madis··on Normalising Layoffs/Firing
Correct and exactly how it is supposed to work. What do you expect a business owner to do when the job of a worker is not profitable / necessary any more? Pay him forever out of their own pocket, taking a loss? If you've ever hired qualified personnel, you know how hard it is to find good people. No good business owner would fire a good employee for a whim. They'd keep them as long as possible (even when temporarily there's no work)

Other thing is if it's easy to re-hire when there is profitable work again. This happens where there's much more offer (of workers) than demand. For example jobs with low cualification.

So, get rid of manipulating the money supply and economy and the rest will sort itself out.

madis··on Objective-S: architecture-oriented language based on Smalltalk and Objective-C
We already have LISP. Every once in a while someone invents a new language to solve some old problem, and as the new language evolves, it becomes closer and closer to LISP.
madis··on We need more boutique search engines
Why say boutique? Why not specialized or small or purpose-built or targeted? Engggrish, you speak it?
madis··on Lite XL: A lightweight text editor written in Lua
Why?
madis··on Practical Front-End Architecture
Finally! You've done it! All the other front end architectures Are meant to be non-practical. Say what's special your solution in the title. Avoid using empty words. Less nose, more signal
madis··on Structural pattern matching in Python 3.10
Wtf is non-structural pattern matching? Pattern ~ structure. It's like saying eruptive explosion.

Stop trying to look more important and smart by using more (unnecessary) words.

madis··on Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity'
How about building more nuclear electric stations? The nuclear energy production hasn't increased in the US for past 30 years, while oil and gas have exploded. Retards. Saame thing in EU - closing down the plants in Germany and Spain
madis··on El Salvador makes Bitcoin legal tender
You don't seem to understand bitcoin. You're talking about cashing out. Why would anyone cash out from bitcoin? Ok, you get some dollars. What do you do with them? They lose >10% yearly, whereas BTC has gained >200% yearly over the past 10 years.

Instead you hold it. And if you need money you borrow against it.

Likely the poorer people won't be able to save & hold much bitcoin at least in the beginning. But the government can keep their reserves (and pension funds for example) in BTC and thus benefit everybody.

madis··on M1racles: An Apple M1 covert channel vulnerability
Why would you spend money on crappy and locked down hardware that can't be fixed. A computer that you don't own but basically rent. Get a Lenovo Thinkpad and join the light side, you'll be amazed!
madis··on Sublime Text 4

madis··on Tesla no longer accepts Bitcoin due to climate impact
...they might have seen... - Enggrish
madis··on Why the United States has the best research universities
It doesn't
madis··on Ray Dalio says the government could ban bitcoin
So does government money. And these uses are only a small percentage. I'd be like banning internet because it allows false news/cons/<your vice of choice>
madis··on Bill Gates Says that Bitcoin is bad For the Planet
Government money printing, wasting, power-grab and destruction via dilution and s and the pain, destruction and suffering they cause
madis··on Apple publishes human rights policy, commits to freedom of information
There are no human rights. Only privileges. Some have more, some less. The most powerful ones give and take them as they see fit and is convenient to them. It has always been so. Laws are for the masses.
madis··on Google T5 scores 88.9 on SuperGLUE Benchmark, approaching human baseline
Sssh dysgraphic. It's not an excuse.
madis··on Tasty Seaweed Reduces Cows’ Methane Emissions by 99%
Pretty sure the microbes will shortly figure out how to survive in the gut together with the red seaweed. This party won't last long
madis··on Data Engineering Cookbook
How about calling it "Book of mostly empty chapters on various topics about software engineering with slight emphasis on data engineering"?
madis··on Alan Kay on the Meaning of “Object-Oriented Programming” (2003)
Ruby to me seems to follow this description rather well. The "cells" in close vicinity are the objects in ancestor chain. If the "closest cell" - object's class - can't respond to it, next further, which is its parent, will be given chance and so on. Also you can ask object if they know how to respond with `respond_to?`

It's a bit more involved than that - modules can be included and prepended. In a sense "re-arranging the which cells are close and further". Also `method_missing` can be implemented. Beautiful in my opinion.

madis··on MacBook Pro with faster performance and new features for pros
You are funny. I like :D
madis··on MacBook Pro with faster performance and new features for pros
You are wording my exact thoughts. mid-2015 13" MBP was good balance.

They've played this thinness and flashy lights game too much too long. My new Lenovo T480S (24GB DDR4, is coming next week :) Sweet Linux with i3 tiled window manager. All the ports & productivity I can ask for.

I'm voting with my wallet and my vote doesn't go to Apple.

madis··on Ask HN: How did you transition from Mac to Linux?
I'm currently doing the same. The 2 I have my eye on are Lenovo X1 Carbon and T480s. Reason for change: frustration with Apple's loss of quality in both software and hardware AND malicious practices. Just watch couple videos from Louis Rossmann and you'll get the idea.

What I'm doing to smoothen the transition is that I started doing my personal coding in VM (VMWare Fusion), full-screening ElementaryOS. That is to get everything set up and more into muscle-memory. Client work will still be done on MBP.

Then I'll switch my desktop over to Linux (hackintosh). After that laptop.
