lukeify··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
I'm hopeful Reddit will succumb to the same fate. There's too many power hungry people who capriciously control large elements of societal communication these days.
lukeify··on New iMac with M6
I agree with you, but Apple's monitor situation is letting everybody down. Not having a 32" monitor for professionals is frustrating. I am glad I bought my Pro Display XDR.
lukeify··on New iMac with M6
Many people report poor colour and uniformity with the panels Kuycon use. Also just on the specs alone the brightness is dismal.
lukeify··on I will no longer upload to NEW
Hate to say it but this is one of the primary reasons I can never get interested in contributing to open source.
lukeify··on Three new discoveries in mathematics, computer science, and physics
Not enough chatter about the QCD result here! I'm of the opinion that whatever the correct representation of the universe is, the GUT (Grand Unified Theory) will be authored not by humans but by LLMs.
lukeify··on Show HN: Steal My Bitcoin
The implication of your comment is that the exploit is not trivial and magically available to anyone with some tokens to bash together, which refutes the position that there is an horde of AI agents and people compromising sites en-masse.
lukeify··on Show HN: Steal My Bitcoin
What an insufferable comment. For all the hullabaloo discussing the economic value of time about $500 being an insufficient prize, you still spent what I can only assume is several minutes penning a comment that derives you zero economic value whatever.
lukeify··on Speeding up code review with `small-change`
The criteria is unfit for purpose because as it stands it doesn't align with the ideals of what a "small change" is. And it's HN, not a COMP101 class.

> I won't respond further.

That's okay, I don't care.

lukeify··on Apple Music 404 Not Found
Using the haptics in the MacBook touchpads for this would've been next level.
lukeify··on UN says breaching 1.5C warming limit is 'imminent and unavoidable'
It's absurd how even surrounded by wealth, an abundance of resources, and a beautiful natural environment; we continue this frenetic hustle culture of committing ourselves to collectively overworking our planet and society, like coked up hamsters on a wheel.

There's numerous times I've thought of checking out with the (little) wealth I have and becoming a hitch-hiking vagrant and enjoying my time in nature with friends instead.

lukeify··on Speeding up code review with `small-change`
How the rule is composed with other rules is irrelevant to my statement that a small change is not "1000 lines".
lukeify··on Speeding up code review with `small-change`
> Something is a small-change if it meets all of these criteria it is less than 1,000 lines of code

Only my personal view but even 1000 LoC is not a "small change".

lukeify··on Ofcom concedes defeat in 4chan case
We need to start collectively shaming individuals in the tech sector who work for these censorious government agencies and do their bidding.
lukeify··on Nordwand Mono – A monospace font for coders and adventurers
Setting aside the other ways AI is upending society, I absolutely love how we can all share and build on simple artifacts and micro-apps now that can be built entirely from our brain's vision expressed in plain English.

That's a really fun tool.

lukeify··on Chicago O'Hare digs up 50-ton boulder under airfield, asks public for name ideas
O’Hareball!
lukeify··on Bleached corals thrive within days when touching healthy neighbour
Don't worry, overpopulation will come back as a concern when we get massive crop collapse due to climate change.
lukeify··on Pele – Mermaid diagrams as themeable SVG
Anytime I try mermaid for anything more complex than a toy diagram I always end up absolutely frustrated by the arcane and topologically poor layout that is produced.

Styling seems like a trivial problem by comparison.

lukeify··on Dam removals are bringing fish back across the northeastern United States
Flood control and water storage for agriculture in drier summer months are the big ones.
lukeify··on Dam removals are bringing fish back across the northeastern United States
Most of these dams were either in disrepair, had geotechnical problems, or were sufficiently silted up they didn't generate much power anyway. A few dozen rooftop solar installations probably generate more power.
lukeify··on Dam removals are bringing fish back across the northeastern United States
In your opinion.

It's clearly being empathetic to the area's history, and it's taken from a vantage point that you won't often see anyway.

lukeify··on Claude reveals ECDSA curve origins
This is also why one of the Zodiac ciphers remained unsolved for so long. The dude made a mistake in his transcription.
lukeify··on Woman who rescued injured crow keeps getting 'thank-you gifts' from birds [video]
There's something beautifully eloquent about how a bundle of feathers may be one of this person's most cherished gifts they ever receive, no amount of money can match that.
lukeify··on We’re releasing Jev 1.14.0 along with experimental features for dreamers
Swiss Style/Typographic Style.
lukeify··on The United Kingdom generates less electricity per person than in the 1970s
At such a high concordance as to see ideologies disappear from the population? Or is it more likely that ideologies and people's beliefs are from social and environmental feedback?
lukeify··on The United Kingdom generates less electricity per person than in the 1970s
Except ideologies aren't genetic are they?
lukeify··on The RAM shortage is bringing back DDR4
Can you explain why? To my thinking, the liquidator is a business in possession of a valuable asset that they could sell for a profit; but perhaps I'm misunderstanding something.
lukeify··on China Overtakes U.S. For First Time as Top Spender on R&D in 2024
Political polarisation is also at a point where it's become sports team-esque. People are willing to go to further extremes to dunk on the other side, even if it means the stadium is becoming increasingly messy.
lukeify··on The RAM shortage is bringing back DDR4
Liquidators aren't going to care about "the market", they will try and get in first and profit on on-selling equipment at a lucrative price.
lukeify··on The RAM shortage is bringing back DDR4
A company can either generate a small new revenue stream from on-selling old gear, or they can pay to destroy and dispose of it.

Which option is a profit-oriented, not-totally-profitable AI outfit going to choose?

lukeify··on ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust
It was enshittified the moment it became a single app.

Serious publishers don't want a photo editing program in their UI.
