mackrevinack··on Microsoft will switch off Recall by default after security backlash
make it a separate program that people can install if they want to. if its really that great then people will download it
mackrevinack··on PySheets – Spreadsheet UI for Python
grist is sort of similar. its a spreadsheet/database hybrid that lets you use python for formulas, and they have a self-hosted option:

mackrevinack··on Minimal phone gets back to basics with E Ink display and real keyboard
or something like the yotaphone where it has an eink screen on the back. the specs were always pretty awful though
mackrevinack··on Ask HN: What do I do with my side projects?
"a 3d scammer app" this one sounds like the real money maker :p
mackrevinack··on Since when does Windows support forward slash as path separator?
i only recently noticed that powershell accepts ~ as a shortcut for your user folder. anyone know how long that had been a thing?
mackrevinack··on The Cassette-Tape Revolution
the good thing about miniDisc is that its relatively easy to get the tracks back off it again. like if you wanted to share a disc with a friend, they could copy the tracks onto their computer using webminidisc or some other software. all the software is a bit old and janky but it's quicker than having to copy a tape!
mackrevinack··on Is this radical redesign of GIMP possible now?
i used to have a lot of trouble finding things as well until i discovered the command pallette (the / key opens it). now i do nearly most things just by fuzzy searching for them
mackrevinack··on Original photo from Led Zeppelin IV album cover discovered
usually the polite way of going about it is to credit the original artist in some way but it seems zeppelin didn't make any attempt whatsoever. dazed and confused is a good example. its not just copying a chord progression and taking it from there, it was the whole thing, the name, the melody
mackrevinack··on Tao Te Ching – Gia-Fu Feng, Jane English Translation (1989)
has anyone read the translation by james legge? that's the only copy i have but i haven't got around to reading it yet. would it be better to go with something else even if i have to pay for it?

mackrevinack··on Firefox got faster for real users in 2023
heres a few general ones. on my linux computers i have a bash script to install firefox, then it sets up symlink of the user.js file from my own config folder to the default .config folder. on windows i just manually add it

  user_pref("browser.aboutConfig.showWarning", "false"); // disable about:config warning
  user_pref("browser.startup.page", 3); // restore previous session
user_pref("browser.ctrlTab.sortByRecentlyUsed", "true"); // cycles tabs in recently used order
user_pref("signon.rememberSignons", "false"); // dont ask to save passwords
user_pref("browser.search.suggest.enabled", "false"); // disable address bar suggestions
user_pref("toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets", "true"); // enable custom css
this is the only css i could find that i like since it keeps the window controls as well, although since a recent update, theyre just showing as a white box now but they still works https://github.com/mbnuqw/sidebery/issues/458#issuecomment-9...
mackrevinack··on Firefox got faster for real users in 2023
the user.js file is a very underrated feature as well. i have a few computers and some of them are dual boot which means i have a lot of firefox installs so its great just being able to drop in the user.js file and have everything set up the way i like it
mackrevinack··on Satya Nadella admits giving up on Windows Phone and mobile was a mistake
the name was a bit of a mouthful as well "windows phone 7 series". or even worse if "microsoft's" had to be added at the start of it
mackrevinack··on A Brief Introduction to Military Pillboxes
you can find some of them on openstreetmap by searching for "bunker_type=pillbox"

mackrevinack··on What every developer should know about GPU computing
not sure if this is what you have in mind but Code by Charles Petzold might be worth checking out
mackrevinack··on F-Droid: Android FOSS app store
nice. i like that neo store let's you bookmark things
mackrevinack··on Wireless is a trap (2020)
when i was younger we made good use of those headphone splitters to share music on the bus home from school or wherever. how long has bluetooth been a thing now and it still doesnt have that feature? i use bluetooth headphones here and there but i would never consider it to be a replacement to analog
mackrevinack··on Wireless is a trap (2020)
another plus for using a bluetooth reciever. something like the fiio btr3. it still works while charging and can be used with any headphones or earbuds. it will hopefully last me longer too since i probably have more chance of replacing the battery compared to the types that are in headphones
mackrevinack··on Scrollbars are becoming a problem
that really bugs me any time i have to use a Windows computer. on linux (on pop os or zorin os at least) you just hold down the super/windows key and then left click and drag anywhere on the window to move it.

pop os also puts a thick border around that active window which makes it much easier to see where you are

mackrevinack··on Not setting up Find My bricked my MacBook
i have one of these and the smaller btr3 as well. i really love that you can use them while theyre recharging as well
mackrevinack··on Most demographers now predict that human population will plateau
a lot of people say things like "ive always wanted kids". seems kind of selfish as well. just pick any of the cliche things, passing on your genes etc, its all selfish in a way
mackrevinack··on Raspberry Pi 5
i have a raspberry pi zero wifi thats running syncthing and has a few of my syncthing folders/nodes on it. i already have a NAS that acts as the always-on node for all my syncthing folders, but if that is ever down for maintenance or whatever then the pi zero is sort of a backup that will keep syncthing things

i have another running kodi so i can access jellyfin that's on my NAS

pi-hole for network wide ad blocking

currently setting up one to act as a storage location for the restic backups from my NAS instead of having to store them with some storage provider like backblaze. i will be installing tailscale on it as well so i can leave it in a friends house and hopefully be able to reconnect to it even if they move house in the future

mackrevinack··on Text editing on mobile: the invisible problem
have you tried florisboard? i would probably use that as my main keyboard but the way it doesn't add a space after words when you swipe something kind of bugs me, especially after getting so used to it with other keyboards
mackrevinack··on Text editing on mobile: the invisible problem
all these years ive been typing in a letter A where i want to paste something, then double tapping the A to highlight it and then selecting paste :/
mackrevinack··on TikTok fined €345M for breaking EU data law on children’s accounts
"a system that cannot be controlled, censored"

sounds like the Safe Network! too bad it will never be finished in our lifetimes

mackrevinack··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
but if they added usb3 now then there would be nothing left for next year's iteration!
mackrevinack··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
im also wondering if theyll including a charger with the phone this time? their excuse for removing it was that most people had a charger already so it was better for the environment not to include one, but most iphone users only have lightning chargers
mackrevinack··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
there was nothing wrong with apple maps, you were just holding it wrong
mackrevinack··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
most manufacturers gimp their smaller phones so its not surprising that the larger versions sell more
mackrevinack··on Microsoft has not stopped forcing Edge on Windows 11 users
they have to get those bing numbers up somehow!
mackrevinack··on Microsoft has not stopped forcing Edge on Windows 11 users
personally i would recommend zorin os before ubuntu since it has a similar desktop layout to windows or if someone doesnt care about that then pop os is decent as well
