lexicality··on The oldest ice disappears and the Stone Age emerges from it
I'm slightly surprised they're just holding these artefacts with bare hands. I thought that was generally a no-no for dealing with objects untouched for thousands of years
lexicality··on Why Micron Is Suddenly Ditching 4F² DRAM as Rivals Double Down
That roadmap image looks like mojibake.

I would say I'm excited to buy 6F²ζÅ DRAM but I assume it's going to be reserved for AI datacentres that don't exist.

on the darkweb you can pay people to break into wrongdoers houses and set their default browser to Edge. For extreme cases you can also have their TV connected to the internet and all EULAs accepted...

It's a big ask to expect people to do the thing they volunteered to do and can step back from doing any time they want?
lexicality··on Hackers activate automatic defrosting in supermarket fridges across Europe
It means the manufacturer has arbitrarily decided that you need to buy a new fridge because their bottom line is looking a bit ragged

my latest annoyance is the way they keep making the gift nitro button bigger and more likely to be where you tap when trying to send a message. I don't know what their PMs are smoking to think that gifting nitro is something people do so often that there needs to be a permanent flashing button on screen to do it.

Perl has been the sysadmin's friend (and enemy) for decades. You can run stuff with backticks and manipulate the results in relative safety.

Anyone successfully done that recently?

lexicality··on C's Flexible Integer Sizes Were Not a Design Mistake
fwiw depending on use cases you might actually want to be using the fast variants for storage too, for example on arm64 you'll get aligned memory loads
lexicality··on C's Flexible Integer Sizes Were Not a Design Mistake
I feel like the article glosses over the fact that (to my mind) `int_fast32_t` and `int_least32_t` are a much better solution than "int is a random size good luck"

If you code exclusively using those types (and the `*ptr_t` ones) then you precisely express to both the compiler and the next person reading it what is supposed to be in those variables.

I suspect vscode claims to xterm-256 and doesn't bother to identify itself in any other way
lexicality··on AWS says it can't restore some data from mideast facilities struck by Iran
They can recover most of it? I assumed that those AZs had been offline for so long because they were like gone gone.
lexicality··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
There are quite a lot of videos of people ignoring roundabouts, and some of them even land on their wheels and keep going afterwards

> The Empire State Building was famously built in a year. Nowadays the most utilitarian housing project takes longer.

This is true, but usually fewer people die in the construction of those utilitarian housing projects

lexicality··on I think I hate the internet
most actors have never even visited Thespia
lexicality··on “Tweet” and the bird logo apparently enter the public domain
It's stupid. Every normal (ie not terminally online) person I speak to calls it twitter and is confused if I call it X. For some reason most of them think an "x post" is on instagram too. I guess because influencers call crossposting that?

> Topping puts the tree on senescence pathway and gives the ecology time to transition from alive to dead and dying.

Is this why the council recently topped a tree on my road that's been breaking up the pavement? We thought they were cutting it down since they dug up all the tarmac around it, but they just knocked the top off, taking something like 98% of the leaves with it, and then put fresh tarmac over the exposed roots. We've been puzzling over that for a week...

Most of the UK is on it. Northern Ireland is missing for some reason.
lexicality··on Git hosting that never leaves Europe
How did you choose which countries to include on your map? You have countries that aren't in the EU but are missing countries which are.
lexicality··on Elevator of the Year: Modernization of the Metropolis Trust Building
I understand the machines were in the basement, I don't understand why the motor for 2 was under shaft 1, 3 under 2, and 1 under 3.
lexicality··on Can AI design circuit boards yet?
> I'm confused. Who made this benchmark and why?

It's a thinly veiled advert for Atopile. I don't know if it's a company behind it or just someone with a lot of money to spend on advertising since their about page (and docs) both 404, and the "packages" link sends you to a login screen that tries to unlock 1password. I guess claude can make circuit boards but not functioning websites?

lexicality··on Elevator of the Year Winner Modernization of the Metropolis Trust Building
I wish there was more explanation as to why the original builders decided to make a cat's cradle out of the roping. It's not like you can accidentally run the cables for cab #1 all the way over cabs 2 & 3 because you weren't paying attention during installation.

> Note how nobody ever got the idea to apply syntax highlighting to English or any other natural language

Yes they have? It's a fairly common method of teaching children sentence structure.

Pedagogy aside, take a look at what books looked like before the printing press.

> for experienced readers syntax parsing happens as automatically as it does in natural language without any need of colors.

If you're reading slowly, yes. The colours help you skim-read.

Why do you feel the need to intentionally hobble yourself? The human eyes can take in a spectacular amount of visual information at a glance, using colour, texture, shape and so on to instantly classify and identify things.

Decades of visual design research have proven that colours and shapes improve understanding and you're using a device capable of complex and rich information display, but you want it to look like a book because ..?

lexicality··on HTML over WebSockets: real-time SPAs with barely any JavaScript
I remember doing this with jQuery's $.ajax nearly 15 years ago. This seems comically overcomplicated in comparison. Why bother with the overhead of a websocket?

> You do not need to build an API: the server generates HTML and sends it to the client, with no middleman.

You're still building an API, it's just inside the websocket handler rather than http. Essentially this is yet another DIY RPC framework.

Why reinvent everything yet again? jQuery still exists. All the required methods still exist too. You can build a bog standard HTML website and then use progressive enhancement to fetch the next html page and replace the content of the current one with that, which has the benefit of handling middle click perfectly.

lexicality··on London Underground begins scanning passengers' faces
On the one hand, I hate the expansion of authoritarian power by the state.

On the other, I do think that we should put people in prison for posting on facebook. That way I won't have to keep seeing my crazy uncle at family gatherings!
