ljsocal··on The Jobs Apocalypse Is Postponed. An AI Jobs Boom Is Here
A possible knock-on enabler effect might also boost demand for all kinds in f produces and services. For years, I’ve procrastinated about getting an updated Will, power of attorney, etc. ChatGPT has made the process easy to organize and to take the steps needed to engage an attorney and get it done.
ljsocal··on Ask HN: 30, burnt out, with 6-10 months of runway. What would you do?
consider a Peace Corps assignment. Besides the standard 27 month option, there are shorter term options in host countries and there are virtual volunteer positions where you serve from wherever you are. www.PeaceCorps.gov
ljsocal··on Apple 'Hide My Email' vulnerability reveals peoples' real email addresses
I submitted your post to Apple’s feedback for on iCloud. If others do the same, perhaps they’ll take notice:

ljsocal··on Giant Banana Pulled Over: Driver Says Cops Have Stopped Him 100s of Times
There are many of these “art cars” out there. See https://lesblank.com/films/automorphosis-by-harrod-blank/
ljsocal··on Travel locally, where you are
“because we found it randomly” reveals the importance of mindset. So much of the travel experience (hell, life itself!) is influenced by a positive attitude and openness to really see what is around us.
ljsocal··on Personal Encyclopedias
Fascinating idea! So wish I had parents and grands around so I could record all the old family stories that were told over the years. If you readers take no other action after reading this post, start recording your own oral history/stories; yours, parents, kids, friends, etc.
ljsocal··on Peace Corps 2.0: Now with Extra AI
The new Tech Corps invites engineers, data scientists, and technically minded builders to serve alongside partner countries working to responsibly adopt and deploy AI tools. Think less “teach Scratch in a classroom,” more “help ministries, universities, and startups translate AI potential into practical systems.” If you’ve ever wanted to ship something that matters outside the App Store, this is a chance to put your stack to work in the real world.
ljsocal··on Traintrackr – Live LED Maps
Build a BART- CalTrain version and make bank!!
ljsocal··on The Coffee Warehouse
Interesting analysis. If you’re into efficient operations, consider making coffee at home/office and either make your own banana bread (easy and far tastier!) or skip it!
ljsocal··on Pixar: The Early Days A never-before-seen 1996 interview
In 1999, Jobs received an award from the Silicon Valley Alum of Harvard Business School for his Pixar work. In his thank you remarks, he said he had no illusions about there being many people who’d be booting up their Power Mac G4 in 50 years but he was dead certain that millions would still be watching Toy Story. Twenty five years in, his prediction holds.
ljsocal··on I'm 74, spent 18mo coding an on-device AI platform to fix the GTM model
Sounds intriguing.
ljsocal··on Lotus Organiser
I was a Lotus Agenda heavy user and remember when app this came out. It is very similar to the beta of what was internally called “Hobbs” (yes that Hobbs) that I test-drove at their Boston HQ. I stuck with Agenda.
ljsocal··on Ask HN: What books are you reading now?
“The Forest Unseen” by David George Haskell. If you’re not already blown away by nature’s creativity and complexity, you will be if you read this.
ljsocal··on How Kyoto, Japan Became the Loveliest Tourist-Trap
Much of this article describes the behavior of relatively new travelers. As they mature, they’ll dig deeper, stay off the beaten tracks and, with luck, open up their cultural lens.
ljsocal··on Do You Need to Own a House? Many Older Americans Decide They Don't
There are some good rent vs own calculators out there. One thing that each person has to weigh is how much they value their time. Owning a home requires a certain amount of time that renters don’t commit. Not counting the considerable time in seeking out and buying a home or the preparation and process of selling a home, there’s an enormous amount time spent on maintenance, repair, renovation, etc. I’ve owned and rented and, for me, renting is a far superior lifestyle.
ljsocal··on Buying a Home Is Probably Even Worse Than NYTimes/NerdWallet Calculators Imply
I have both owned and rented. Having done this buy vs rent calculation many times and renting generally wins. Three factors not usually considered in the buy equation: 1) the house you’re willing to rent is less expensive than the one your willing to buy. 2) the value of the time you spend maintaining a home should be included in your return calculation 3) putting a lot of $ in any one investment asset (i.e. a single family residence) is riskier than a diversified portfolio of assets.
ljsocal··on Show HN: San Francisco Events Map
Love the idea, would be great if I could automatically filter to just the events that are in my personal interest set
ljsocal··on Show HN: I'm an airline pilot – I built interactive graphs/globes of my flights
here's what the last three months of retirement travel look like: https://share.icloud.com/photos/0bfsKT8PAv_CxDl4pVRWe9-iQ

Among many cool experiences was taking "Le Shuttle" under the English Channel - it's perhaps the most impressive piece of civil engineering I've seen.

ljsocal··on Show HN: I'm an airline pilot – I built interactive graphs/globes of my flights
Anim8's business model lets you buy credits that you can then use over whatever time works for you. Essentially a use fee rather than a pay regardless of use.
ljsocal··on Touching the back wall of the Apple store
Having worked in said fruit stand for several years, I can assure you that you were neither undetected nor unplayed. We kept score, too!
ljsocal··on Show HN: I'm an airline pilot – I built interactive graphs/globes of my flights
Impressive and very cool! You might consider making this into a globe route generator that folks will pay for. See https://anim8map.com/

As an active airline passenger for the past 50 years, I wish I’d kept a log my many hundreds of flights. Some day I’ll sit down and attempt an educated guess.

ljsocal··on Ask HN: What cool skill or project interests you, but feels out of reach?
A useful tool for me would be an app/site that instantly provides a short list of available events/activities that a) are happening soon, b) match/complement my unique set of interests and c) is in reasonable geographic proximity.
ljsocal··on Ask HN: Moving to London from California
Take a day-long walking tour with Fabian. He’s a German expat who is a city plannner in london. Besides being a super-nice guy, his tour offers a view of some of london’s most interesting neighborhoods. Not a tourist’s view. Buy him a beer and tell him Cal sent you. https://www.airbnb.com/slink/IH7SGUyq
ljsocal··on Schools reviving shop class
I was very fortunate to be in middle school (ages 11 - 13) in the late 60s when shop classes were still going strong. Here's what I recall of our curriculum:

6th grade: industrial drawing, hand tools, shop safety, home maintenance: replacing windows, wiring bulbs, switches and outlets, faucet installations. Basic fabrication with plastic, hammered metal forming and band sawing wood.

7th & 8th grade: Metal: forge, lathe, welding (electric arc & acetylene), sheet metal (cutting, bending, punching, riveting, soldering) Wood: turning on lathe, table sawing, planing, routing, laminating, veneering, clamping, etc

In high school, all of the above plus architectural drawing, project management, metal machining, and fiberglass (mold design, making and part-making). Student projects included dune buggy car bodies, boats, water skis, furniture and all the usual (cutting boards, knife blocks, spice racks, etc.)

In today's world, parents (and lawyers) might find it unsafe for boys (very few girls elected to take these classes) but in seven years of shop, I only recall one serious accident involving the loss of a finger tip.

I went on to college major in Industrial Design and business then spent a career designing and producing projects for major consumer product company clients.

ljsocal··on Ask HN: What's Your Experience with eSIMs?
I’ve had all good experiences with eSIMs. For service outside the U.S., HolaFly works well, is reasonably priced and is easily accessed for support, if required.
ljsocal··on Draw an iceberg and see how it will float
It would be interesting to create a version of this that would show how different displacement hull shapes would float.
ljsocal··on Agenda: a personal information manager (1990) [pdf]
I was an early and long-time Lotus user. It was the first app that made me feel like these personal computers really can make a dramatic productivity boost. I had enough interaction with the team at Lotus in Boston that they gave me a peek at screenshots of the Windows version. (Code-named “Hobbs” as in Calvin and.). There never was a good replacement for Lotus so it was painful when I had to accomplish the same work working across multiple apps.
ljsocal··on How to make the most of Apple Notes
Thanks for the good tips!

Until Safari adds a shared reading list feature, Notes collaboration works well for that purpose. Rather than emailing web links to a friend/colleague, just create a shared note for them and add the link to their reading list note. They remove links as they read/pass.
