linux us made in the US? An open source OS, with collaborators from all over the world initially started by a finnish student and still actively the main orchestrator of it, linux torvalds. Not to mention the thousand distros derived from it.

PS: take this post as an opportunity to educate yourself rather than downvoting it.

macns··on Superlogical
Interesting, which OS are you using?

If linux, can you name 1-2 advantages the desktop has over the terminal?

macns··on DeepSeek Open Infra: Open-Sourcing 5 AI Repos in 5 Days
> Why? Because every line shared becomes collective momentum that accelerates the journey.

Truly admireable on their part and a great paradigm for others. Reasons for this doesn't really matter to me but I can't help but wonder if somehow they were obliged or otherwise indebted to follow this route.

macns··on Snap updates happen without user consent
what? can you be more specific? I'm using debian as my daily desktop and firefox and I've never ever had issues with anything, especially the web browser. I'm also staying away from fancy new things like snap. I've always managed to get everything I wanted either using apt or dpkg.

Can you please give an example of an application you needed available only as a snap?

macns··on Signal TLS Proxy
Why do I need Docker for such a simple task? From their blog:

> The proxy is extremely lightweight. An inexpensive and tiny VPS can easily handle hundreds of concurrent users. Here’s how to make it work:

    SSH into the server.
Install Docker, Docker Compose, and git:
I'm sorry but installing Docker on a tiny VPS last time I checked wasn't any light at all.
macns··on American Data Privacy and Protection Act
Maybe I'm too romantic, but I'd like to see an american GDPR (not saying that the eu name or the bill itself is better), and then an Asian and so on till we have one global GDPR protecting all consumer data.

macns··on The UNIX Programming Environment (1984)
I can confirm sdf.org doesn't exist using Firefox but shows ok with Chromium.

On my debian pc. Probably a firefox bug? Oh, wait.. The second time I tried sdf.org it showed up correctly, so I'm guessing it's a temporary DNS name resolution where it fails on the first attempt.. Doesn't make sense!

macns··on I regret my website redesign
Most commenters think of this as an honest/dishonest situation on behalf of the agency. A different approach (and the one I'm reading it as) is that 'Isaac' operates as a seller that likes to make 100k per customer or project in any given time.

Not committing to each project, or actually listening, when the customer complains Isaac makes a few adjustments and continues business as usual.

He only cares about that 100k in a few month's time for a project. So now that he got only half of it he probably thinks he did the client a favor.

EDIT: the product is a life-saver for servers, kudos to the developer(s)

macns··on How to waste time and overcomplicate things
Completely off-topic, but the first thing that came to mind reading this title was Microsoft. I dare say that this one company is dragging all humanity behind in technological progress. You can't imagine how many people take hours performing simple tasks that should not last more than a few minutes. I see it every day: "Office" applications, new but slow [asf] laptops and many others. Those machines are supposed to get things done, but instead they end up being an excuse for miserable people.

I hate talking politics but it angers me so much I just can't get over it. The money-capital system supposed to drive innovation is exploited by big corp just to make more money, dominate markets, or just make people feel safe doing almost absolutely nothing wasting time and getting payed for it.

A sad world.

macns··on What the world will be like in a hundred years (1922)
"Cautious feminist" describes himself as:

But it is unlikely that women will have an achieved equality with men. Cautious feminists such as myself realize that things go slowly and that a brief hundred years will not wipe out the effects on women of 30,000 years of slavery.

He's definitely on point 100 years later.

macns··on Facebook exec blames society for COVID misinformation
Adding to your comment: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/oct/05/facebook-...

Everyone should be reminded of Frances Haugen's testimony. Two months after, it's like everyone has forgotten so a Facebook exec can blame it on society.

macns··on The future is in symmetrical, high-speed internet speeds
Some of my business customers pay for 50/50mbps fiber to the building (dedicated) line for 500€/month. 100/100mbps costs about 800/month.

Residential broadband excluding Athens is mostly down to 50/5mbps and in many suburbs in cities (e.g. Khania, Crete) don't even get more than 1mbps upload.

Yet we have politicians and commercials all day showing how '5G' will change our lives. It's a joke.

macns··on GDPR guide for developers
>100% of our customers would not accept the costs of strictly follow this requirements.

This seems to apply in pre-GDPR codebases which I'm not sure this guide has taken into account. It probably is a lot less costly to architect an application from scratch, therefore easier to justify to a customer.

macns··on VSCode silently opts you in to data collection
Even though we do not pass the telemetry build flags (and go out of our way to cripple the baked-in telemetry), Microsoft will still track usage by default. After installing VSCodium, you must manually disable telemetry in your settings file to stop it from sending tracking data to Microsoft.

The instructions here and here help with disabling telemetry.
