malablaster··on Tesla Roadster
Fair pushback in this thread. Watching the Roadster reveal I saw his boyish enthusiasm and gave it too much weight in judging his character; a heavy dose of recency bias thrown in. I’m not well versed on his actions but those should be how we judge him.
malablaster··on Tesla Roadster
I don’t see Musk as a nefarious actor; more of a nerd — albeit a visionary one — who is socially awkward but got unfathomably rich and powerful.
malablaster··on Google Maps renames "Lake Ontario" to "Lake America" faster than US Government
If people have largely forgotten or forgiven Nazi sympathizing companies, what makes you think they’ll remember and boycott companies who renamed a map?
malablaster··on Google Externalised the Cost of Renaming Gmail
Who doesn’t build a way to change email addresses into their product?!
malablaster··on StationeryObject
Some of them are really beautiful.
malablaster··on Himalayas bare and rocky after reduced winter snowfall, scientists warn
I’m disappointed at the lack of before/after photos in that article. My ape brain would love them.
malablaster··on Is moderate drinking healthy? Scientists say the idea is outdated
You’d be hard pressed to convince me to consume a class 1 carcinogen in moderation for health benefits.
malablaster··on Show HN: I built a knife steel comparison tool
When I’m buying a new knife I have a temporary interest in steels. For those times I might want something that guides me through whether there’s a steel that is better for my use case than Magnacut. Last time I was into researching steels I made my own spreadsheet.
malablaster··on Directory of MCP Servers
I agree. There’s no need to centralize this list.
malablaster··on Show HN: I built a knife steel comparison tool
The graph you chose feels useless to me. It seems like you built this without a target use case, neither practical nor academic.
malablaster··on Just redesigned my personal site with a TTY-style interface
I did this like 15 years ago for my personal site too! Looks great.
malablaster··on Why don't we have personalized search engines?
I’ve been paying for Kagi search engine (a thing I never thought I’d pay for) for many months and it has a lot of what you’re asking for.
malablaster··on Multivitamin does not improve longevity
> by pooling data from 3 large cohorts, we could explore heterogeneity across key population subgroups, including understudied sociodemographic subgroups, which was identified as a research gap in the 2022 USPSTF review.3 In stratified analyses, we found no evidence of effect modification by race and ethnicity, education, or diet quality.
malablaster··on Patagonia gave its staff 3 days to decide to relocate or quit
If they don’t want them anymore why not just lay them off? Why this beating around the bush, slimy bullshit?
malablaster··on The new croissant taking Paris by storm
I don’t know what makes an inanimate object ugly, but the crookie captures it.
malablaster··on Latency numbers every programmer should know
reading sideways sucks
malablaster··on Inside the proton, the ‘most complicated thing you could possibly imagine’
Summary:

“The proton is an incredibly complex particle that physicists are still working to fully understand. Experiments over decades have revealed that the proton is not just three quarks, but contains a sea of transient gluons and quark-antiquark pairs. The HERA accelerator provided evidence of this "gluon dandelion" structure by detecting low-momentum quarks and antiquarks emerging from gluon splitting. Most recently, machine learning analysis of thousands of proton snapshots found traces of heavy charm quarks within the proton, suggesting its makeup is a quantum mixture of different quark states. Future experiments like the Electron-Ion Collider aim to map out the spins and 3D structure of quarks and gluons inside the proton.

One interesting finding highlighted is the recent discovery, through machine learning analysis of past proton data, that the proton contains traces of heavy charm quarks, implying its composition involves different quark combinations in a quantum superposition. This suggests the proton's makeup is more complex than previously understood.”

malablaster··on Amelia Didn't Know Radio (1993)
Summary:

“Amelia Earhart went missing in 1937 during her attempted circumnavigation of the globe when she failed to find Howland Island, as intended radio navigation assistance from the Itasca ship was compromised by issues with her plane's radio equipment. Specifically, Earhart had mistakenly designated 7.5 megacycles as the Itasca's beacon frequency, which was too high for her plane's direction finder to get a bearing from. This prevented her from coordinating with the Itasca. Intriguingly, radio signals later intercepted by stations in the Pacific showed Earhart's plane was still operational for hours after she went missing, suggesting she survived the initial landing but could not be reached due to radio problems. Unfortunately, no definitive evidence of her final fate has ever been discovered.”

malablaster··on Over the edge: The use of design tactics to undermine browser choice
Not exactly an impartial source coming from their competitor who is also almost fully funded by their other competitor.
malablaster··on Prefer table driven tests (2019)
I also can’t stand when I want to debug a single table test with VSCode debugger+dlv and I have to comment out hundreds of lines of table tests.
malablaster··on Fly through your shell history
I find it annoying that the tl;dr summarizes two sentences.
malablaster··on Thoughts on PostgreSQL in 2024
“The document discusses where PostgreSQL is heading in 2024 and beyond. It focuses on three key areas: availability, performance, and developer features. For availability, the author sees logical replication and reducing downtime for upgrades and maintenance as important goals. Performance improvements may come from asynchronous I/O, parallel recovery, and maximizing resource usage on large instances. On developer features, priorities include supporting more of the SQL/JSON standard and making migration from other databases easier. The author also notes opportunities around PostgreSQL extensions, community building, mentorship, and diversity/inclusion. Overall, the community is actively working to improve PostgreSQL in many dimensions.” –Kagi summarizer.
malablaster··on Kagi – Sourcing from Brave Search, improved image search, and new Safari ext
I’ll make sure I’m using the 2.0 version. They released a separate app in the app store for 2.0 (for some reason) and increased the confusion by naming it the same as the previous version!
malablaster··on Kagi – Sourcing from Brave Search, improved image search, and new Safari ext
The Kagi Safari extension for iOS is driving me crazy. Half the time it sends my searches to the default search engine. So annoying after paying for a year of Kagi.
malablaster··on The great cousin decline
> the world had gone dumb.

Source?

malablaster··on Rolex fined $100M for preventing its watches being sold online
Unless there’s some evidence that the legal system (which isn’t responsible for homelessness) is enforcing business rules instead of helping starving, cold children… then that’s a false dichotomy.
malablaster··on Ask HN: How have you engineered the shit out of your home's front entrance?
Cool. I was hoping to get some interesting ideas around inside the front entrance. Well engineered solutions to shoes, coats, accessories, etc.
malablaster··on Ask HN: What did you buy or considering buying this Black Friday?
Trail running shoes.
malablaster··on Orthodox Privilege (2020)
There something true about it though. People see the world through “my tribe, not my tribe”. Left vs right. Islam vs non-Islam. West vs non-west. Sunni vs Shia. etc.
malablaster··on Use Timestamps
Udemy is really annoying for this. They intentionally hide the release date of courses.
