maloney··on Alex Honnold: The Soloist VR
I would give yourself more credit, I highly doubt he would be able to flash a v11, I don't think he boulders much harder than v12.

Nice work by the way, Font is the best!

maloney··on I'm a Coffee Roaster: Here's What You're Doing Wrong That's Ruining Your Coffee
Yes! Water is the main ingredient, with that said tap water might be fine if you like the taste of your tap water. If the tap water tastes bad your coffee will not be as good as it could be.
maloney··on The best way to exercise self-control is not to exercise it at all
You are going to need some sources. You are confusing ketosis with ketoacidosis

How are your iron/ferritin levels? Low iron causes fatigue
maloney··on You don’t want a child prodigy
That goes counter to what this article is saying with the whole "Roger Dad" approach. He gives many examples where people took the general approach to start, specialized late and rose to the top.
maloney··on Are robots better baristas? Berkeley’s Bbox café thinks so
Every good coffee shop does this.
maloney··on How Discord Handles Two and Half Million Concurrent Voice Users Using WebRTC

maloney··on Elon Musk gives first glimpse inside Tesla Model 3 production line
I don't buy this, the United States is still the second largest manufacturing country in the world.
maloney··on Utah governor signs law legalizing 'free-range parenting'
Yeah, see Bill of Rights.
maloney··on Utah governor signs law legalizing 'free-range parenting'
There is a difference between a new born and a 7 month old. The latter is extremly unlikly of suffocating on a blanket or a stuffed animal and calling CPS in this case is abhorrent. There is certinaly a step before you call someone to take there kid away
maloney··on Was there ever really a “sugar conspiracy”?
Fructose is metabolized almost entirly by the liver which might make it better for blood sugar levels but it’s signifacantly worse on the liver.
maloney··on Go 1.10 Release Notes
I mean, the project lead wanted a feature and then implemented the feature, clearly it had value to him.
maloney··on Type 2 diabetes can be reversed with a low-calorie diet
It would only be a problem if you took insulin and then did not eat. Given that type two diabetics cell’s are stuffed full of sugar from insulin resitance, not eating or eating less can only help.
maloney··on Exercise Alters Our Microbiome
This is a pretty hardline approach.

Most people allow for coffee and tea without sugar or cream.

If there are no calories you're not breaking a fast in my opinion.

BCAA's do have calories so I would say they would break a fast though.

maloney··on Sugar alters hormones and metabolism, sets stage for obesity and diabetes
"Low carb and high fat: The fat goes to your fat cells (that is, whatever fat you don't burn for fuel immediately after eating), but since your insulin is low the fat is readily burned off relatively soon."

- The fat you eat does not have to be stored as fat, the raised insulin levels are necessary for the body to store energy as fat.

"Low fat and high carb: The carbs cause an insulin spike, and insulin inhibits fat burning, BUT since you haven't stuffed much fat into your fat cells, there isn't much to burn off when your insulin eventually comes back down. You need to be relatively insulin sensitive, so that your insulin level does come back down. Even if you're insulin resistant, this diet might still work if you eat only a tiny amount of fat."

- Carbs can be converted to fat via lipogenesis.

maloney··on Overweight and obesity are linked to cancer
Keto is a high fat diet not a high protien diet. Replace "keto" with "Atkin's" and I have no issue with your comment, in fact i would agree.
maloney··on How Taser inserts itself into investigations involving its own weapons
"why would you risk killing someone for that"

I think that's the main point of the article. Taser markets these weapons as non-lethal, going to great lengths to make sure investigations point the blame somewhere else when a death occurs.

Police don't treat these weapons as lethal, which is clearly not true.

maloney··on Pushing the trend of intermittent fasting for weight loss
He sites several studies including the Minnesota Starvation Experiment[0]. It's pretty simple, if the body gets some calories but not enough, your metabolism is lowered and you have less energy along with a host of other symptoms. This also explains why this is a terrible dieting strategy, once your metabolism is lowered you regain the weight quite fast once you start eating more.

maloney··on Pushing the trend of intermittent fasting for weight loss
Yes, eating too much food can cause weight gain. That is also the simplest and least helpful view that exists. It certainly does not explain how some people can gain weight with a calorie deficit and some people can loose weight on a calorie surplus.

By the way "skipping meals" (aka fasting) is exactly what Dr. Fung recommends to lose weight. Fasting drops your insulin levels and gives your body a chance to burn its stored fats.

maloney··on Pushing the trend of intermittent fasting for weight loss
Spoken like someone who knows literally nothing on the subject.
maloney··on Pushing the trend of intermittent fasting for weight loss
Are you talking about Obesity Code? I find it to be quite convincing, he uses many studies to debunk the calories in calories out paradigm and provides ample evidence that obesity is a hormonal problem.
maloney··on Alex Honnold Scales El Capitan Without Ropes, and the Climbing World Reels
The nose has only been free climbed by 5 people.

Context is pretty important when talking about aid vs free vs solo

maloney··on Many famous scientists have something in common: they didn’t work long hours
Really? Lifting more weight, running a faster mile or losing weight are just as easy to measure.
maloney··on Three Months of Go, from a Haskeller’s perspective (2016)
etcd is also used quite a bit for service discovery, but it's written in Go too :)
maloney··on To fix L.A.'s traffic, we need tolls
This is double speak, charging someone to use something is not a tax.

The fee to ride the bus/train is not called a tax, why would this be any different?

Roads need to stop being subsidized, it's the only thing that's going to give mass transit a chance to actually compete.

maloney··on Music's weird cassette-tape revival is paying off
I don't think that is true, given that digital will always be samples of the original. I worked at a mastering studio that had a laser record player, best sound I have heard.
maloney··on The worrying implications of China's social-credit project

4MB is an incredible amount of Javascript. All of underscore is less than 6kb, jQuery is less than 70kb. Both of those libs fill out the "standard" library needs of most websites.

I remap caps lock to ctrl and in Vim I use "jk" for esc in insert mode. Caps lock to ctrl is crazy useful outside of Vim since every other application has some basic support for Emacs bindings.
maloney··on Show HN: Mest – Place to talk with those you disagree with
Your bundle.js file is 4.4MB and took 30 seconds to load (given several attempts). I would consider getting that under control, at the very least gzip the file.
