lofties··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
Binance literally tweeted this themselves [1]. So either Binance is lying, in which case they cannot be trusted. Or their security practices allow developers unprecedented access to wallets, in which case they also cannot be trusted.

lofties··on Proton goes all in on using AI
The issue is that, per the article, "Andy Yen, the CEO of Proton, had a message for an employee in the company’s security Slack channel who urged the company to at least take a few days to pentest newly written code before pushing it live. “That’s bullshit and loser thinking. Of course it’s possible to be fast and secure,”

I think anyone who has been working around in IT long enough, knows that it is in fact very, very hard to be fast and secure. Even with AI.

lofties··on Redesigning source control at Anthropic
I think we can take this further, let's just end the human race as we know since we've obviously just successfully completed our technology tree. There is nothing left for us to do anymore! It was fun guys. Well, it really wasn't. But we made a lot of money! OK, maybe not everyone. But some people did! And that's all that matters. Top of the leaderboard!
lofties··on I hired an illustrator to draw my house. Now it's my Home Assistant dashboard
Sad, but at the same time it's worth asking how many people would actually pay an artist to do this, versus those who would never do this unless it was for AI.
lofties··on Decisions API is in public beta
Can't wait to read about BERT on the front-page!
lofties··on How to scale intent, quality, and artistry with AI [video]
That's quite bleak, and I hold an opposing view. My main view is people are generally quite good to discern AI cruft from "human-made" paintings, games, and music. As soon as it will be impossible to make money from AI cruft, the AI cruft will disappear. As a (hobby) game developer myself, no AI tool I have used has ever made me feel "wow, this is great". It has always required multiple iterations of feedback. I tried tools like Meshy too. I ended up hiring a part-time 3D designer from Indonesia, who is a joy to work with.
lofties··on Show HN: Pi pod – Run your pi coding agent in sandboxes on your own server
Super cool! I have a similar system that incorporates Forgejo and Pi into a system that functions a little bit more like a software team: https://bakedpi.dev

It's definitely more manual than some other solutions, but I prefer to know what my agents want to do before they do it.

It's not exactly isolated in their own VMs though. It's using Docker which isn't the safest solution out there but also... well, it is what it is.

lofties··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
I don't want my Claude to sound "natural". Claude is a robot and it should do behave like a robot. It should do what it's told. Nothing more and nothing less.
lofties··on Show HN: Huzzah – a novel approach to coding with AI
I could do this before too. The way I work is that I just write some functions, fully annotated, in whatever language the project is in, with a comment on what I expect the code to do, and an empty return. Then get an LLM to fill in the functions.

Helps me think about the problem, like your post mentioned, but I don't have to pay a tax on converting a prototyping language to a different language.

lofties··on There's no such thing as a small software team anymore
My biggest issue with these type of posts is that they never answer the "why". Hell, they don't even ask the "why".

> The more modular your code, the more agents you can run

OK, but why would I want to run more agents? So I can be more productive? What does this productivity lead to? And are we actually being more productive? Take a look at Bun's repo on GitHub which seems to be fully automated. Well over 5000 PRs open.

What's the use? How can we justify these 5000 PRs? Over the past years, software has become considerably more shit. Are these 5000 PRs improving the quality of software?

Is the end-user reaping the rewards? Are they getting better software, cheaper?

The answer to all of those is going to be "no".

And let's take Uber for example. They have many teams, and many more times the services. Has ride hailing become cheaper? No. Has it become more efficient? No.

Nothing is getting better, but at least we're all off worse!

lofties··on The 37signals Manager Playbook
For me personally, the goal of a take-home was always to see how the candidate walks through code, discusses code, and how well they take feedback.

This is why I'd ask candidates for previously written code they were proud of, rather than telling them to code something trivial.

Civil disobedience? In this economy?

lofties··on Chatto is now open source
Wow, it's using NATS! I used NATS extensively 10+ years ago, and I'm happy to hear it's still around. Our infrastructure had hiccups across our fleet of machines, but one part that always remained up and running without complaining on some dinky machine was NATS. Well, that and Redis. No complaints ever.

lofties··on Wayland set the Linux Desktop back by 10 years?
You could make this same post and replace any component with Wayland. At the end of the day the Linux community will continuously set the Linux Desktop back by N years. The most obvious case of this is Linus Tech Tips trying Linux to replace Windows for gaming, getting lost in what distro to pick, and then being flamed online for choosing the "wrong" distro. It's impossible for anyone without the time and curiosity to choose a Linux distro, and then to stick with it. My only "hope" for the year of The Linux Desktop is SteamOS, since that will have a commercial force driving adoption and removing the need for consumers to make a choice entirely.

lofties··on Claude Code Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Agent
I've been struggling quite a bit the past year or two, coming to terms with a new reality that vibe coding is here to stay. After some introspection, I feel like the problem is tied to losing my identity more than anything else, and that it doesn't have to be that way. Anyway, I wrote about it here. I hope someone who struggles with the same issue finds this helpful.
lofties··on Show HN: Quantifying opportunity cost with a deliberately "simple" web app
Even if I would've bought Nvidia, Bitcoin, or whatever stock... who is to say I would've had the balls to hold it all the way to whatever they're at today. I probably would've ended up like the guy who spent 10,000 bitcoin on a pizza.
