mac-attack··on Show HN: ZenTasker – Open-source, calm GTD task manager (pre-code launch)
Good luck! The first thing that comes to mind for me is how will you differentiate yourself from taskwarrior (it is also open source and based off of getting things done)

I'm assuming you won't have to understand or use the command line even if taskwarrior's utilization is pretty straightforward? Id imagine that simple cross-device synchronization might be a target area similarly? Just some random thoughts that come to mind

mac-attack··on Unleashing Linux on Android: A Developer's Playground
It's good to see someone with documentation as most of the post I've seen have just been marketing related.
mac-attack··on Adding Mastodon Comments to Your Blog
This is where I'm struggling. I have Bluesky comments set up but am of the impression that mastodon comments will be completely separate and clunky as a result
mac-attack··on Discover the IndieWeb, one blog post at a time
Another good resource is https://searchmysite.net

It is great for searching the indieweb with your interests as the keywords

mac-attack··on DOGE puts $1 spending limit on government employee credit cards
I agree and would add that people aren't machines either. The concept of 'fire everyone and rehire who is essential' seems to lack comprehension of human psychology. It seems analogous to 'cheat on everyone and marry the person who stays' in that you are settling for the people who have the least self-respect and/or the least amount of options outside of their current position.

Please let me know if you know of any options to streamline the process.
mac-attack··on Can we communally deprecate git checkout?
"The new commands, by contrast, aim to clearly separate the responsibilities of git checkout into two narrower categories: operations which change branches and operations which change files."

Simple, concise breakdown

mac-attack··on Spying on Student Devices, Schools Aim to Intercept Self-Harm Before It Happens
False alarms for the most part appear to be just someone scanning and disregarding an issue like surveillance watching someone to make sure they aren't stealing in the supermarket. There are more intrusive ones, but that appears to be edge cases in my reading of the article.

I do break from the perspective of the majority here and believe that the interventions do outweigh the false alarms given that. I do think laws need to be established so that what warrants flagging is clear and apolitical and that the tracking cannot be used for any purposes outside of safety (ie if a kid talks about cheating on a test and t is found through this method, it should be disregarded)

mac-attack··on Silicon Valley, the new lobbying monster
Because you need to be/stay elected in order to enforce policy.

As an aside, one could easily replace 'crypto-currency' with 'fascism' in your comment to accurately describe why Republicans are following a similar tact in spite of the benefits of a democracy

mac-attack··on The Bands and the Fans Were Fake. The $10M Was Real
I'll bite. How does Spotify benefit from paying $10m to an artist that few people have heard of/listen to?
mac-attack··on KDE Asking for Donations
Never hurts to read the article first: "It’s small and unobtrusive, and no matter what you do with it (click any button, close it, etc) it’ll go away until next year. It’s implemented as a KDE Daemon (KDED) module, which allows users and distributors to permanently disable it if they like. You can also disable just the popup on System Settings’ Notifications page, accessible from the configure button in the notification’s header."
mac-attack··on Claude 3.5 Sonnet
I'm sticking w/ Claude for the foreseeable future as they seem less slimy than OpenAI/Microsoft/Google so far and care about safety.

I'm in the same boat waiting for an Android app btw. One other feature that I'm hoping they catch up to others on is a permanent context window so that I can get Claude to stop speaking so formally all the time

mac-attack··on Ex-OpenAI board member reveals what led to Sam Altman's brief ousting
> It would be like telling the government that no, in fact they are the ones who are wrong and no, I didn’t break the law it is in fact their laws which are broken.

Reminds me of the Wirecard scandal doc on Netflix. Wirecard was so powerful that the financial regulators (BaFin) started targeting journalists and actively defending a publicly traded company.

mac-attack··on Microsoft stoops to new low with ads in Windows 11
Last summer, I dual booted Linux for a few weeks and then made the plunge. My reason was that my desktop didn't meet the TPM requirements and I saw the writing on the walls re: subscriptions as a service, Reddit API apocalypse, etc.

To those interested, I say WSL -> Dual boot a browser -> dual boot more -> make the plunge.

It is unlearning/relearning ways of doing things that have been ingrained since elementary school for many of us, so there's an initial learning curve.

Ummm dating and breakups?

mac-attack··on I Lost Faith in Kagi
And I think that the inability to explicitly confirm relationships w/ Stripe et al are ways that users cannot determine whether they are paying w/ their data on top of their monthly costs.
mac-attack··on Filipino police free slaves toiling in romance scam operation
There's a deep dive into it via the 'Search Engine' podcast (Has PJ Vogt from 'Reply All' fame). The episode is called "Who's behind these spammy texts that I keep getting"

mac-attack··on OpenAI and Elon Musk
With all due respect, they are not doing a sleight of hand while selling widgets... they are in the process of reshaping society in a way that may have never been achieved previously. Finding out that their initial motives were a facade doesn't portend well for their morality as they continue to gain power.
mac-attack··on Electric bikes give more exercise than pedal bikes
To summarize, eBike users are more likely to use their bikes than regular bike users. Click-bait adjacent title.

Kudos to Casey Newton. Looking forward to his informal breakdown on Hard Fork podcast tomorrow.
mac-attack··on Chrultrabook Docs
After being a Chromebook user since 2013, last year I transitioned my latest Chromebook to a chrultrabook for privacy purposes and to actively avoid Google. I did install Linux on a Windows laptop initially, but the Chromebook keyboard layout is more modern given my usage (mostly web browsing and media consumption)

They also have a new forum as well if people have questions: https://forum.chrultrabook.com/
