Just another front-end developer. And tech writer. And a bit of an AFOL. And a geek maybe.

lukaszkups··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (November 2023)
SEEKING WORK | REMOTE | WORLDWIDE, EUROPE | ASYNC IDEAL

Technologies: JavaScript/Typescript, Vue.js 2 / 3, Vite, Construct 3, Node.js

Location: Poland

Remote: Yes

Willing to relocate: no

Available since: 1st January 2024

Hi, I'm a web developer from Poland with 13+ years of experience working on Front-End side of web applications.

I love creating nice and useful things for the Internet people.

At the moment I feel most comfortable in working on Vue.js-powered Single Page Applications. Don't get it wrong though, I totally believe in can-do mindset and learning other frameworks shouldn't be a huge problem - in the end it's just a tool (that said I also know basics of React.js). My current free-time focus is oriented towards HTML5 game development (and I would love to learn more if possible about it, but it's not a must-have!).

My current contract lasts until the end of this year (so that I am available since January 2024).

lukaszkups··on Ask HN: How do you use AI to get things done faster?
I've used ChatGPT couple times to write quicker some boring math calculations to my JavaScript game engine that I've been working on recently.
lukaszkups··on Front-end is harder than back-end
Putting aside opinion about FE vs BE difficulty - I had similar problem (but while working with Vue.js framework which is irrelevant anyway as you probably can use similar solution to any stack you need) and I've solved it via using something called DOM recycle, you can find an example here: https://github.com/topics/dom-recycle
lukaszkups··on I still use Flash
I do really enjoyed this kin-of-post-mortem! Please write more, I'd love to hear about your other projects!

As a side note: In my opinion the closest replacement for Flash is currently Construct 3 engine - you should definitely take a look on it! (I'm not associated with Construct 3 team (Scirra) by any means - I'm just a happy user of their product)

lukaszkups··on Ask HN: What are some blog posts that you have enjoyed going through?
Everything at http://www.minimallyminimal.com/ website - I wish Andrew Kim still maintain his blog as he used to be.

Also I've learned recently about https://androidarts.com/ and still browsing through it - such a great inspiration source!

lukaszkups··on Ask HN: What habits did you achieve this year?
Maybe not habits, but I've managed to get back to trampoline/airtrack acrobatics which is an result of couple years of getting back into shape and general condition.

I've also started drinkin way more water (earlier I was drinking coffee only and diet Coke)

lukaszkups··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
that question sounds like a start of a joke :D
lukaszkups··on Linux on the laptop works so damn well that it’s boring
Also related: Linux Subsystem for Windows works in similar manner (at least for me!) - I've switched couple years ago from Linux -> OSX -> Linux -> WSL (when WSL was in 1.x version at the time and lacking from couple features) and gosh, I've never looked back since then

(disclaimer: I'm a front-end developer (and making games in my spare time using various tools) and for my needs I've never found a serious complain about how WSL works)

lukaszkups··on Why adults still dream about school
I feel totally the same! Even though I don't have particularly bad experiences from school I do really prefer my current stage of life, where I work and learn about things that I'm really interested in.
lukaszkups··on We Need New Motherboards Before GPUs Collapse Under Their Own Gravity
To the author: I see what you did there and I like that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners reference ^,^
lukaszkups··on What VS Code theme do you use?
Monokai
lukaszkups··on What it takes to make a game by yourself
Me, actually- I've played in the past flash game Taberinos- before I've found out what its title was I've made a similar game for myself - and that's how BOINK! has been made: https://lukaszkups.itch.io/boink
lukaszkups··on Don’t teach kids to fear the world
yeah I was raised in similar manner, but as a father of 2 right now I see - in my personal case - the biggest difference that makes me afraid about my kids:

I don't know around half of my closest neighbours

It's not that I don't want to get to know them, it's that everyone are so busy (me included) that I don't simply have time to align with them to learn more about them better.

Also, tons of people are moving in and moving out all the time.

It wasn't the case in my home village - I knew a lot of people and even more people (my parent friends that I didn't know) knew who I was. I could bet at that time that if something bad was going on for me, there would be someone who will help me without any struggle.

In my current place is different. Even my relatives who stayed in my home town can agree that even there a lot of people are moving in and out and they don't know all of the townspeople anymore.

lukaszkups··on Film: Frame Interpolation for Large Motion
And imagine that its graphic is being generated on EVERY NEW GAME START so there won't be ever same experiences :O
lukaszkups··on Ask HN: Is there a developer laptop that does not suck and is not a Mac in 2022?
I've just switched from Surface Book 2 to Zenbook 14 OLED (UX3402ZA)

Pros:

- beautiful, bright display with 16:10 aspect ratio

- comfortable keyboard with backlight

- pretty decent battery life for my programming needs

- port selection (1 x USB 3.2 (2 Gen), 2x Thunderbolt 4, HDMI and audio jack)

- good performance

- beautiful design

Cons:

- if you try to run some games on it (it has Iris Xe Graphic card) - it will become hot very quickly

I've choose Zenbook, because I had one in the past (UX32LN model) - and it still holds up pretty well and works flawlessly while being used for office stuff by my wife (it will have 7 years now)

lukaszkups··on Ask HN: Boring but important tech no one is working on?
This is really neat feature, I wish all games have such functionality (especially RPGs!)
lukaszkups··on Ask HN: Boring but important tech no one is working on?
Totally this.

I was never stressed out in terms of English language (I'm from Poland) because I've rarely (never) switched game languages to any other language than English.

When I was ~10 years old I've played through whole Final Fantasy 8 which I was obsessed at the time thanks to my older brother with a PAPER dictionary on the desk (I was translating stuff that I didn't understand) and I think that was the most effective way and time when I've learned most of the English language in my life.

Now I'm trying to encourage slowly my kids and I switch game languages they play from time to time.

lukaszkups··on Ask HN: Can I see your scripts?
Oh gosh, that made me soo nostalgic - I did such mono .sh file to boost my system setup couple years ago as elementaryOS at the time was not supporting updates and I had to do a clean install when new release was published: https://github.com/mrmnmly/linux-installation-script/blob/ma...

When I read it today I miss those soo oversimplified solutions to do stuff :'-)

lukaszkups··on Microsoft Windows is prohibited at Gitlab
I think WSL solves that problem
lukaszkups··on Ask HN: How do you do version control of no-code apps?
I'm making games in Construct 3 game engine, which is mostly drag-and-drop based - but it saves your projects in its own file format, which I download and put into dedicated git repo, just to track changes and have a safe copy just in case I mess something up.
lukaszkups··on Ask HN: Is it possible to get an 18-year-old to spend less time on the computer?
If it's possible for your relative - let him/her ask if there's anything useful he/she would like to in front of his/her computer - let it be programming, translations, graphics - heck, even becoming a podcaster/youtuber and try to help him/her with that - it might turn into something useful for his/her career in the future.
lukaszkups··on Ask HN: How do you store photos and videos?
Me & my wife use microsoft's cloud service (due to our historical addition to Windows Phone OS).

Then it's being sync'ed to our home NAS, which is manually turned on and connected to the Internet once in a while (like once per month or so) - it has 2 HDDs connected as a RAID (so there's a 2nd copy of the 1st one).

Besides that, every year close to Chrismas we're sitting together and selecting photos from last year we would like to print for ourselves and our relatives (which are then put into the album).

When our cloud storage is close to 100%, we're just wiping everything there,as delete procedure does not sync into our NAS (it was configured like that on purpose).

lukaszkups··on Show HN: Colorvote.io – ranking all sRGB web colors by popularity
What am I looking on? How to see the rank of the colors?
lukaszkups··on Ask HN: What's is your go to toolset for simple front end development?
Vite + Vue.js 2 + Scss
lukaszkups··on Ask HN: Does anybody still use bookmarking services?
Similarly to other commenters here, I would like to share my approach:

- if it's an article related to my interests and that fits for the overall contents I share on twitter - I simply tweet about it.

- if it's code-related (e.g. github repo) - I just "star" it

- if it's something else - it depends what category it is, because I have two bookmark folders in the browser: "4 later" (so that if something seems to be interesting but I don't have time right now to read it) or "saved" folder where I just put something that I would like to have bookmarked (I've also have then nested year sub-folders (as I don't bookmark THAT often that this approach wouldn't be sufficient for me)).

- if something is very important for me, I simply send an e-mail to myself with tagged content so I can easily find it through e-mail search engine later - I have a dedicated e-mail suffix for this (imagine xyz+bookmark@gmail.com) and it automatically goes archived into "bookmarks" folder instead to inbox.

lukaszkups··on Dentistry is less scientific and more gratuitous than people think (2019)
> In other medical contexts, such as a visit to a general practitioner or a cardiologist, we are fairly accustomed to seeking a second opinion before agreeing to surgery or an expensive regimen of pills with harsh side effects. But in the dentist’s office—perhaps because we both dread dental procedures and belittle their medical significance—the impulse is to comply without much consideration, to get the whole thing over with as quickly as possible.

Around 10 years ago, during one of the dentists appointment, my wife had to perform an x-ray scan of the whole mouth. Besides the stuff dentist wanted to confirm, he found out that she has her wisdom teeth grew in a little problematic direction that might become painful in very short time and suggested to remove them before that happens.

That said, such operation would require narcosis. Both of us are very skeptical when someone wants to do something for us that requires putting us into that state so we've gone to another dentist to get another opinion.

Turned out, that other dentist said that he don't see any problem with my wife's wisdom teeth and warned us, that the operation other dentist suggested was very dangerous and had high probability that it could break some jaw nerves very easily which could lead to partly face paralysis.

So yeah, 10 years has passed and my wife has never experienced any pain caused by her wisdom teeth - maybe got lucky or maybe that 1st dentist was just plain wrong.

But in the end I've always tend to be warned and while having any doubts, it's worth to spend some money just to double check if suggested treatment is really good for us (or necessary).

lukaszkups··on Ask HN: How much did you pay for your smartphone?
Around $200 - refurbished Galaxy Note 10.

Usually, $300 is my maximum I wish to spend when I need to change a phone.

lukaszkups··on Ask HN: Books worth reading multiple times?
"Blood, Sweat, and Pixels: The Triumphant, Turbulent Stories Behind How Video Games Are Made" by Jason Schreier - especially episode about Stardew Valley - I just enjoy those stories, they are such an inspiration :)
