majkinetor··on I can't believe PowerShell is good
We should but we probably wont. There is such thing in my country named something like "piercing the corporate veil", when the deeds are dimed so bad that state goes after owners, but it was never used in practice.
majkinetor··on Ask HN: Claude gets over my 5h limit today in 10 minutes?
I use it on Low or Medium as recommended. It just went nuts.
majkinetor··on I can't believe PowerShell is good
Because you are making it better for us, non MS people (its also already fully open source). I cant understand this way of thinking. Companies are not good or evil, they are abstract entities with people behind them and tones of regular users around. Besides, no fatureset will ever fit everybody, customization is a thing.
majkinetor··on I can't believe PowerShell is good
You are aware that there exist people who can want the opposite?

You can ask AI now to do it for you, you can probably find easily something somebody already did. It would have been nice if MS offered something that people can choose to install, but its far from a deal breaker like you seem to make it to be.

There is nothing to test, you want collection of aliases, that is trivial.

FWIW, they tried some things like https://github.com/PowerShell/Crescendo

majkinetor··on I can't believe PowerShell is good
Its good to hate bash specifically. The language is so terrible, low on standards, bad discovery. The only good thing about bash is it is pre installed. Its not far away from batch (.bat).
majkinetor··on I can't believe PowerShell is good
And you are wrong, who says that is the correct way. The correct way is the one that works

    tnc dns.google -t
I didn't even have to look for the alias, there is standard naming for them.

Like I said before, people who complain just didn't RTFM and got out of their comfort zone.

majkinetor··on I can't believe PowerShell is good
sal ls gci >> $PROFILE

its faster then this discussion.

majkinetor··on I can't believe PowerShell is good
Such a drama without a reason.

Its not slop for one. Take a look at repo and its practices. Its mind blowing and predates AI.

Nushell is nice, but lets not get carried away - it is decade away from pwsh, and suffers from the same things you complained, with language and semantics that are not intutive as pwsh's and not nearly as complete. Besides, so many 3rd party supports pwsh like Sql Server, VMware etc.

I agree that MS should push it way more and make Linux variant even better. The problem is that pwsh hardly surived at MS (cudos to Snover for being stuborn and worked against his position at MS to make it happen), and that needs some opinionated people working in MS who can fight this battle (I could honestly dedicate my life to this, I offer my services, for both pwsh and Windows, Microsoft!).

majkinetor··on I can't believe PowerShell is good
No. I use aliases so its as quick as with bash, but I am faster as I don't have to lookup for params due to fantastic discovery and usability features.

With longer commands, auto complete is also viable. I hate some long forms, like % vs ForEach-Object and ? vs Where-Object, its just ludicrious that someone would insisit in using full forms of those.

Things like `ps | ? name -like w*` or `1..10 | % { irm https://.../$_ }` can't really get shorter and I use them all the time

Auto complete on params is epic. Type -e and ctrl space to see all params starting with e along with their aliases. Verbosity is good thing in that case, as -ea doesn't mean much when you are new to this.

    ps -e<CTRL+SPACE>
    ErrorAction ea ErrorVariable ev
The verbose practice is not meant for interactive use, but for sharing scripts.
majkinetor··on I can't believe PowerShell is good
That is just common invalid trope. You can make scripts look shorter and more "culturally fit" than bash. Its just that people prefer more verbose variants for some rasons (I don't). There are automatic converters too. The legit reason is to make script cross platform, as that is easier with verbose form.
majkinetor··on I can't believe PowerShell is good
That is my only complaint really. Lets make it there... I beleive main offender is .net, but also main feature enabler.
majkinetor··on I can't believe PowerShell is good
Python etc are not shell languages, so ergonomy suffers. Nu is good start, but far from there
majkinetor··on I can't believe PowerShell is good
You can fix that very easily in your linux profile (make ls call gci and not native tool). Just add alias in your profile. You cant really complain about the absence of some cmdlets on linux, and they are trivially easy to get implemented (or wrap native tools).
majkinetor··on I can't believe PowerShell is good
Powershell is so good that I find it strange it didn't get to be default at least in some Linux distributins (or some proper fork/redo of it). I even used it for integrative feautures for some of my state projects serving millions of user. The fact that I have proper language, designed for shell, very efficient, not needing an IDE or anything, is quite liberating.

I use it for all kinds of stuff. Here is an example that creates MusicBrainz collection from my local audio folder, solving the browsers proof of work in between: https://github.com/majkinetor/musicbrainz-userscripts/tree/m...

If I am nitpicking, performance could be better, although MS did a lot in previous years and even that just in theory as I was never really blocked by that. But if it could be performance beast too, I would think we can stop researching new shells and just use it everyhwhere.

JSON support is amazing - you don't learn anything new like with jq, it just works. Selecting stuff is amazing, I love it more then SQL. HashTables are epic for configuration (you have a real language in it, unlike in lets say YAML).

Scripts that look horrible in bash are few lines of beautiful in pwsh.

If you didn't try it, or didn't give it a chance, you are missing out for sure.

majkinetor··on Someone behind the software
Fantastic take. I always thought so, but couldn't express it so well. After reading the first paragraph, my heart flickered. This will be the only determining thing in the age of AI - someone who shapes the things based on its own intuition and taste, based on experience. I did that a lot in my IT carier leading a bunch of projects. I care about each of them, deeply.
majkinetor··on The game industry is broken – can we fix it?
I just typed "woke games" in search and the link bellow was among first few results (and all true examples that my gamer friends complained about). For me personally it doesn't destroy the otherwise good game but other guys are more hard core and stop playing as soon as first woke moment is seen. Many of them stopped playing new games totally and get back to older ones. The Last of Us and recent WoW in particular.

https://fictionhorizon.com/games-where-woke-updates-caused-m...

The similar is true for series. Picard saved the universe many times over and random female gives him lectures and dominates entire series...

majkinetor··on The game industry is broken – can we fix it?
Too many woke themed games in recent years. I know bunch off man who refuse to play such games and never will, no matter how good those otherwise are. Internet is full of it.
majkinetor··on GLP-1 may slow biological aging
Have u maybe tried SPM from fish oil?
majkinetor··on The history of development of Norton Commander (2011)
Of course. How can you even ask that.
majkinetor··on The history of development of Norton Commander (2011)
I suggest its clone, Double Commander. Does everything as TC, supports its plugins and is cross platform and open source. I was very active in TC community until I switched to DC.
majkinetor··on The gap in shared understanding of LLM capability is widening
It will be comparable once the AI is self sustainable and self reproducible (no big data centers behind it). Then it will have to deal with limited resources to run itself like humans do. In that scenario it will no longer have entire world of knowledge at its hands - options will be to cut anything not usable imediately or to communicate with big AI in the cloud.
majkinetor··on The gap in shared understanding of LLM capability is widening
It can be both and it is.
majkinetor··on The gap in shared understanding of LLM capability is widening
There is every reason to think this. Its about available quality data. The data that was easiest to fetch was already there, then we got some more data by asking experts to create datasets for post training. Once this is over, we will get to the outer world that didn't get to hoard it for bots to take it. This will certainly change. Put on a smart glasses and record what you do to fix a pipe. In 3-5 years, rinse and repeat.
majkinetor··on How did Rosalind Franklin miss the helix in her iconic DNA image? She didn't
Pauling would certainly figure out that too before Watson and Crick but his passport was taken by USA gov so he couldn't attend the conference where X-Ray picture was shown. That would almost certainly win him third Nobel Prize.
majkinetor··on Which Diet Is Best to Lower Liver Fat and Improve Insulin Sensitivity?
I do exactly that for a decade. This is not for discussion, we know this. Stop eating carbs 2 weeks and your cells will adapt. There is no such thing as carbohydrate deficiency or we would not be able to surive to this age.

Most of the carby foods are typically nutrient shit. Fiber like psylium exluded and somewhat resistant starch. You better try to avoid all else as your life depends on it.

If you are really serious athlete, do whatever you want honestly. 99.9999999 people are not. Your muscles are sugar pumps in that case (not the teeth though).

> I wonder why they are always the ones woefully less fit than the serious athlete acquaintances.

Thats because you look at the wrong thing. Seriously fit people in my experience are seriously not that fit when they give me their blood tests.

majkinetor··on Which Diet Is Best to Lower Liver Fat and Improve Insulin Sensitivity?
The entirety of scientific evidence is so overwhealming at this point, that unless you are genetic freak, it certainly works. We know biological mechanisms and environmental circumestances regarding this. At this point, if you don't beleive in low carb (not keto), you are anti-science.
majkinetor··on Which Diet Is Best to Lower Liver Fat and Improve Insulin Sensitivity?
It doesn't look so, also, it was not keto diet, but lowcarb.
majkinetor··on Jevmem – automatic project memory for Claude Code, built on Jev
AI readme should be a starting point. I typically remove at least 50% of the details (without any particular skill use, it goes into extremes like "x clears the edit" and writes a related wall of text in the middle of the important explanation).
majkinetor··on Jevmem – automatic project memory for Claude Code, built on Jev
Is it outdated? Its an avenue already visited, tried and abandoned, so valuable info regarding architectural decisions.
majkinetor··on What happened to the Snowden archive
In current age there is no reason for Snowden not to do this:

1. Use all variants of local AI to categorize documents and remove PII. Different AI's can be used to doublecheck results

2. Publish output as a torrent

Then wider community can find whatever patterns exist there.
