largote··on MoviePass database exposes 161M records
We need a GDPR equivalent in the US. That's the only way this will change.
largote··on Firefox is back. It's time to give it a try
I'm way too invested in Chrome Sync to change browsers at this point.
largote··on The War on Waze
Until you find something else to be up-in-arms about.
largote··on Rent out GPUs to AI researchers and make ~2x more than mining cryptocurrencies
The silicon itself gets effectively no wear and the board is actually better because it doesn't get heat-cycled as much.

The fans are in a bit worse shape, but those tend to be easily replaceable if they fail.

largote··on Rent out GPUs to AI researchers and make ~2x more than mining cryptocurrencies
That's a nice word-salad you got there.
largote··on A pessimistic vision of India’s looming environmental and economic collapse
One of the biggest flaws of democracies is that they strongly incentivize policy makers to follow short-term gains over long-term goals.
largote··on BMW's Apple CarPlay annual fee is next-level gouging
No Honda or Toyota is going to drive anywhere near as well as the equivalent BMW. Even considering modern BMWs.

Pay to play.

largote··on Automakers: Don't Ask Customers What They Want
KIA/Hyundai have asked customers what they want for a couple years now and their cars are some of the best in their respective segments.
largote··on Apple Buys Shazam to Boost Apple Music
Personally, the only person I know that uses Apple music instead of Spotify or GPM works at Apple.
largote··on California updates laws around salary and criminal histories of job applicants
I'm guessing that pay scale would cover base salary, but not necessarily equity/bonuses?
largote··on American Airlines Accidentally Let Too Many Pilots Take the Holidays Off
I'd laugh in the face of anyone who asked me to work more than 40 hours for more than 2 weeks a quarter.
largote··on Tesla Roadster
Still to see if it can do it over and over again like the sports cars it's billed to compete against.
largote··on Tesla Roadster
You don't use AI for that, you use a bunch of sensors and adaptive power or braking vectoring. Calling some heuristics "AI" is a massive stretch.
largote··on It’s time to give Firefox another chance
Is there a plugin for it to use Chrome sync? I'm way too invested in Chrome sync to lose it at this point.
largote··on Street View of 80s NYC
New York has really come a long way.
largote··on KSQL: Open Source Streaming SQL for Apache Kafka
Fun fact: KSQL is the code of the airport closest to Oracle HQ (San Carlos airport).
largote··on Why Is Google Building a New Operating System from Scratch?
IMPACT
largote··on Why Is NumPy Only Now Getting Funded?
Because it's an important tool for Machine Learning, which makes money from that (of which there's plenty going around right now) flow into it.
largote··on Trump administration has plan to scrap ‘startup visa’ rule
That'd go against Trump's business interests though. So I think it's highly unlikely.
largote··on SoftBank Takes $4B Stake in Nvidia
Except most of your examples don't make "the same thing" as the companies you're comparing to.

For the ones that do, like nVidia or Google. The technologies are orders of magnitude more complex now than when they took over their competitors.

largote··on CRISPR eliminates HIV-1 infection in live animals
That's where the real money is.
largote··on Instagram Stories hits 200M users, surpassing Snapchat
That's like comparing the stability and speed of a Chevy Cobalt and a Kia Rio.
largote··on 10GHz at under 1V by 2005 - The future of Intel’s manufacturing processes [2000]
Those very deep pipelines are the reason NetBurst was very good at some tasks but not so great for general use. They made branching mispredictions be really expensive as a pipeline flush would result in a large number (~20 IIRC) cycles to be "wasted".
largote··on Apple Said to Work on Mac Chip That Would Lessen Intel Role
Apple does not have an x86 license.
largote··on Sony and LG stop making 3D TV sets
The only worthwhile "Smart" TV feature is having Google cast built-in.
largote··on Facebook Doesn’t Tell Users Everything It Really Knows About Them
That'd be a legal hot-mess for Facebook.
largote··on Maps that show the anatomy of America’s vast infrastructure
Agreed. A city proper is definitely not an isolated social and economic "unit"; therefore limiting comparisons to it will not give you the information you really want to make decisions.
largote··on Oh right, about those LEDs
The company the author refers to in the article is not Chinese.
largote··on GPUs for Google Cloud Platform
I wonder what kinds of cores will be available and whether that will be visible. Optimizing your code for a particular GPU architecture can have massive performance differences, much more so than for GPUs.
largote··on Why Twitter Must Be Saved
Twitter's not going to go under. It just won't grow to FB/GOOG/AMZN/MSFT size (at least not under their current strategy), and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
