listless··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
I am fully remote yes.

I am admittedly in a bit of a doom loop. I wake up, isolate in my office and then I want to just isolate all the time. This room makes me miserable and is also the only place I feel comfortable.

I try to exercise every day. I invest in spirituality and faith every day. I try to meditate and read and stay off my phone. Most days I don't do a very good job of any of it.

I am remote. And thank you so much for this tip. I'm willing to try anything. I will check it out.

I am in my late 40's and I am struggling more than I ever have in my entire life. I have a great marriage and 3 children and I have a good job with good income. I have nothing to be unhappy about.

And yet my children are grown now and mostly gone. I feel a profound sense of loss.

I feel like I'm entering the age where I'm a prime candidate for any myriad of diseases and I get so anxious every time I get a symptom. I go to the Dr. a lot. I went to the ER twice every year in the past 3 years. Ironically, its occurred to me that if I do have something terminal, I don't have to go on like this. And I like the thought of that. I'm both terrified of death and also really looking forward to it.

I used to enjoy my work, but AI has made it so that I just kind of show up and ask it for things. Anyone could do what I do. There's no sense of accomplishment in anything.

The worst thing about this is that I have every reason to be the happiest person here. So the fact that I feel the way that I do actually makes me a pretty bad person and that makes the whole thing feel a whole lot worse.

listless··on Anne Carson wins Nobel Prize in literature 2026
I should clarify that I personally would not write this off. But I understand the thinking a lot of people are using when they do.
listless··on Anne Carson wins Nobel Prize in literature 2026
Unfortunately activists have done a fantastic job turning gay into a broad political issue encompassing a lot of ideologies that many people find off-putting. So when you see a plot like this, your first thought is that 1) the author has a self righteous agenda and 2) the award is not deserved but rather given to signal sides in a culture war.

Neither of those things may be true. And that’s tragic because a lot of great work is going to be written off under these pretenses.

listless··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
I don’t actually know. But it’s logical to me that a system designed to find answers in context is well suited for these healthcare problems. We know the answer is somewhere in all the data we have. It’s just too difficult and complex for us to get through quickly.
listless··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
I would say I’m willing to accept the risk. But I do believe the risk is overblown. It’s always overblown.

I'm beyond thankful that Chinese AI models are so good. I desperately want us to cure the myriad of maladies that humans suffer needlessly with on a daily basis. We're going to need more powerful models than we have now if we're gonna do that and the Chinese are providing the competition needed to push this thing as fast as we can.

I realize "going as fast as we can" is not the most popular position atm. But I'm far more interested in what good we can do than 10% apocalypse scenarios. I volunteer with a charity for childhood brain cancer and I do not want to see another 4 year old die. I'm willing to risk anything to stop this.

listless··on The internet discovers TLA+. Now what?
I can’t understand any of this. It’s saying everything and nothing at the same time. Whatever TLA+ is this article makes it sound like the most tedious and academic thing ever.
listless··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
This makes sense from a business perspective. If your primary customers are men, you wanna branch out of that real quick. I think something like ~80% of all consumer spending in the US is done by women. You gotta go after that. That's an ENORMOUS market to just leave on the table.

That said, I fail to see how trying to attract more women alienated men. I just don't buy that culture war as a reason. I remember Nike doing some things that were a bit annoying that I wished they would just stay out of, but I still bought their shoes. The only thing more insufferable than the culture war is taking part in said culture war.

listless··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
I don’t agree. Building a date picker used to be next to impossible. Overnight it was trivial. That’s some serious disruption.
listless··on More than 10 firms pay up to $100k a month for access to Truth Social posts
> Thieves, grifters, rapists, pedos, just the absolute worst human garbage imaginable.

I would urge you strongly not to let yourself be this consumed by this kind of thinking. This is a distorted view of your fellow man - however accurate _some_ of it may be about _some_ people - regardless of their political affiliation. This kind of thinking is exactly how we got to where we are now and persisting in it will almost certainly get us more extreme reactions.

that said, the Republican establishment has proven itself unworthy of the office and should be shown the door in the next election cycle - in decimating fashion. So much so that it should cause a complete recalibration of that party.

This is so good Ty.

Basically, looking at inflation over time, we look pretty good here.

listless··on MCP is dead?
Oh man - hearing that we’re building MCP’s where there is no CLI makes me super nervous.

It’s one thing to dupe the functionality of your CLI for better agent integration. It’s another to make it the sole method of interface locking everyone into a spec that we may decide we can do better at some point. Then we gotta pay off all the MCP debt and it will be cheaper to just not.

listless··on I think Anthropic and OpenAI have found product-market fit
I would agree here. And in my experience Qwen 27B and Deepseek v4 are also extremely good.

None of them are quite opus, but they are damned close and a no brainer if you care at all about cost.

listless··on Spirit Airlines canceled all flights and is going out of business
This is the result of Elizabeth Warren blocking the merger with JetBlue.

I’m not saying it wasn’t the right thing to do. I don’t know. But this is definitely on her either way.

listless··on Ghostty is leaving GitHub
I felt pangs of emotion reading the post so it’s definitely not just you.

I think because GitHub has been such an important part of my life dating back to the very start of my career - just like you.

And it’s not just the technology, it’s the people. All the great projects there. The countless README’s I’ve dissected trying to setup something new. There’s people behind all of that and that always felt exceptionally meaningful to me.

It has been profoundly emotional to watch GitHub degrade over the past year. It’s almost like watching someone you love slip away. Which I have also done. It’s not the same, but there is something familiar in the pain.

Meanwhile streamers dunk on it in YouTube videos and on X and none of it is funny to me. It’s just tragic.

Now I’m choked up. Dammit all to hell.

listless··on Ubuntu now requires more RAM than Windows 11
I agree. And even on Ubuntu, the performance vs same specs on Windows is ridiculously better.

Apps are still a huge gap on Linux, but as an OS, I choose it every time over Windows and MacOS.

Would it kill this guy to make his site responsive? It’s like one prompt.
listless··on We do not think Anthropic should be designated as a supply chain risk
This is exactly right. It’s crazy to me how easily people get confused and think that corporations are “good” or “evil”.

Anthropic is incredibly good at marketing. They are constantly out talking about how dangerous AI is an even showing how Claude does dangerous thing in their own testing. This is intentional - so that you see them as having the truly powerful AI. in fact it’s so powerful, all they can do is warn you about it.

They knew refusing this contract would make them look like the good guy. Again. They knew OpenAI would sign it. They knew vapid celebrities would celebrate them.

Folks come on. Don’t be so easily taken in. None of these people are good guys. They are all just here to make money and accumulate power and standing. That’s ok. There’s nothing wrong with that. But we gotta stop acting like we’re in some ongoing battle of good vs evil and tech companies are somehow virtuous.

listless··on OpenClaw is changing my life
What I don’t understand in these posts is how exactly is the AI checking its work. That’s literally what I’m here for now. It doesn’t know how to log in to my iOS app using the simulator, or navigate to the firebase console and download a plist file.

Once we get to a spot where the AI can check its work and iterate, the loop is closed. But we are a long way off from that atm. Even for the web. I mean, have you tried the Playwright MCP server? Aside from being the slowest tool calls I have ever seen, the agent struggles mightily to figure out the simplest of navigation and interaction.

Yes yes Unit tests, but functional is the be all end all and until it can iterate and create its own functional test suite, I just don’t get it.

What am I missing?

Same. Cases are like putting shoes on a dog. You can do that, but it looks dumb and the dog will probably be fine without them.
listless··on Women dating safety app 'Tea' breached, users' IDs posted to 4chan
This looks like a slam book. Or that’s what girls called it when I was in high school. Basically just a place where you write mean things about people you don’t like. And those people don’t get to see it.
listless··on How much do you think it costs to make a pair of Nike shoes in Asia?
“I encourage you to not assume that every Asian worker is a slave."

That’s a hell of a dodge. The problem isn’t that these workers are mistreated, it’s that you’re a racist.

listless··on Bored of It
I do think this is true. I'm 46 and I find myself wondering when things are going to "return to normal". But I can't really define what that is besides saying "2019". I'm not even sure what I'm referring to other than I hate short form video. I don't know how I feel about AI. It does seem like something that has a lot of promise though if we can figure out the context issues.
listless··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
Your point is well made. If someone shoots you in a trailer park or the hood, nobody is launching a nationwide manhunt.

I redact my previous comment but leave it for posterity.

listless··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
That’s what happens when you commit a crime. It doesn’t matter who you kill or who you are when you do it. If the CEO had killed this guy in the same manner, he’d be facing the same consequences.
