lebrad··on gPodder: A simple, open-source podcast client
On Android, AntennaPod has excellent integration with gpodder.net servers (which you can self-host), and is also free software.
lebrad··on Windows 11 upgrade tool that bypasses Microsoft´s requirements
The best technique to do this, which I just used tonight is to use the Windows 10 media creation tool to create a USB installer. Then use the Windows 11 media creation tool to download the Windows 11 ISO. Then copy the install.esd from the sources folder of the Windows 11 ISO over the one on the Windows 10 USB stick.

That creates a Windows 11 installer that works on any PC that meets the requirements for Windows 10. At first this installer will even say that it's installing Windows 10, but it actually installs its esd payload, which is Windows 11.

lebrad··on VPN users unmasked by zero-day vulnerability in Virgin Media routers
Comcast makes you downgrade to a business account if you want to get a reverse DNS entry from them. Reverse DNS is a requirement if you want to host your own e-mail and not have your mail categorized as spam. Comcast business accounts don't allow you to use your own DOCSIS modem.
lebrad··on Debian 11
We're about to experience a dreamy period of numerical software versioning where Debian, Windows, and macOS have all gone to eleven
lebrad··on Updated GNOME User Interface Guidelines are now official
I'm excited for the Debian 11 release this weekend, because that means the testing repository unfreeze will allow Gnome 40 to come into play soon
lebrad··on Windows 96
Microsoft is begging for the next counterfactual Windows version to be Windows 9
lebrad··on Full Throttle
The soundtrack to Full Throttle rules. At one point in the game, the radio plays a hilarious country song about a guy who loves living in the post-apocalypse.

  The population is greatly decreased.
And now the odds are greatly increased,
that I may someday get a chance
  to kiss your lips.
I thank the lo-o-ord each day
  for the apocalypse.

Folks are mostly disfigured or dead,
but sugar, I wont let it go to my head.
My mama's face has dripped down into the dirt.

But I'm still chasin' chitlins, whiskey and skirt.
Here's the song on youtube: https://youtu.be/lnD82Xh3cts

During the pandemic lockdown, David Bowie's son Duncan Jones wrote a screenplay adaptation of Full Throttle:

lebrad··on Pixar Has Released RenderMan for Blender
Blender rules. It's awesome to see this little Dutch program become such a consummate piece of free software.

It's a flagship Linux program. It's accessible enough for nerdy artists and also deep enough for computer graphics experts.

It's polished. It costs zero dollars. Hell yeah!

lebrad··on Windows 11 will leave millions of PCs behind
I used a new computer to install Windows 11 onto an SSD, then I pulled out the SSD and popped it into an old computer with no TPM and and an unsupported third-generation Intel CPU. It works great!

lebrad··on Apple Now Selling More M1 Macs Than Intel-Based Models, Says Tim Cook
It's probably also selling more than the 68k and PowerPC Macs combined
lebrad··on The divide between political parties is smaller than we think (2020)
In 2000, Ralph Nader supporters called this idea "the two-headed uniparty"

lebrad··on Do You Think Steve Wozniak Owns a Hackintosh?
Yes of course Steve Wozniak has a hackintosh, just like Mel Gibson's secret bar mitzvah
lebrad··on The Senseless Danger of the Military’s New “Low-Yield” Nuclear Warhead
The US has possessed low-yield nukes for a long time
lebrad··on Wi-Fi Alliance Brings Wi-Fi 6 into 6 GHz
The auto industry deals with this by assigning cars a "model year" which is the year after the calendar year in which they start being sold, thus you can buy 2021 cars in 2020.

lebrad··on Dell updates popular XPS 13 laptop with 16:10 screen, IR camera
The reason to get the Developer Edition is to endorse OEM Linux support
lebrad··on Google Announces Pixel 4
I'm using Google/Motorola's Nexus 6 with LineageOS, which was released a year before your iPhone 6s and it still gets the latest updates.

Meanwhile, my mid-2011 Mac Mini was cut off from getting macOS updates after High Sierra last year. But because it allows the installation of other operating systems it still can dual-boot the latest Windows 10 and the latest Debian Bullseye just fine.

The only way for any general computing device to last is if it gives the user freedom to control the software that runs on the device. All iPhones suppress this freedom which means game over for longevity.

lebrad··on Ask HN: Is Anyone Using Oracle Linux?
No
lebrad··on Turning the Nintendo Switch into Android’s Best Gaming Hardware
I installed Ubuntu on the Switch using some of these methods.

The best part is that one MicroSD card can store Nintendo games and another MicroSD card can store a complete Ubuntu install. Switching between Ubuntu and the native Nintendo OS just requires a card swap and reboot.

Ubuntu even works in docked mode with a monitor and peripherals, so this hack adds the capabilities of an entire GNU/Linux computer to the console.

lebrad··on What’s this xfinitywifi network and why do I keep connecting? (2016)
Comcast piggybacked an xfinitywifi hotspot on the Comcast Business router they installed for me.

When I asked Comcast to turn off the hotspot, they told me to disable xfinitywifi using the Comcast Business web-based administration page. However, toggling the options on the page failed to disable their hotspot.

Comcast said that I had discovered a bug, and that as a workaround they could disable the hotspot manually from their end. This also failed to work.

In the end, I had them replace the router with a much older wired-only model.

lebrad··on Mac mini Late 2018 Teardown
Contemporary SSD storage only takes up as much space as a pack of gum, just like sticks of RAM. Even SSDs with terabytes of capacity! Any desktop computer, even a small one, has all the physical space needed to have upgradeable storage.
lebrad··on Was Wittgenstein Right? (2013)
The argument about science replacing philosophy is constantly presented as a nuanced conundrum.

But there really are scientific questions and there really are philosophical questions.

For example, when two cars crash, science can in principle tell us exactly at what speeds they were traveling, what the drivers were doing, and all the physical details.

But as humans we want to find not just what happened but who's at fault.

When we ask questions about guilt, we're asking a non-scientific, philosophical question.

Understanding precisely what happened is important in assessing guilt, but only up to a point. I don't mean questions of physical cause and effect, or even of legal guilt, but actual culpability. If you think that question is answerable, then you're in the realm of philosophy.

Questions of credit and blame lead to questions of good and bad. If you believe that ethics are a real thing, then every decision has an ethical dimension, and science can't really help with that.

The best attempt I've seen at reconciling science and physics is by Bob Doyle at http://www.informationphilosopher.com/

We were able to shave 1mm off of the skin by removing the sweat glands. When you start to feel hot just stop what you're doing.
lebrad··on MacBook Pro with i9 chip is throttled due to thermal issues, claims YouTuber
Dave Lee's youtube video is a withering takedown, presented dispassionately.

His argument is such a slam dunk that the article concludes with stunned disbelief, speculating that maybe there's "something wrong with the MacBook Pro with Core i9 chip that Lee received".

Yes there's something wrong with it, that was the exact point of his video. Do people really think he just got a lemon?
