The point it does "apply the same". And sometimes it doesn't apply, but it doesn't apply "the same" between Google and avg Elias - at least as far as I can see.

You are misrepresenting what I said. I am talking about fairness of application of law. I am sure Finns are all law abiding citizens, but the point is that regulations are overcomplicated, and a lot of people knowingly or unknowingly violate some a lot of time. In construction in particular.

My claim is that Google is getting unfair (in their favor) treatment is incorrect, because average Elias will also get no or next to no negative consequences making a very similar mistake on average Elias's scale.

The fact that some rules are strictly enforced does not mean all are.

> It's about fairness.

It is a nothingburger from the fairness point as well. People knowingly and unknowingly violate a lot of permitting processes all the time and in many cases never suffer any consequences even if discovered, unless they have zealous neighbors.

lostmsu··on I can't believe PowerShell is good
I stopped using Windows Terminal altogether because it somehow tends to crash the processes running inside its tabs. And I have a lot of terminals open.

An example issue: https://github.com/microsoft/terminal/issues/16363 . This exact error message with different codes happened to me across many machines at many different times. Never seen anything like that with the classic console host.

lostmsu··on I can't believe PowerShell is good
In terminal I would do

  gci -F<tab> *.txt -force
In this particular case I would type the word force out but with other parameters starting with `f` I would just use <tab> until I get the right one.

lostmsu··on Do dentists know what they're doing?
I stopped going to dentists since COVID started. Only two exceptions: had to come when one of the crowns unglued and needed to be glued back. Twice. In these 7 years I had minor toothache start one time and seems to have resolved it by applying a diluted fluoride-based mouthwash to that tooth using a water flosser a couple of times.
lostmsu··on Do dentists know what they're doing?
In Russia we have a relevant joke that in the context would roughly translate as

A patient checks the dentist’s bill.
  - What’s this item: ‘Maybe — $800’?
  - Maybe not, then, - says the dentist, crossing it out.

That's because the relationship between a tool and its wielder is primarily in intelligence.

I can make up a plausible sci-fi explanation for the need easily: the folded space might not look like our almost euclidean geometry. Maybe in folded space masses take volume proportional to the mass.

Could even envision it in some future film. E.g. when NCC-1701-N goes to warp in addition to the blur effect all the stars swell up.

I bet you should shot the journalist here. Having sexual feelings toward fictional characters is basically watching porn. You can't bucket that with romantic. I bet the journalist confused the two in the that remark. There's no romantic "parasocial" behavior there.

lostmsu··on Is 'Attention' the Essence of Intelligence?
> First, kernel smoothing with a particular exponential kernel function

Well, here's the thing. Kernel smoothing uses Euclidean distances. "with a particular exponential kernel function" is the novel bit. I even gave an example of what absurdity you will get if you allow arbitrary addition like this to the term.

> every assertion here is mistaken. ... Second, ..

Never made that assertion.

> Many use cases find it helpful to have a real-valued kernel function that is positive and semidefinite, or nonnegative and integrating to 1, or whatever

Yeah, that's the kernel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_(statistics). What you feed to the kernel is Euclidean distance. That's where the difference is.

> you definitely can have a kernel function that is "uniform"

You did not get that point. See response to your "First". I was explaining why the reasoning that led you to "attention == kernel smoothing" is faulty - if you apply it to averaging, you will get "averaging == kernel smoothing". Because kernel smoothing is "just" averaging with distance based weights. So attention is "just" kernel smoothing with Q-K based distance function. The issue is in both cases the part after "with " does all the heavy lifting.

lostmsu··on Is 'Attention' the Essence of Intelligence?
You are making an excuse for a poor observation. "the Essence of Intelligence" applies to the current models, and they do not require positional encoding, but they do require attention.
