linkingday··on Study of falling sperm counts finds 'alarming' levels of chemicals in male urine
think we should be focusing on the academic journal rather than the sketchy news site. this seems to be a legitimate study.
linkingday··on CNN cutting back on over-hyping everything as “breaking news”
or...from the perspective that much of Europe views it. American politics is bunk, bought and sold by corporations that think of nothing but profit, by design. literally a country where bribery is legal and encouraged
linkingday··on CNN cutting back on over-hyping everything as “breaking news”
what if I told you that Democrats aren't even on the left, when it comes to the rest of the world?
linkingday··on CNN cutting back on over-hyping everything as “breaking news”
seeing CNN and "progressive" in the same context befuddles me - these guys are center-right in almost every sense. I guess that's just where the Overton window is nowadays
linkingday··on In a small Virginia town, citizens review police like Uber drivers
no, a state where the police/government has a monopoly on violence is the dystopia. and we already live in it. giving citizens a way to speak up about potential abuses is in no way harmful
linkingday··on Show HN: Nextjournal – seamless data science for teams
I'm currently working on implementing this same sort of platform at an FI. Most of these vendors have the same exact product, give or take a few key features (like visual programming with Dataiku, cloud/on-prem hosting, etc.).

The biggest thing that I've seen that is missing from almost all of them is a robust data ingestion and transformation engine. THAT'S what I'm interested in seeing.

linkingday··on Bling Fire: Finite state machine and regular expression manipulation library
To further your point, NLTK is written in pure Python whereas the backend for spaCy, thinc, is written in C/C++/Python. Really no comparison here.
linkingday··on Apple’s $9 engineering marvel no one wants (2017)
Now I'm interested in what the Google version that comes with the Pixel 3/XL is like
linkingday··on Skymind (YC W16) raises $11.5M to bring deep learning to more enterprises
Looks like they used Cloudcraft for that
linkingday··on Google must be broken up due to its 'overwhelming' power, News Corp says
pot, kettle
linkingday··on Machine learning can boost the value of wind energy
What prediction algorithm are you using for this? Not sure if it's mentioned elsewhere on the site
linkingday··on This Cat Does Not Exist
Author may want to implement a labelling method for users for a days to maybe train the discriminator a little bit better. Would be a cool human-in-the-loop exercise.
linkingday··on Facing opposition, Amazon reconsiders NY headquarters site, two officials say
How exactly is Amazon's second HQ going to give the general populace of New York (wait, sorry, only those "work for a living") the opportunity of a lifetime?
linkingday··on Reddit is raising a huge round near a $3B valuation
To somewhat further your point, take a look at /r/greentext and /r/4chan. While the posts themselves are only somewhat racist, the comments that accompany them are disgustingly edgy and juvenile - they're not being downvoted however. I don't think anything is likely to be done to these subreddits.
linkingday··on Tyson chicken nuggets might contain rubber, USDA warns
OP mentions 'factory farms', which are where most of the affordable meat in the US (and probably the world as well) comes from. Most people can't afford to buy free-range chicken, and are left with stuff like factory-farmed producers like Tyson and Purdue.

Extreme conservative bias, nice source

linkingday··on Julia Language Co-Creators Win James H. Wilkinson Prize for Numerical Software
Can't wait for the language to be as widely used as Python or R. Been playing around with it at home since the 1.0 release and it really is a joy to use.
linkingday··on People Renting Out Their Facebook Accounts for Cash and Free Laptops
Doing exactly that is called 'concern-trolling'
linkingday··on FDA is considering drugs to help kids quit vaping
This is exactly how I quit vaping a few years ago. Crazy, right? Offer 0% nic Juul pods for parents to buy their kids and they'll stop giving a shit after a while.
linkingday··on How Cheap Labor Drives China’s A.I. Ambitions
But how does Captcha know that your answers are correct? There's likely already a predictive model that knows (within some confidence intervals) which ones are the 'correct' answers - someone had to label that data to begin with! Chicken, meet egg.
linkingday··on How Cheap Labor Drives China’s A.I. Ambitions
Amazon has a mechanical turking service for labelling data already - no need to actually put people on your payroll for doing this.
linkingday··on The greatest sales deck I've ever seen (2016)
Sure, but we can't call them PowerPoint presentations either.
