litepost··on Xobni's Facebook app replaces Facebook messaging with email
Wow! We're about to launch our Facebook app as well... http://www.litepost.com http://mail.litepost.com
litepost··on The Dilbert Blog: The Secret - Is success socially contagious?
What an excellent little fucking article.
litepost··on Web2.0 described in two sentences
My guess is that, eventually, super-rich startup founders will evolve an equally advanced model for public philanthropy:

PHILANTHROPY 2.0

It's an idea whose time has come.

litepost··on Web2.0 described in two sentences
Usually on the web people prefer to give away their PRIVACY for free services. That privacy is in turn converted into advertising.

(This will all change very soon, when people are ready to start paying for a higher - and much more private and secure - level of premium service. You know, the Web will evolve to resemble the "regular' economy more and more, I believe..)

litepost··on Web2.0 described in two sentences
I still say Web 3.0 is when users are directly involved in the creation of web apps. That and increasingly intuitive 3d interfaces.

(Usability will also 'come into its own,' and find itself as an art and science, I believe.)

litepost··on Why not beat Google?
We're going more 'side-to-side' with our new product:

http://www.litepost.com

(We're hoping to introduce new ideas and more usable presentation methods, without necessarily duplicating sheer technical superiority..that can always come later.)

Anyhow, I'd say you're not nuts. Google's products all suffer from numerous defects, not the least of which is usability (in many cases).

litepost··on Max Levchin: "The last time I got kids to drop out of college, they all bought houses for cash."
I like his Slide Facebook apps, but some of them need usability help (as do most Facebook apps I've found) - as is being discussed in this current thread also: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31810
litepost··on Anyone interested in giving each other facebook app usability tips as the facebook apps are developed?
Definitely. I love Slide's My Questions app but its usability is horrid,,, Max... are you around? Love your app but I got a few ideas to make it a helluva lot more usable. Start by returning me to the question I've just answered instead of my own question page. (I'm familiar enough with my question, I don't need to return to it.) etc etc (And Slide's Facebook apps are hardly the worst offenders here. ALL of them could use a little bit of improvement IMHO.)

Web 3.0 = where _everyone_ contributes to the development of web apps, not _just_ engineers.

litepost··on We want a sub-YCNews
actually...

Edinburgh International Film Festival Day 7 Elijah Wood has very blue eyes and is trying to start up his own record label, good news for Scotland as he's a fan of local heroes Franz Ferdinand and Sons ... www.iofilm.co.uk/festivals/edinburgh/2005/diary_24082005.php -

litepost··on I don't know like you, but I'm slightly tired of this site ... it's time to take holiday ... week or two.
Try 3 weeks off the Internet. It rocks.
litepost··on I don't know like you, but I'm slightly tired of this site ... it's time to take holiday ... week or two.
I didn't take my laptop with me to this year's SXSW interactive (http://2007.sxsw.com/interactive/) and I think it greatly enhanced my experience.

Ironically, I think that tech conferences such as this would actually be enhanced--for (almost) everybody--if computers were generally prohibited at computer event venues. (Flame me not.) :)

If nothing else, it would increase f2f interaction..would it not??

(Wouldn't this be a rather stunning exercise/experiment...if only for a day or 2 at a major conference?!)

litepost··on Web App Autopsy
This was one of (at least!) 2 good talks on web apps at SXSW, both of which have online sources I've put previously on ycnews:

- http://www.carsonified.com/sxsw.pdf - http://particletree.com/sxsw/autopsy.zip

litepost··on How did you guys name your startup?
"It came to me in a dream."

But seriously...it did come to me while I was sleeping:

The subconscious mind is phenomenally powerful. It is best harnessed, for some people, through meditation or sleep.

Frankly, I was amazed the URL(s) were still available.

(Truncated spelling of core concepts is all.)

litepost··on [dead]
Hi- What page, Paul?

We shouldn't have to Google for this page?:

"feature requests" site:news.ycombinator.com yields: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=363

PS. Feature request: "search"? :) It seems a few people agree: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=363

litepost··on Any recommendations on convincing wives to let their husbands become entrepreneurs?
"Let"? As in .. you have to ask?

Be "the man." Take "the risk." She will follow you. (Otherwise, dump her.)

Also, read "The Way of the Superior Man" (and/or other books) by David Deida. It will be one of the better investments you will make in your life.

PS. There's a reason San Francisco's dead-last in (_heterosexual_) sex, young children and babies per capita: (Hint: can be elucidated from the following article) http://digg.com/offbeat_news/No_Sex_Tonight_2

litepost··on Any past Y Combinator foreign applicants got into the program but can't get a US visa?
LOL. Is it that difficult to marry an American nowadays, that you need to give up 1/2 your equity?

This is just one of any millions of potential solutions...

litepost··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
What's interesting is that I can only delete this, most recent comment/post. (Older threads and comments I have made I am no longer able to delete.) This is an FYI.

I wonder what the exact time-window is, because I am also unable to delete previous posts (since pg made this mini-announcement).

I wonder when/if it's going to be possible to delete your YC account (and all related information).

Digg promised this feature at "The Future of Web Apps" but it has yet to materialize (on Digg), I believe.

Does anyone know what the situation at reddit is wrt control of "your own personal information"? :)

I really am curious as to when the Web will evolve policies and products that adequately address this concern/"feature request."

litepost··on How necessary is it to have a lawyer incorporate you?
Ditto. I misspoke. ("contributing motivator" would be more accurate than "_the_ main reason.")

Having legal counsel in the know is certainly just one of many pieces, it all depends on which ones you need (most). (And that in turns depends on what precisely you're going after.)

litepost··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
Showdead (and related "new deletion feature") clarification from pg fyi:

Most relevant excerpt (MRE): "You can still see dead stuff if you set showdead to yes."

The rest of the comment for context: Your comment is still alive

http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27969

even though the post you commented on was deleted.

I just added deletion. When something is deleted, it really goes away. This is different from marking something as dead. You can still see dead stuff if you set showdead to yes.

Deletion is for submitters who change their mind; marking stuff as dead is for editors to do to spams and offtopic submissions.

litepost··on Paul Buchheit:"Don't Be Evil"
Is there a way to measure (via Google or some other publicly accesible technology) how close two terms are related, in the public discourse and on the Internet? (I'm sure there's some stupid easy way to do this, but I forget what the best way is.)
litepost··on What is your recommended beginner's hacker training course?
"Oh and don't tell the YC guys that you are hardly a hacker. They wont like that."

The definition of "hacker" is somewhat arbitrary but is nonetheless given inflated status by the majority of this community, it seems.

(I could be mistaken, of course.)

"The way of the future...":

http://gigaom.com/2007/04/10/web-20-death-of-the-network-engineer/

litepost··on Recommended hacker skills courses for non-tech founders
There's always Academy X in San Francisco, and related courses/institutions around the world (especially the US):

http://www.academyx.com/training/san_francisco/programs/web-developer/

LAMP in 3 months for $2000. (Sounds about right to me?)

@Zak & @pg: "For a non-hacker to judge the skill of a hacker is nearly impossible - it's hard enough for hackers to do it. PG discusses it at length: http://paulgraham.com/gh.html"

This isn't necessarily/always true. A person can always be judged by their prior work, as in any other field. The actual quality of the "hacking" may be difficult to discern, but the overall quality of the product/s should typically be visible rather easily/immediately.

If someone's built a product that works and/or sells reasonably, that's usually a good sign!!

litepost··on Any past Y Combinator foreign applicants got into the program but can't get a US visa?
Just marry an American. It's really that simple. :)

In all seriousness, if you _do_ marry an American, it is very likely that the US government/immigration service (now dba Dept. of Homeland Security) will forgive any extended but unauthorized stay in the US, AND give you a EAC (employment authorization card), followed immediately by a (SSN and) Green Card.

If you don't want to marry an American, you need to typically have some serious a) connections, b) money, c) credentials, and/or d) accomplishments under your belt.

In lieu of those, you need an attractive American employer who has one or more of the above-noted qualities. ;)

Please correct me if I am mistaken in any of these assertions...

litepost··on How necessary is it to have a lawyer incorporate you?
This is the main reason I wanted to join YC, to limit lawyer expenses.
litepost··on Competing with Adsense/Adwords
This is fing brilliant. This is what Wikia Search should do.
litepost··on What is Twitter's source of income??
since when do 'honorable' and 'stupid' mean the same thing?
litepost··on Paul Buchheit:"Don't Be Evil"
ie because of this phrase, Google has become associated with (the word) "Evil" in a way few others throughout history have (ie with the possible exception of Hitler et al)
litepost··on Paul Buchheit:"Don't Be Evil"
What about the whole NLP thing that NEGATIVE injunctions are ignored by the unconscious/subconscious brain.

In other words, this directive really serves to state "Be Evil" at the deepest level of our core consciousness?

litepost··on Is anyone working on something that is not a website?
I'm making computers and software for babies.
