largepeepee··on Did a 1997 merger ruin Boeing?
Exactly, the 737 was the highest-selling commercial aircraft before the incident, and the MAX was promised to be a simple but efficient upgrade to that popular series that many already had.
largepeepee··on Bill C-18: Google to remove news links in Canada over online news law
What's new?

We have been using that same excuse to block out Japanese and Chinese goods in various eras.

Just feels weird the Canadians are copying our playbook

largepeepee··on How AI can distort human beliefs
You can summarize it as

"they want more control over the people"

And AI seems to be another tool being twisted to do that

largepeepee··on Former Dolphin team member addresses Steam/Valve’s takedown of Dolphin emulator
Well they are also discovering that many people would rather pay the 20-30% extra than deal with the hassle of a subpar platform.

The cost to build/maintain a competent platform is also not cheap even for the big boys like EA.

Which speaks to his point, once upon a time Sega would hog their IPs for their console and arcade games.

They changed their strat abt a decade ago.

largepeepee··on JPMorgan Chase and Co tracks employees to dystopian extents
You do realize once this is normalized, it wouldn't even come as a surprise to have them eventually mandating company devices to be on when at home and so on.
largepeepee··on Fake scientific papers are alarmingly common
You know what's funny? Even if the numbers are hot garbage, they proved the point about how easy it is to publish fake science papers, since it got published.

Kinda similar to those researchers years back who proved how easy it was to go into certain social science journals as long as you copied their ideology.

largepeepee··on When you lose the ability to write, you also lose some of your ability to think
It's also useful to point out that historical verbal tradition trained a very specific type of memory recall but that doesn't automatically make anyone wise.

Just because you memorized 10000 random articles on Wikipedia, doesn't mean you now have the wisdom to apply that in a particular circumstance.

Very much like early AI models.

largepeepee··on I'm never investing in Google's smart home ecosystem again
I feel like it's not only products that get left behind once Google gets bored.

Many of Google's software eventually get worse too. YouTube for example has killed most of their social features by removing dislikes, limited searchability of videos by channel, allowed bots to fill the comments. And Google search has so much malware in their ads that pop up first, that even govts are recommending ad blockers by default.

Such a pity, Google used to be the most respected of the SV big tech.

largepeepee··on OpenAI ignored the ‘have a problem to solve’ rule, says president Greg Brockman
Obviously it didn't work out for meta. That isn't even up for debate.

Meta has admitted to pivoting to AI and cutting down their metaverse teams significantly.

Besides, even if Apple succeed. Meta will still be stuck in the exact same situation - under Apple's boots again, which it so desperately tried to escape from by going hardware heavy in VR in the first place.

largepeepee··on Wind farm in Germany is being dismantled to expand coal mine
Politics in Germany is heavily sentiment driven and shorter term populous focused. So you are effectively blaming the public.

Besides these decisions were mostly driven by the company seeking profits not politics.

So you are wrong.

largepeepee··on JPMorgan Chase Bank Assumes All the Deposits of First Republic Bank
That is how capitalism works in reality.
largepeepee··on Wind farm in Germany is being dismantled to expand coal mine
Same reason why we have ex-US generals working for foreigners like the Saudi govt and no one seems to care.
largepeepee··on Wind farm in Germany is being dismantled to expand coal mine
It makes sense in a cynical capitalistic way.

Energy company builds green energy farms to milk govt credits/funding and getting good PR to cover their "dirtier" energy sources.

Govt credit period eventually expired, and price of coal exploded so company decides to exploit some of the many coal mines they were sitting on.

Not sure why other commentators run off-topic about something like this when it comes to Germany.

largepeepee··on JPMorgan Chase Bank Assumes All the Deposits of First Republic Bank
That is modern capitalism at its finest.

Privatize the gains, socialize the losses.

largepeepee··on Chess is booming among teens
Sure Netflix played a part but a larger portion of the growth was probably from popular twitch streamers/YouTubers who picked up the hobby and brought their young communities with them to chess tournaments vs other similar streamers etc in recent years.

It's become like a social status among people to have a decent elo, a horrible marker for intelligence but a growing popular one.

largepeepee··on Italy lifts ban on ChatGPT after data privacy improvements
Switching entire business models to exploit the market, after receiving goodwill contributions/collaborations under their nonprofit model already sets a bad precedent.

So I don't think they have a clean record now, and people are simply wise to be skeptical.

largepeepee··on Why does a plastic-wrapped turkey sandwich cost $15 at the NYC airport?
Depends on the country as well, some country airports with high item tax make it worth buying at the airport.

Take the vice tax for example, most Islamic countries probably at alcohol cheaper at their airports.

Same goes with countries that have items with pricing power, I always get certain gifts at Japanese airports since the price it usually cheaper with tax free comparative to the rest of the country.

US airports though... Never worth it. Overpriced af

largepeepee··on The four-horse race to decarbonise steel
"the last 30 years of anti nuclear opposition have lead to 1000s of deaths, 100000s of people less health and more cost then any theoretical nuclear accident."

Where are you pulling these numbers from? Your ass?

The last 30 years were also one of best times to be alive as an average person on the globe generally.

How nuclear idiots can spin everything negatively is pretty funny.

largepeepee··on NZ’s biggest data breach shows retention is the sleeping giant of data security
Maybe they don't want record because the data also holds incriminating evidence of how they understaffed the maintenance crew and skipped upkeep to fill their pockets in the short term.
largepeepee··on Former Hiroshima Branch of the Bank of Japan
From your own wording, even you don't quite believe that propaganda.

Esp since both nukes and fire bombings did far more damage to civilians structures at that point.

Even if you ignore the wanton destruction, Russia flipping over to allies and cornering Japan by that time would have been enough to destroy Japanese moral as much as the fire bombings did.

So really the excess use of force by that time wasn't really needed, and trying to justify it now sounds like making poor excuses at revisionism.

largepeepee··on Former Hiroshima Branch of the Bank of Japan
Saved from total annihilation? They more than proved their point with the first nuke, the second nuke was more "fun" field testing.

Esp since civilians were the main casualties and they could afford to shop around for locations.

largepeepee··on Teen-age fentanyl deaths in a Texas county
He is pointing out the voters perspective which is valid and rarely reflected on social media since it is innately selfish.

At it's core this is a social issue that is swept under the rug for decades since the real solutions requires harsh reform that will likely destroy careers for pursuing it.

Drugs are a strong form of control, not just for the peddlers but to appease the masses from their painful reality, something that certain branches might like with AI and stuff reducing the usefulness of labor.

largepeepee··on Web fingerprinting is worse than I thought
You don't want to be fingerprinted means default options for everything Firefox can do it on
largepeepee··on [dead]
The recommended solutions by google focused groups is...they don't have a solution for VoLTE since it was removed from the pixel devices in 2021.

https://9to5google.com/2023/03/17/wi-fi-calling-off/

pixel 7 is apparently safe since they added it back in but older models have no ability to turn it off.

Guess the answer is to remove battery. Thanks google.

largepeepee··on Google discontinues Google Glass for enterprise
Exactly why google sucks at it.

You get promoted for launching hot new products, quickly scaling it or fixing obviously broken ones.

The boring grind in-between them is much harder to show value so few teams are motivated to work on it.

largepeepee··on Credit Suisse sheds nearly 25%, key backer says no more money
And if you bought bought regional banks at the bottom a few days ago you'd be up 500% on shares alone.

If you want to gamble, might as well buy real banks instead of fake banks anyway.

largepeepee··on KGB Defector Yuri Bezmenov 1985 Interview – Idealogical Subversion
Very strange how anyone asking for sources abt any politically charged issue on social media gets immediately attacked.

No wonder social media starts to circulate the most bonkers things when no one is allowed to question even verifiable statements.

largepeepee··on Signal says it'll shut down in UK if Online Safety Bill approved
We don't even need new tech, Switzerland for example has been doing direct democracy like this for ages.
largepeepee··on Signal says it'll shut down in UK if Online Safety Bill approved
These days I have a hard time telling the difference between either, because no one in a democracy will ever vote for crazy policies like having surveillance cameras pointing at themselves or having increasing harsher laws on freedoms both online and offline.

If so many important things are not up for the vote, is it really a democracy?
