left-struck··on With 86% of the words, you might understand only 38% of an anime's lines
I think the rarest words in your sentence are “information” and “sentence” yet you can drop both of those and figure out your meaning, especially if the sentence is part of a broader conversation.

“Rare words carry the most” basically conveys what you’re saying but just more vague. And I think that’s a really important distinction. Rare words reduce ambiguity and increase the specificity of your sentence, but they don’t necessarily carry the most meaning.

left-struck··on Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain
Ah but the good news thing is actually nothing to do with Spain and everything to do with news in this era. It’s a problem everywhere that news is like 95% bad, and not because the world is getting any worse either.
left-struck··on Wikipedia's Cleanup of AI-Generated Content
From Wikipedia’s own guidance:

“An article should not be a complete presentation of all possible details, but a summary of accepted knowledge regarding its subject“

left-struck··on Micron Taiwan increasing salaries for factory workers by 2.7X
If there’s really little barrier to entry to a job and a high pay, you have very little leverage as the job holder, if your bosses don’t like you there’s a hoard to replace you. It’s not a position I would envy.
left-struck··on Sigma Says the Compact, Modular FP2 Is the Ultimate Hybrid Camera
People used to shoot 100iso film without tripods or IBIS… (and still do)
left-struck··on Sigma Says the Compact, Modular FP2 Is the Ultimate Hybrid Camera
I think many viewfinders have a mechanism that can adjust the magnification of the viewfinder regardless of whether it’s electronic or not because it’s an optical adjustment. Old film SLRs even have this.
left-struck··on Around a dozen banking apps began specifically permitting GrapheneOS
I just wanted to mention that my criticism of the original post comes from a place of love for GrapheneOS and its mission. I really wanted to know what the official 12 banks are because I want to consider using one of those banks.
left-struck··on Around a dozen banking apps began specifically permitting GrapheneOS
This post is awful, the link posted here is to a social media reply and even that reply does not contain a list of the 12 banks, it does however contain a link to a much larger list of banks, which are supported but not necessarily officially supported.
left-struck··on Around a dozen banking apps began specifically permitting GrapheneOS
This post is actually really bad for a Hn post, it appears to be a reply to someone else hence the lack of context here, and the link appears to be a list of banking apps that are have some level of compatibility at all, not the official 12.
left-struck··on Reforming English Spelling
I would argue that if we’re going to simplify English we should use one letter for i as in the sound used in knife, and one letter for i as in the sound used in niff, rather than having some other letter in a completely different part of the word (and later in the word no less!) modify the sound. How ridiculous our language is!
left-struck··on Reforming English Spelling
I wonder why the e is needed on the end of knife or nyfe. Seems to me the way you pronounce it would be the same with or without
left-struck··on Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans
I actually think it’s true that a barely majority of humans do prefer to conform or “be wrong together” than be alone, you only need to look at the increasing global polarisation and the way people stick to their team, to suspect it.

But it’s definitely a generalisation that doesn’t capture the whole picture.

left-struck··on If you don't run your own LLM proxy, how do you know whats going on?
I like the content but I have to say the Mark Manson writing style is off putting.
left-struck··on Woman arrested after blocking delivery robot in Center City Philadelphia
Regardless of whether you or I think it’s a worthy cause, I’m just pointing out that the police amplified her voice.
left-struck··on Woman arrested after blocking delivery robot in Center City Philadelphia
The police only helped her cause by arresting her I imagine.
left-struck··on So you think you could be an electrician?
I know some electricians who would call this man an idiot. PPE is for when a hazard cannot be avoided, which in this case it could easily have been avoided. Though of course the safety culture and laws differ from place to place.
left-struck··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
Actually they could have touched the wires as long as they touched only one and nothing which was earthed, but that might be pretty complicated to learn by trial and error, especially if error often means death.
left-struck··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Huh, my experience was that it was really easy, I just needed to add a payment method from the new region, which to be fair may be hard if you’re not a resident of that region.
left-struck··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Read TFA
left-struck··on Attention is all you have
I realised this about advertising once when I was listening to the cicadas in summer, brands are like those cicadas, they have to shout louder and louder to be heard, to survive. It’s a tragedy of the commons, and what separates us from the animals is that we do have the ability to reason about it and change it. It doesn’t have to be this way.
left-struck··on A Necessary History of the Oddest Letter: W
Well as an English speaker i can tell you when I see symbols around or attached to an otherwise “normal” looking letter and I don’t know how they modify the sound then I just ignore those modifications. I mean, what other choice do we have, if you don’t know how it modifies the sound you can either guess randomly or stick with what you know haha.

So in other words, those English speakers likely don’t know what the tilde means.

left-struck··on A Necessary History of the Oddest Letter: W
I’ve always wondered what native English speakers get wrong in this way in various other languages. Anyone got any anecdotes?
left-struck··on How Hacker News ranking works: scoring, controversy, and penalties (2013)
Yes I second this, HN is one of the least argumentative places I’ve encountered on the internet. Now people disagree with each other a lot, but it’s usually quite respectful compared to most of the internet.
left-struck··on Don't Make Job Referrals Public
This is not a good defence against being scammed. Like if this is part of your strategy on not getting scammed you should probably go back to the drawing board.

In other words, you’re defense strategy against being scammed should survive talking to someone from these places

left-struck··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
I’m not against self driving cars, but if I can’t sit in the back of the car, legally, and read a book while it drives me to work, it’s not self driving is it?
left-struck··on Adversarial Fashion Makes a Statement on AI Panopticon
I don’t know how effective these are but it’s kinda not the point to me, the point of the clothing is a loud statement saying “I’m not okay with being surveilled all the time it’s normal and okay to to feel that way”
left-struck··on Apple's Dimensional Drawings
Nothing that CAD and engineering students would be familiar with.

There are some open source options but those aren’t taught at school afaik.

left-struck··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
This is not a conspiracy, just normal human behaviour. The loud voices are loud. People are complaining about cars that do collect data. Do you see ANY comments about any manufacturer that doesn’t do this? The only time I’ve ever seen a comment like that was regarding older used cars.

All it can tell us is that maybe this is something tesla should market (if it’s true) rather than bullshit like “self driving”

left-struck··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
If you think about the history of abuse wrought upon the public by tech companies in regards to personal information, then the reaction really isn’t that surprising.

Are you really surprised that people are suspicious? Really?

left-struck··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker (2003)
Yeah I totally get it. In this situation you could see employees burning out because of the lack of management or leadership and the chaos of the company. Like everyone cared at first and tried real hard but eventually almost formed a learnt helpless. The implicit message was don’t try, just do the bare minimum and avoid trouble. We were also paid minimum wage. Many employees were doing unpaid hours as well.

If you provided leadership in your case then I think it’s different

I think the thing that really made it horrible is like I said. The boss would say x needs to happen but would not think through the details, buy the equipment, allocate the time or human resources. Someone still had to work out how to do those things and who was going to do what.
