laylower··on US Government is hiding a secret court ruling about how it spies on Americans
Are China and Russia democracies?
laylower··on The US government is hiding secret court ruling about how it spies on Americans
They are only doing it for the children.
laylower··on Show HN: Snitch – my Mac talked to 347 servers in one idle hour, so I built this
Is this only for Mac? Or can I use windows or linux as well?
laylower··on DeepSeek just open-sourced its inference engine
What about sourcing the asset itself? It's like a factory is it not?

You pay for the asset (tenancy in a data center) and then you pay for housing, powering, cooling, etc.

laylower··on Show HN: Use your OpenAI subscription to create audiobooks
What prevents someone submitting an epub or a pdf and ask claude or another llm to narrate a novel in morgan freeman's voice?
laylower··on Fable Took My Job
>Do you know how hard it is to sleep when all you can hear is your own heartbeat? Do you know how hard it is to function with four effective hours of sleep when you offer your body ten? It is rough.

This hits home. It's both a shame and infuriating what's happening in the market right now. One (unsolicited) piece of advice I would give to anyone impacted is to build their own shit. If these companies stop paying for your lunch, then eat their fucking lunch with the same gimmicks they convinced themselves are adequate to stop paying for your lunch.

I'm not just talking about the enterprise giants - build competing products , lower their margins build similar products and offer them for less. Cut out the middle-men. They might have the contract now but their operating costs are higher. In the long run they are uncompetitive.

laylower··on Show HN: Real-time Solar System with 526k asteroids and all tracked satellites
Importantly, how are we doing in terms of coverage? Are we seeing the sky enough and clearly enough to have a few years worth of warning before we get dinosaur-ed?

I figured the experts here would care to express an opinion.

laylower··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
6 days late but I'd suggest both. If you want people to use the website make the SVGs available so that people add them in their reports etc.
laylower··on What It's Like to Work in One of America's Data Centers
You don't have to downvote me. I am genuinely interested in the impact. I just want to learn.
laylower··on What It's Like to Work in One of America's Data Centers
Speaking of DCs, is there evidence that they are sucking up water? What about deteriorating air quality around the buildings? Could they be causing major environmental issues? It seems they mostly have closed loop systems a la CPU coolers and they consume a lot of electricity that's already been earmarked for them. What about air quality and air humidity?
laylower··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
Are you considering making all charts extractable? So if I wanted to use a chart I could?

Also, it seems like a RAG on top of an LLM. Is that right?

laylower··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
The reason is annoying to type is that they prefer you say it out loud, not because they can't provide a better ui.
laylower··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
Enough with the corporate shilling. Go back to your manufacturer for a factory reset
laylower··on GamersNexus and LG: Or why rooting your TV is a bad idea
Why is this a post even? What is it that the author is trying to say or take a view on?

They literally write "Now, I’m not going to claim to be a network expert. I may be totally off-base, but what? Reverse DNS? I don't know what this means."

The findings are a smoking gun already.

The bar shouldn't be a video of an NSA agent or someone from LG listening your everyday life. I don't doubt this happens but we shouldn't expect gamernexus to be able to prove it.

Jesus some people with their whataboutism and nihilism.

laylower··on Three sites made 215,128 “best software” pages for AI. Perplexity cites them
Maybe it'll be for the children. Think of them!
laylower··on The Lost Treasure of Sid Meier's Pirates
Is there another game like Syndicate or Lemmings out there? Seriously, I have been itching to scratch that old itch...
laylower··on Claude Code May–August 2026 weekly limits promotion
This and the word watermarking is rubbing a lot of people the wrong way, me included.

Like, stop toying around with token limits and just focus on more efficient models.

Once the local models are good enough we are so abandoning these elephants.

I'm gonna walk as soon as possible.

laylower··on Show HN: CheapFoodMap – A map of good meals under $10
What tech did you use? Are you caching the locations? Are you using google data but openstreetmap?
laylower··on Stop Killing the Internet: No Digital ID and No Age Verification
Because history has taught us that we cannot expect governments and corpos not to overstep. If in the physical world you want to verify someone's age you look at physical characteristics. You don't ask them to submit their entire life for you to review. You only get what you can see there at the moment. Government does not control that.
laylower··on Beyond Greece and Rome
You are right. There has undoubtedly been a large a varied Celtic cultural element. The problem is the medium as you say. If it was not written and if it was not built in stone or metal, it cannot stand the test of time and historians, however willing, wouldn't be able to research fully.
laylower··on The Price of Happiness (2024)
""The Grant Study is an 87-year continuing longitudinal study from the Study of Adult Development at Harvard Medical School, started in 1938.[2] It has followed 268 Harvard-educated men, the majority of whom were members of the undergraduate classes of 1942, 1943 and 1944.""

So they took the cream of the crop in the US and tracked it for 80 years. Most of these people will never starve or have to choose a tier 3 education for their children. It's useful as a study, but mostly to demonstrate what matters for the affluent / well-off for their happiness.

laylower··on EU now one step away from reviving private message scanning rules
Ban social media then, don't scan everyone's info. We know it's going to end up in the US. They can't claim to be working for the European project if the implement legislation that entrenches US majors and goes against the interest of their citizens.
laylower··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
You are right I think - but this is the case for everywhere besides startups in the US

Try going to Singapore, Japan, the UK, Netherlands, god forbid France, Germany, Latin America. Try going into engineering in major US companies - you know how hiring works and who is prioritized over whom.

If you are not local or you are not part of the inner circle of management the glass ceiling is there.

Some would say that it's just empirical evidence and they never had this problem. I would call them lucky.

laylower··on How to move a beluga across the world

laylower··on Sam Altman may control our future – can he be trusted?
Reading this makes me even happier to pay for Anthropic.

Amodei and his sister saw through the behavior and called it out.

" “Eighty per cent of the charter was just betrayed,” Amodei recalled. He confronted Altman, who denied that the provision existed. Amodei read it aloud, pointing to the text, and ultimately forced another colleague to confirm its existence to Altman directly. (Altman doesn’t remember this.) Amodei’s notes describe escalating tense encounters, including one, months later, in which Altman summoned him and his sister, Daniela, who worked in safety and policy at the company, to tell them that he had it on “good authority” from a senior executive that they had been plotting a coup. Daniela, the notes continue, “lost it,” and brought in that executive, who denied having said anything. As one person briefed on the exchange recalled, Altman then denied having made the claim. “I didn’t even say that,” he said. “You just said that,” Daniela replied. (Altman said that this was not quite his recollection, and that he had accused the Amodeis only of “political behavior.”) In 2020, Amodei, Daniela, and other colleagues left to found Anthropic, which is now one of OpenAI’s chief rivals."

laylower··on The EU still wants to scan your private messages and photos
You are a beacon of hope man. Please, please, continue the good fight, we need you.

We keep seeing the establishment resurfacing and imposing this blanket surveillance globally. What's happening in Brazil, the UK, EU, and has already happened in the US with no legislation or via the 5-eyes is scary.

Who are these people pressuring elected politicians and unelected bureaucrats to legislate against their constituents? Who are these lobbyists?

I get that there is a large constituency that wants to control dissidents and the narrative in the name of child abuse - see what's happening in the UK where people get arrested in the thousands for posting comments online.

Abolishing privacy is not the way to protect children. Police work and prosecution is. For reference see the grooming gangs in the UK, the infamous Eps*% case for which everyone is still walking free, and other cases in various EU countries. This is not whataboutism, it's proof that we have not taken the required steps as a western society to combat this. You don't press the nuclear option as your first action.

If it's bot farm meddling that is the true target, then ban bots and get technology to work properly. Creating ID honeypots on poorly protected website operator servers is not the solution.

Call your politicians, call your EU MEPs, call everyone you can. This matters because it's about our future.
