luiperd··on US Border Patrol says they can create central repository of traveler emails
What's a reasonable way to protect yourself here? Other than wiping and restoring. Are there any encryption tools, or ways to keep your emails and other data on your device safe?

Can CBP make you unlock your own phone?

luiperd··on Whatever’s Best For The People, That’s What We Do
| She's a director, and by definition totally in bed with the leadership.

This is what's wrong with society today. Assumptions that are both wrong and sexist. Good job sir.

luiperd··on South Africa's Nelson Mandela dies
Bafana actually refers to the South African soccer team (correctly “Bafana Bafana”), and does translate to "boys." Just an fyi.
luiperd··on HTC One Google Edition announced, launching June 26th for $599
You make a good point, but (actually) happy with my current phone plan and wouldn't mind extending another two years for a cheaper HTC One with stock android.
luiperd··on HTC One Google Edition announced, launching June 26th for $599
I've been wanting to switch to HTC One, from an iPhone 4S, for a while now. But I wasn't a big fan of HTC's custom software.

But I agree, this is pretty darn expensive.

luiperd··on Flickr's redesign makes it a photo service actually worth sharing
Overall I really like the new Flickr layout, especially the main photo stream. It's more of a Portfolio that one can use rather than a collection of your photos one after the other.

What I don't like is the single photo page. The photo itself is nice and big, which I like. But once you scroll past it it's pretty much a cluster fuck of information that looks very much out of place. It looks like they didn't even bother to make it blend well with the page.

"But it's still jarring to see buses zooming across 3 blocks in 5 seconds."

Not far from reality with some of the bus drivers in this city.

Isn't the full Windows 8 license only available to MSDN subscribers though?

You have to create a new account on that page with the email you used when you bought the deal.
luiperd··on FBI wants real-time Gmail, Dropbox spying power
Some interesting discussion on Reddit about this, too. Especially the top comment.

luiperd··on Show HN: Lechat – team chat for developers
Nice. I was at first very confused about the support room chat, thought it was just a page to help you get started. Turns out it's a support chat for the app.

Very nice though.

luiperd··on $49 Personal Genome at 23andme (incognito windows until you get the best price)
I think it's usually $199 or $299. (that was the first price I saw)
luiperd··on Show HN: instafilter.io, a cloud API for applying filters to images
I've been using CamanJS for a while now: http://camanjs.com/
luiperd··on Show HN: Weekend project in science-based art - GetAblation.com
Since they are one off prints, that can bump the price up a bit. Especially when you include shipping and all that. So I don't find it that expensive.
luiperd··on Yesterday, I Went to the American Idol for Startups. It Made Me Want to Die.
I don't mind it, but it sounds like someone with a lisp is trying to say Aflac.
luiperd··on Show HN: Easel, web design in the browser
Then you need to get a designer that knows how the web works! It shocks me when I see fellow designers make things that's not feasible on the web.
luiperd··on Gorgeous Unreal Engine 4 brings direct programming, indirect lighting
I wonder how well this'll run on the GTX 570 (or two of 'em). Wish they'd release a demo for people to play with.
luiperd··on Sortfolio auction only has 24 hours left with 0 Bids
They blogged about the sale.

I think one of the bigger turn offs might be the fact that the new owner will have to get everyone to setup their payment method once they switch. Because the current payment system relies on 37Signal's own.

luiperd··on Change your Last.fm password
But how many people have throwaway passwords on sites like these? It might not mean much to the tech-savvy community, but I'm sure a lot of people use the same password for a lot of services.

They might not be able to do much with your account on Last.fm, but they have your email, for which you may or may not use the same password.

luiperd··on Cleaner Hacker News
I also use this one, very clean!
