lifeofguenter··on PHP is Dead (and AI is to blame)

any numbers to back this up? Laravel is very popular in EU Africa and Asia as well.

> Horizontal scaling due to the nothing shared architecture

Virtually no language that can be used as web stack has any restriction on horizontal scaling? Can you name one example?

> But usually your performance problem is not the executing code but the database.

the endless performance benchmarks would beg to differ. Sure, _any_ IO can and will be the bottleneck, but unless your code base is just 100 loc, you will see other bottlenecks.

> FrankenPHP is this.

so why keep fastcgi? what is the advantage over http (transport, not talking about static assets)?

> Seems like your beef is not with php itself

I do not have any beef with PHP or ecosystem. The complete top-half of my blog post is actually giving kudos to what makes PHP great.

My main take is simply that advantages that PHP had previously are having less impact in todays world :)

PHP already “compiles” with opcache. But it only happens eventually once a path is requested. Having a cli to explicitly pre-generate all compiled versions while doing checks would increase the predictability of your code. Maybe even wrap it as .phar to analogue to .jar for a simple arg when running php-fpm.

hacklang is too different. But yah, thats exactly what Facebook had to do to improve PHP within their stack.

For us as well - especially for existing projects. For new projects we are failing to see the same advantages we saw just a year ago with PHP.

was this maybe an issue with the cd-writer? maybe at the speeds it was writing with?

Who is comparing LLM with Humans?

As far as I can tell nobody is.

LLM is a great tool that helps our brains same way a hammer helps our hands.

lifeofguenter··on Reclaiming IPv4 Class E's 240.0.0.0/4
You are right, approx 2B households alone exist.

Using SRV and increasing IP address space “by 64k” is only valuable for large single consumers such as AWS.

lifeofguenter··on Amber: Programming language compiled to Bash
Impressive project.

But I always feel that if you reach a certain complexity in your bash scripts, you should rather pivot to any other $lang.

Bash scripts should be simple glue between programs (unix-principle).

Comparing Graffiti with Bank robbery is crazy.

Its Art.

I would like to understand why people take offense in it - especially if done on places that are so non-important.

lifeofguenter··on Launch HN: Diversion (YC S22) – Cloud-Native Git Alternative
Have you ever tried running Git in the cloud? :)

Cloud-native and running things on “EC2” are very different things.

lifeofguenter··on Borgbase backups have been unavailable for 3 days
Hetzner Storage just lost a couple of snapshots a while ago…

If you want “perfect architecture” and reliability/availability you just need to pay for it (aws/s3). Or make use of multiple providers.

I used cloudflare-workers still this year and only switched a couple of months ago: https://securitytrails.com/domain/url.rw/history/a

The performance was still very bad from a 95 percentile perspective.

On AWS with Global Accelerator as well.

Yes, this is still true in 2021 (why I switched) and even true that you will not always receive the closest PoP even in bandwidth-cheap countries.

For example from Sweden I was usually routed via Denmark. I was Pro user, more PoPs are available to Business or Enterprise customers however.

Lambda@Edge unfortunately does not support provisioned concurrency, so you are bound to cold-starts as well (I tried, measured, and reverted before even going live with it).

Running something locally is not necessarily free either. Even if maybe the "host" is for free (which I can not imagine, unless someone throw something at you), it will still require your time to setup and ensure its running.

For private/small open source projects I would highly welcome such a pricing tier from travis-ci but 69USD is just not in my pocket (not saying its unjustified though!).

For larger open-source projects that rely on many builds throughout the day/month, this might be a bigger problem.

So while its "free" marketing, it might be much more crucial to our open-source structure than we think it is (which might be a problem as well).

And I think we can all agree: open source software is an important part not only for the industry but our lives :)
