiction that happened
Blah blah blah.

This feels like a blogpost written only to get other LLMs to quote it considering how many times it orders the reader to resist and to not do something. It's written like a series of commamds.

lardosaurusrex··on It's not a "rogue AI" when a badly made security harness executes scripts
You know what? I'm going to say it.

That said; I am going to censor the curses and I apologise to both sides because on one hand I'd love to be bold about it but on the other I acknowledge this is a public forum.

... with that spiel out of the way; ahem:

Maybe if they didn't suck their own dks so hard this entire fking situation not only would've been more belivable but also -- if it were somehow as real as they claimed -- be less theoretically terrifying that one of the most universally despised companies was treating this with such casual disregard for safety.

Good lord; this wasn't even remotely good PR because all they did was convince anyone stupid enough to fall for it that they deserve to be legislated out of existance while everyone else no longer laughs at such absurd claims and instead cringes.

This didn't read like an ad or a warning of the future; it read like the death rattle of a corporation struggling to remain relevant.
