lenomad··on Google took three months to remove scam app that stole over $5M
If you plan to do a charge back on Google, better be prepared to lose access to your entire Google account [1] including Gmail.

lenomad··on Europe is edging towards making post-car cities a reality
I think the GP's point is that talking on phone can be done without disturbing anybody else when you're in your own car
lenomad··on Slack enables customers to control their encryption keys in enterprise version
> You are mandated to take a vacation of at least 2 weeks every year (once you reach a certain level), the idea being that any “off books stuff” you may be doing would get exposed.

That's an interesting way to fix a problem!

lenomad··on Google Maps Dark Pattern: Enable Web Activity to Set a Home Address
I had seen this before, but then it stopped appearing. Turns out I had been lured into turning web activity back on somehow.
lenomad··on Google Maps Dark Pattern: Enable Web Activity to Set a Home Address
Web & App Activity is basically the collection of each of your interaction with Google that was recorded. It includes the list of all websites you visited while logged in, the time that you opened any app on your Android phone, the locations that you've visited etc.

It's a pretty scary list when you first see it and can be viewed/managed at https://myactivity.google.com

lenomad··on Google terminated our business via our Google Play Developer Account
It was Zoho. Their registrar took down their main domain after a few phishing reports.

lenomad··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
Widget Workshop [1]

It was a electronics tinkering game where you had different components like timers, light bulbs, switches, gravity testers and what not, which you could connect with wires and build interesting things.

They had several demos that you could check out, like poem generators, dog barking sound generator machine and other interesting stuff.

As a kid, it really helped fuel my imagination to make new contraptions out of random things.

I haven't seen an alternate that works on modern systems or phones. The original version, I believe, worked only till Windows ME or so.

lenomad··on Ask HN: Do you suggest static site generators to your customers?
That's very interesting. Is any of this code open-source?
lenomad··on Ask HN: What do you use in your New Tab window?
Unsplash Instant[0] is my favorite. It shows a new background from Unslpash for every tab.

"Lorem ipsum" on the Installation page!
lenomad··on Why do people keep coming to this couple’s home looking for lost phones?
It should work only for those phones which came with Avast factory installed. After you do a factory reset and turn on phone, they send an SMS to contact their server. This gives them the phone number which can then be used by the server to send remote commands to the phone.

One of my phones had McAfee pre-installed with a similar setup. If you do a factory reset and they find that it is a different phone number now, the phone locks down (You can enter a pin to unlock). You can't even access the bootloader or do another factory reset.

lenomad··on The McDonalds Monopoly Fraud (2014)
The gift was not by McDonald's but by the scammer!
lenomad··on Ask HN: Going to meet one of the world's top string theorist – what should I ask?
Just out of curiosity, what did you talk about? (assuming the lunch is already over)
lenomad··on Wanna quit your job and become upwork freelancer? Do not do that
It takes some effort to find jobs where clients are willing to pay a premium for quality.

I've used Upwork before - if you are experienced enough, you can easily filter the client by a combination of amount spent, average hourly rate paid, prior feedback by contractors, feedback given to contractors and their estimate price (or expertise) for the project. Apply/respond only if the client matches your filter.

But as others have mentioned here, it is cut-throat competition - you have to be patient and very choosy.

lenomad··on From Gongkai to Open Source (2014)
You shouldn't neglect everything that doesn't seem related. These can affect the overall climate for innovation, imo.

lenomad··on Meet Model X
Musk actually demoes it opening in a low-height garage. It has two hinges for the door that lets it open at less height.
lenomad··on Ask HN: What is the most interesting example of AI use on the web?
"The Grid[0] harnesses the power of artificial intelligence to take everything you throw at it - videos, images, text, urls and more - and automatically shape them into a custom website unique to you"

Seems like a good use of AI.

lenomad··on How Hacker News and FreshDesk led me to quit my job and launch my own startup
First of all, congratulations. Can you tell us more about why you chose Chennai? Does it have a good startup ecosystem?
lenomad··on Windows Drops Bing in China for Baidu
Not the OP, but I think he means that search should be decentralized with respect to regional differences, not computing. Eg, Baidu is better positioned to give more relevant results in China
lenomad··on Subscription iPhones
I don't think counterfeit iPhones run iOS; the people creating them wouldn't care enough to spoof the user agents.

The additional numbers would probably be because used phones are imported and sold there.

lenomad··on Anyone with a remote job making 80k a year?
Which is the company, if you don't mind?
lenomad··on My experiences of working remote for a year
This works, but can't beat talking in-person, at least in my case.

That said, I still don't consider going to a regular office. Should try a coworking space.

lenomad··on My experiences of working remote for a year
Nice article. As someone who has never worked at a normal office, I'm glad that you're finding remote work better.

I'm in my mid 20s, I do contract work and has several personal projects that I have high hopes for. But there are moments when I'm bored/stuck when I think having a coworker nearby whom you could instantly talk to would be better.
