lippel82··on A new quantum algorithm for classical mechanics with an exponential speedup
The reason this worked is, that the back-action of the moon on the sun is very insignificant. For a "real" chaotic three-body system, you need three bodies that interact with each other on comparable scales.
lippel82··on Head-On Crash: 2009 Chevrolet Malibu vs. 1959 Bel Air (2009)
An emergency room physician once told me, they used to call the first sunny days of spring "Nierenwetter" ("kidney weather").
lippel82··on Game Boy Camera Canon EF Lens Mount (2018)
This is now my lock screen as well. Thank you very much!
lippel82··on Rare genital defects seen in sons of men taking major diabetes drug
From the artcile: "The numbers were small — 13 metformin-exposed boys were born with genital defects. But after the researchers adjusted for factors including parental ages and maternal smoking status, they found a 3.39-fold rise in the odds of a genital defect. “The rate per se was surprisingly high,” Wensink says."
lippel82··on US DOE to offer $6B to keep struggling nuclear reactors online
They're advocating for "drastically cutting the red tape", which could certainly influence one side of these inequalities quite strongly.
lippel82··on The Fireless Cooker That Feeds
Not all food is done once it reaches the desired temperature. A lot of food, e.g. tough meats, need to stay above a certain temperature for a long time until they're done.
lippel82··on $130B wiped off crypto markets in 24 hours
The supply of Dollars is not limited to 21 million.
lippel82··on Scientists create matter from pure light, proving the Breit-Wheeler effect
Real Estate! That'll be the only valuable thing in such an economy.
lippel82··on Sandwell Bitcoin mine found stealing electricity
No, if you need 50k for electricity, it does not matter how much money you put into the mining rig, you're better off buying 40k bitcoin directly.
lippel82··on Vertical turbines are more efficient in large-scale wind farms: study
Only the generator is at the bottom, the power still comes from the upper part of the structure and is transferred mechanically, I would assume.
lippel82··on How India went from a ray of hope to world record for most Covid cases in a day
But you can see that explosive growth equally well in the per capita numbers. The total number is just the per capita rate multiplied by a different number in every country, so there are very few occasions where it is useful to choose it over the per capita rate.
lippel82··on 2I/Borisov, the First Interstellar Comet to Have Visited Our Solar System
The headline seems to be plainly wrong. It's an interstellar comet that supposedly has not had a close encounter with another star. But it certainly is not the "first interstellar comet to have visited our solar system", or did I miss something?
lippel82··on Van Eck Phreaking
Cheap HDMI cables typically leak image information quite nicely. With the right equipment, it's really easy to get a decent resolution image of the radiation picked up from an HDMI cable even over tens of meters.
lippel82··on Möbius Printing Helper
From your comment I would conclude that is not exactly the same mechanism. For the moebius printing, the pages are flipped individually while the stack of records is flipped as a whole.
lippel82··on Tether price manipulation
It does make sense. The price of BTC in USD is roughly the same on every exchange. If some exchanges allow USD and USDT interchangeably, the BTC price can be driven up by trades that are conducted in USDT. The price on Coinbase will adapt to that.
lippel82··on How I Met My Wife (1994)
Nice, we have Jein in German, which is a Portmanteau of Ja and Nein (yes and no).
lippel82··on Colombia is considering legalizing its cocaine industry
They provided the nuance actually in the same sentence, right were you cut off your quote: (it's "illegal but tolerated")
lippel82··on Moderna Covid vaccine candidate almost 95% effective, trials show
I am assuming they are also responsible for the clinical trials, but I'm not sure about that. It would make sense, though, because navigating the approval processes of the different agencies requires very specialized experience and domain knowledge.
lippel82··on Radiatori – pasta shaped like a radiator to maximize heat exchange
Trapping sauce, ok. But heat exchange? Why would you need optimal heat exchange? And why should a complex shape such as this have better heat exchange than an "unrolled" plane like, e.g. Tagliatelle?
lippel82··on 'Near extinction' of influenza in NZ as numbers drop due to lockdown
It did not come directly from bats to humans, there was another intermediate host species. We don't know which, pangolins possibly, or minks or some other species, probably in closer contact to humans than bats.
lippel82··on The Final Airbus A380 Has Been Assembled
Was it the curvature of the coordinate system you were using during machine install, or was it the actual curvature of earth's surface that was important here?
lippel82··on World's richest 1% cause double CO2 emissions of poorest 50%, says Oxfam
That's a bullshit measure! What number of people make more than an arbitrary threshold value does not say anything. Maybe all these people made $90,000 seven years ago, and $100,000 is just the new $90,000 in 2017. It's a large organization, I'm surprised they had only 11 people above $100,000 in 2017.
lippel82··on Germany will violate international agreements with Unitary Patent, says FFII
Her son worked in the silicon valley office in a very junior position at the time. That's very far removed from the German public sector consulting. And where did you get that bit about commissions? I'm pretty sure that McKinsey doesn't pay any commissions whatsoever to junior consultants.
lippel82··on Germany will violate international agreements with Unitary Patent, says FFII
To be fair, her son worked in the silicon valley office in a very junior position at the time. That's very far removed from the German public sector consulting. She has seven well educated children, they have to work somewhere...
lippel82··on Germany will violate international agreements with Unitary Patent, says FFII
What did her son have to do with anything? And quite frankly, even though the optics were probably not very good, I don't know of any corruption on the part of Ursula von der Leyen that was conclusively shown.
lippel82··on Tech firms face growing resentment of parent employees during Covid-19
Well, I find it hard to believe that €200 - €300 should be "full". That can most certainly not cover the full cost for child care, so there's probably still a significant subsidy by the state even for high earners.
lippel82··on Tom Lehrer's Mathematical Songs (1951)
Why does it say (1951) in the title? The article says "Last Updated October 2013" and talks about songs that were published in the seventies.
lippel82··on A new design ship in the Philippines is partly powered by wave energy
300kw/h is a nonsensical unit in this case. kw*h would be energy, but kw alone would be the proper unit to compare to the 3000hp drive shaft.
lippel82··on US economy suffers worst quarter since WWII as GDP shrinks 32.9%
From an economists point of view, the thing to compare to would be cost per prevented death. I don't have a current estimate for that, but it is presumably much lower.
lippel82··on US economy suffers worst quarter since WWII as GDP shrinks 32.9%
No, wait, compared quarter to quarter it really did decrease by 32.9%. The 9.5% is what would be missing if suddenly everything went back to normal. Which it won't.
