loufe··on Jailbreaking my car's navigation system just so I can change the time
I've been thinking about this for a 2016 Toyota in the family which has a quirky but decent enough idea for the main screen where a local DB file is consulted and a saved picture of the currently playing artist is displayed.

Sounds great but there are some hilarious examples where the fuzzing of the name (best guess, I figure in case the name is slightly wrongly typed - mp3 era) is far too loose. "Bayonne" is showing a picture of Beyoncé and "Steve Lacy" is showing a bald white guy. It has become one of those things in life where I get a bit excited to see who a brand new artist will get as the matched image, reminds me of childhood, honestly.

I figure with the game decompilation news I'm seeing the reverse engineering of the firmware (or at least the DB format) would not be a significant challenge, and it would mix in some fun other tasks like compiling (and signing?) a new DB with tons of images and names, and then figuring out how to avoid bricking a vehicles computer while doing so. But... like I assume many others here... I've got enough projects on the go right now so maybe in a few months.

loufe··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
Is there any good GUI for a vanilla Linux networking stack, to your knowledge?
loufe··on First response from the Project Suncatcher prototype satellite
This was a completely vapid article. I expected some technical details at least, but instead it's an LLM generated poem confirming it worked in a short interval, which nobody doubts it would. All eyes are on long term heat dissipation and the impact of radiation and success of radiation hardening meterials and processes.
loufe··on An Italian farmer found some unknown seeds in his attic and planted them
I know I tend to like some takeaway "summary" comments on HN, but this one just feels like snippets from an LLM reading the article. What's the thinking? The original text isn't particularly long or dense, and this isn't commentary.
loufe··on Biltong.ai
I'm not quite sure how this relates to AI, which without any context past the domain name I think it's fair to assume there should be.
loufe··on Is my data used for model training?
Ah my bad, sleepy morning on my end.
loufe··on Is my data used for model training?
In what way are you "ensuring" it? They still have a plaintext copy on their servers and could ad arbitrarily decide to train on it (for instance, saying it raised a safety flag).
loufe··on Is my data used for model training?
That link is speculation at best. I wouldn't tell my family yet not to do that. Insane if true, but let's not jump at speculation.
loufe··on Oregon Police Are Charging a Local News Outlet $2.5M for Records About One Cop
It can be both, one situation to the next.
loufe··on The Goose Programming Language
There's a section at the bottom called "History & Use of AI". Please do your part to keep the discussion here honest and healthy, if not a read of the post, at least a ctrl-f would have been sage.
loufe··on Canadians are running out of time to oppose Bill C-22
I'm getting an error loading the page.
loufe··on Canadians are running out of time to oppose Bill C-22
I'm not sure what more to do then to annoy my friends and family and speak with my MP (done), who had already voted against it. Canada's political system seems healthy compared to the USA, but it doesn't feel healthy objectively.
loufe··on Sixteen years after Deepwater Horizon, deep sea life shows few signs of recovery
It's not really your argument, but to be clear nobody is actually claiming the US followed Israel into war with Iran because of oil.
loufe··on RuneScape Bench: MMOs for Agents [video]
It certainly was my first taste of programming and stoked a lifelong interest in computers which has served me very well.
loufe··on MiniMax M3.1 Flash
Odd choice to have a mix of opus 5 and 5.5 in different graphics.
loufe··on Mercury 3: Diffusion at scale
I'm very curious what the actual model size is and how the training process differed from a traditional LLM. Cool work regardless, incredible how catching up to a few months behind the cutting edge now seems like an achievable feat for new entrants, if still quite costly.
loufe··on AI is mass decompiling games. That's both awesome and scary
forgot the second comma after '"bought"'
loufe··on AI is mass decompiling games. That's both awesome and scary
I would argue this actually pushes up the desire for such games. We'll be inundated with games at decent/good games, and our standards will adjust. Maybe something an imperfect analogy would be watching a decent tv series at home but going to the movie theatre for a Dennis Villeneuve movie.
loufe··on AI is mass decompiling games. That's both awesome and scary
Other comments have mentioned it, even in this thread, but I am fairly certain the biggest change this will bring about (very, very sadly) is games and software from big companies being hosted server-side and streaming in content like some video games now do.

This is the future I always wanted, full control over the hardware and software I "bought" but I think we will end up lamenting our moment of empowerment in one way as the time we lost even more agency in the end.

Personal computing is increasingly under threat by government and big corporations, we all need to be vigilant and fight back.

loufe··on Thunderbird for iOS
I get this, but most email is through Google and Microsoft in NA, at least, neither of which seem to care to support JMAP at all, on fact they are getting locked down more and more.
loufe··on A look at the math that OpenAI claims computes faster Fourier transforms
I am astounded by the activity in this repo... what is going on? 508 PRs on 408 commits..? It's getting additions at a frenetic pace by a large number of contributors.
loufe··on DuckDB Ducklake
Why program greenfield in C++? I know "made with rust" is a meme but seriously, why not a memory safe language in 2026?
loufe··on What ArtCraft's Vibe-Coded Apps Say About Adobe
Why would they suck the oxygen out of the room? This sounds like claiming a new distro of Linux made by new rufugees from Desktop Windows for people accustomed to Windows desktops is harming Linux by ensuring they don't go to some existing flavour which defaults middle mouse paste and thinks everyone must go on a spiritual journey of becoming one with cli tools in order to set up their social media and documenting editing machine. New people are making something they want and are empowered to make something they want, not something we've all been grateful for but bemoaned as a comparise.

For example, I love GIMP but holy shit it was a downgrade from Adobe in most ways.GIMP should stay GIMP, though, I wouldn't want my tools being completely overhauled in terms of UI and workflow anyways. I'm sure the old heads who put TLC into it would be strongly against someone using AI to significantly rewrite it at base, but also changing the interface and how it works significantly enough to matter to users. It's a sad way how it's been gone about, but in a sense this new software is building on GIMP (among many, many others) shoulders by developing openly and allowing the lessons on how to do things be adopted and not re-learned.

loufe··on Claude Code’s suggested message feature: I think the real customer is the model
Their entire point is that this is OSTENSIBLY the point.
loufe··on Supabase is acquiring Turso
Best tested..? The test data/suite is private. That alone is quite odd.
loufe··on Your Big Mac might cost more if McDonald's AI thinks people nearby can afford it
This is a poor take and reads like a strawman. The post is mentioning locations 2 miles from one another varying by almost $2USD for the same product.
loufe··on Cloudflare K2: serverless event streams
If I was a serious Cloudflare customer I would be seriously concerned about the security of my infrastructure with them. Yes LLMs can code fast but this is an almost frenetic pace of releasing new products, all with fewer staff.
loufe··on Gemini 4 Argon
What? You mean the technique they had turned OFF during all training run where the agents they are responsible for hacked huggingface?
loufe··on Gemini 4 Argon
And a stake in SpaceX
loufe··on It's Time to Investigate the AI Labs
Listening to Dwark's interview of Noam last week was bewildering. The gall of the figureheads for these companies to say things like "chain of thought monitoring cannot be relied on without potentially poisoning the well", while also saying "we need to pace the frontier but please still trust us [and so called" independent " 3rd party firms which at least in one case is actually a significant stakeholder in Anthropic] to self police" and THEN "chain of thought monitoring was turned off but we have 'more, robust monitoring tools in place now'" is absolutely insane as it is coming out live that your model in training is still committing felonies.

Corporate influence in government in the USA is wild.
