If this is true, then the entire thread branch here on HN is entirely wrong. What is going on??

Does "all but" always mean "nearly"? I've been conversing in English for 20 years now but this one eluded me.

I guess I am just unable to parse the words to piece together such a meaning. In my mind, there are two ways to interpret it: "this subject may be all kinds of things, but one thing it is not" (all but = everything except), or the opposite "this subject may be all kinds of things, but one thing it is for sure". And neither of these means "nearly" :(

If you're in Germany, I would not be so sure. Copyright extortion used to be a huge industry here for two decades.

mafuy··on UTF-8000: Unlimited UTF-8
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think all kinds of UTF, including 16 and 32, support arbitrary length for a single effective character. This would be because you can stack modifications as long as you like.
mafuy··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
By being the first to offer a convenient solution, and pushing it heavily with ads and subsidies, I suppose. Then economy of scale kicks in and you're set.

Just one example: Facebook is mandatory for school/university in large parts of Asia. You cannot trivially block them. They should be considered an utility.

Yup. How does that make you feel? Because for me, it was the moment when the border to not only blatantly, but also actively evil was passed.

You'll be delighted to learn that this exact reasoning had, in fact, been used by the copyright industry against (illegal) movie streaming websites. If I remember correctly, this was in Germany and was, after a relatively short time, no longer accepted by the courts.
mafuy··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
It is simply unethical, period. Knowing that a solution exists is a gigantic advantage when working on a solution. Normally, noone can abuse the knowledge fast enough to gain an advantage, but here, they could. This is fraud and as a journal, I would reject it.

No, the parent is exactly right. I've seen it countless times and I am so sick of it. The poor, poor CEO has to be evil, it is his duty.
mafuy··on Go grandmaster Shin defeats AI KataGo with a two-stone handicap
Depends on where you put the perfect play ceiling. I think each side has good points in their respective favor. There have been strong pushes by both humans and computers in improving their best play in the past few years.

A 2 stone handicap, however, does not scale linearly with strength. It becomes relatively more impactful at higher levels. For pro players, 2 stones are gigantic, and for beginner players, they make zero difference. Same for a point advantage (komi adjustment). So there might come a point where it is physically impossible for a computer to beat a top human under some handicap.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to name the source on this here, but someone very familiar with the top Go program scene explained that there is a fair chance that a perfect game has been played already. This is based on the probability of a mistake per move in relation to the number of games there were played by top programs. Hard to believe at first, but perchance it is true. The problem is, of course, that we don't know which games are perfect.

If I remember the numbers correctly, your setup seems to be wrong if you only get 1.4k e/s with 4x 3090. What network did you use?
mafuy··on Go grandmaster Shin defeats AI KataGo with a two-stone handicap
AlphaGo is a bit difficult to compare because their parallelism efficiency was abysmal. You might as well consider it a regular 8x or so GPU machine.
mafuy··on Go grandmaster Shin defeats AI KataGo with a two-stone handicap
The tree search in KataGo does not use Monte Carlo simulations at all. It is purely policy/value network based, and works insanely well indeed.

I've not looked at the specific game in question, but in general, doubling the thinking time leads to a very notable strength improvement regardless of the base level of play. The increase becomes slightly smaller at higher levels but does not really diminish, and it currently looks like the ceiling is still a bit away.

If it is "only" 4x3090 at 16s, you will definitely get a drastic playing strength boost from doubling the thinking time. This is still clearly within the interval of a linear relationship between thinking time and playing strength, i.e. elo ~ log time. The relationship, to my knowledge, becomes less clear only starting at about 10-20x the number of playouts.

In Go, we had an extensive documentary on this, based on the strange case of a man possessed by the spirit of an ancient master Go player. I'm not going to spoil the results here; it's an enjoyable series and includes many small introductory tutorials to the game.

His chain of thought has a length not beyond his nose. It's typical for dementia, and I have to see it all the time with my parent. Only the very last sentence is kept in mind, all other context is mostly gone.

I wish a reporter would ask him what question he heard and answered, because I'm sure he would be unable to correctly answer.

mafuy··on Whistleblower warns Postal Service mail ballot system has catastrophic problems
This is not the job of the postal service, but of the government. There is zero reason to outsource verification, and the postal service ought to vehemently reject this attempt to shift responsibility. Though I guess they won't, seeing as they are gleichgeschaltet.

ESL here. To me, there is a very clear distinction between these terms, which also applies in my native language: A thiefs tries to steal without you noticing, a burglar is a thief that additionally enters a building, and a robber in contrast steals while intentionally confronting you. The intention and the level of danger each of these pose is quite different.

In the case of antifa, the content and the label are congruent. They are, literally and practically, anti fascist. That's not the case for the NSDAP.
