lfender6445··on Show HN: Random-name.com – A search tool to help you name your baby
Hi HN!

This tool was built with mongo and nextjs using data provided by https://catalog.data.gov/dataset/baby-names-from-social-secu...

My hope is that parents will find it useful and that the application could expand into different categories like server names, internet handles, fantasy names, etc.

lfender6445··on Show HN: Notably – a simple tool for sharing markdown notes
this is an absolutely beautiful markdown implementation.
lfender6445··on Why I’m Using a Flip Phone

'physical world around me has expanded'
care to elaborate?
lfender6445··on Jefferies gives IBM Watson a Wall Street reality check
i like how you made it more succinct by changing it to "Change needs feedback" but your drawn out explanation makes you sound like a person who doesn't know how to provide feedback
lfender6445··on A crashed advertisement reveals logs of a facial recognition system
just so im clear, this is someone in a pizza shop looking at a windows kiosk with a camera?

it would be interesting to see the ad and how / if it changes based on who is watching

lfender6445··on Show HN: Kobble – Notes app that saves directly to GitHub
i would love something like this for free bitbucket private repos, is there any planned support? realtime updates would also be great

lfender6445··on Cellphone Spy Tools Have Flooded Local Police Departments
Would wifi calling help in a situations like these?
lfender6445··on Misophonia: Scientists crack why eating sounds can make people angry
For myself I thought it bothered me because of how I was raised (not to chew with mouth open, smacking sounds, eat quietly, etc)
lfender6445··on Ask HN: Excluding WordPress, what is your favorite for blogs or small stores?
Ghost runs on express for those interested, so its very easy to extend if need be
lfender6445··on Can you hurt yourself eating chilli peppers?
some people go for the heat because of the endorphin rush associated with spicy peppers, see Capsaicin - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsaicin - which also has analgesic properties.

I've read somewhere that the body releases endorphins because you trick it into thinking its in pain (and for some it is painful) but if you enjoy eating spicy foods this might explain why you'd want to push the envelope.

No pain no gain :)

lfender6445··on To Catch a Mosquito
i hardly ever get bit but i know people who are bitten all the time. i'm sure there is something here, unless i am getting bitten and don't have a physical reaction.
lfender6445··on Google's CFO Ruth Porat is pushing “creatives” to bring costs under control
hilarious but true in many cases
lfender6445··on Google's CFO Ruth Porat is pushing “creatives” to bring costs under control
i'm with you, it takes someone to be at least a little bit crazy to do a job like this under those circumstances.

i always wonder how lonely these people are in their day to day lives, but maybe they derive satisfaction from their hectic work lives instead of human relationships.

i know i've been there before from my own hectic work schedules, caught up in the love affair of a high pressure work environment.

lfender6445··on The Long, Remarkable History of the GIF
the conversation with the imgur ceo was my favorite part of this piece. for those interested:

> GIFV is not actually a distinct file format, but it is an MP4 or WebM video that is presented via a HTML 5 video element or an Adobe Flash element with options set so as to make it work similarly to an animated GIF (i.e. endless loop with no video controls visible

lfender6445··on Otto joins Uber
is otto using LIDAR or camera tech to for vehicle automation?
lfender6445··on The Insect Portraits of Levon Biss
So the final image is composed of other images pieced together? This makes me feel like the final product is closer to an illusion than what the insect would look like at higher zoom levels. Regardless the outcome was stunning
lfender6445··on When Websites Won’t Take No for an Answer
godaddy is notorious for this when you are purchasing or renewing a domain
lfender6445··on Ephemeral is developing tattoo ink designed to disappear after a year
watching the video the pigs seem pretty comfy for the most part. i would have thought they'd be squealing and writhing
lfender6445··on The real reason Slack became a billion dollar company (2015)
the one thing that bothers me about slack is the notification model - i am always distracted and compelled to check notifications (whether they are relevant or not). as such i try to minimize the application and only respond when im called out by name and or channel or @here notifications are posted, but still there are also channel users who abuse these notification broadcasting features.
lfender6445··on SF tech bro: ‘I shouldn’t have to see the pain, struggle, despair of homeless’
its amazing to me that with all the money and talent in the bay area, that noone has made progressive efforts in solving some of the problems with homelessness and helping others get back on their feet.
lfender6445··on Ask HN: What's your #1 pain point when asking for a raise?
for me, its the realization that if i don't get what I want, i risk feeling disheartened about my job in the future - especially if its a job i enjoy.

there is a risk/reward benefit that one enters by asking for a raise, where if all things were to stay the same, I could walk away relatively unscathed.

this could change depending on whether or not you were asking for a raise because you feel you deserve it, financial necessity, or both.

lfender6445··on Ask HN: Are there real-world examples of moral failures of software engineers?
slightly related, but check out consequences of an insightful algorithm - which speaks to the unintentional ethical failures we make as technology continues to progress and become more powerful.

lfender6445··on Overcoming Intuition in Programming
some of the pitfalls to intuition echo the side effects of programming by coincidence, outlined in pragmatic programmer https://pragprog.com/the-pragmatic-programmer/extracts/coinc...

> Don’t code blindfolded. Attempting to build an application you don’t fully understand, or to use a technology you aren’t familiar with, is an invitation to be misled by coincidences.

lfender6445··on Ask HN: Negotiating a remote job offer?
I would always advise first checking any listed glassdoor salaries (if there are any) to ensure you are getting paid fairly for your position.

The trickiest component of remote work is communication. Ask other team members how they collaborate effectively and the tools used to do so.

Working from home is a perk in itself but its not for everyone. Sometimes I find myself going into the office just to get out of the house.

lfender6445··on Please Do Not Steal My Code, Mock My Analysis, and Present My Ideas as Your Own
I am with you. While attribution is nice, the time wasted on ranting and fuming over the lack of credit feels a little whiny.
