manuelmagic··on Ask HN: Have your search results gotten worse recently?
DDG started to ignore the country preference (the slide button) I set.

I keep it in the off position, that should mean "all countries" but it still shows me results in Italian language, even if I search in English.

Google started doing that years ago, and it's quite annoying since I usually want international results.

manuelmagic··on Ask HN: Who Uses Raspberry Pi Desktop for PC and Mac?
I'm genuinely curious about who uses the Raspberry Pi distro on a x86 computer.

Does it exist only related to the development of the Raspberry Pi OS for aarch64 and armhf or there are people out there that choose Raspberry Pi Desktop as their main distro for their PC/Mac?

manuelmagic··on The new Polaroid I-2 instant camera
IMHO it's a feature that instant photography users are not interested at all.
manuelmagic··on The new Polaroid I-2 instant camera
It's still not clear if the lens is made of glass like the SX-70 or the SLR-680.
manuelmagic··on micro – A Modern Alternative to nano
I have tens of files open in ST right now and it's using 16 MB of RAM. I'd suggest some tests without the plugins you are describing.
manuelmagic··on Polaroid Now Makes Speakers and Operates a Streaming Music Service
Despite common knowledge you should not shake a Polaroid picture while it's developing.

It's a heritage from the pack film era during the 60s.

manuelmagic··on Polaroid Now Makes Speakers and Operates a Streaming Music Service
IMHO it’s a bad idea.

Market for bluetooth speakers and music streaming apps is saturated.

Their users base didn’t ask for this and they are unimpressed at best or even hangry.

The Polaroid company of today is a small company. I understand they are trying to diversifying their business and monetize their worthy brand but they are probably just wasting resources and damaging their brand: Polaroid should be all about instant photography not branding some lifestyle electronics from some OEM in China.

They are repeating errors from the past, they already failed two times trying this move.

manuelmagic··on Polaroid Now Makes Speakers and Operates a Streaming Music Service
Probably the latter
manuelmagic··on The state of external retina displays
When talking about hi-end monitor I'm always surprised that nearly nobody list Eizo monitors among the choices.

manuelmagic··on TSA’s “See cash, seize cash” policy
I think it's not the main point discussed here...
manuelmagic··on Amazon says it’s permanently banned 600 Chinese brands for review fraud
I personally don't think that's fair and more importantly it doesn't solve the problem. You will pay less, true, but you still get a used or poor object. At least to me, that's not appealing at all.
manuelmagic··on Life Before Unicode
The second note at the bottom of the page says: "That hardware was too outdated to keep producing in any case, and couldn’t complete in a free market."

So I'd say no, there aren't any large Soviet hardware manufacturers anymore.

manuelmagic··on The Era of Cheap Natural Gas Ends as Prices Surge by 1000%
If oil prices go up then cracking is a bargain again, so... it's not the solution towards renewables.
manuelmagic··on Operating Systems: Timeline and Family Tree
You can write to the author and make a suggestion, like I did.
manuelmagic··on Operating Systems: Timeline and Family Tree
I already sent to eylenburg a small suggestion: after 2016 MacOS X is called macOS.
manuelmagic··on Apple's plan to “think different” about encryption opens a backdoor to your life
I'm using since many years HERE Maps https://wego.here.com/
manuelmagic··on Sublime Text 4
No, .json file as always. Honestly, I like it this way: it is easier to search for parameters and the comments over them explain quickly what each parameter does and how it can be changed.
manuelmagic··on Sublime Text 4
I changed the tabs angles, the theme, the colors scheme and the caret blinking back to look identical to ST3.
manuelmagic··on Sublime Text 4
Could the portable version do the trick?
manuelmagic··on Show HN: Apply for a job through SSH, $ ssh jobs.hackclub.com
Hi, I'm a not native English speaker. I can't understand what do you mean with the word "MUD". Can you explain it for me? Thank you.
manuelmagic··on The Unix Magic Poster
What is the meaning of the Unix Feuds and Unix Views posters? The Unix Magic is pretty straightforward but the other two are - at least to me - quite obscure.
manuelmagic··on Apache OpenMeetings – Video chat, messaging, white board, doc editing and more
You should try LibreOffice
manuelmagic··on Why Credit Card Fraud Is Still a Thing
I'm sorry to see how many people here on HN are commenting debit/credit card systems without really knowing the topic, spreading false notions, clichés, absolute conclusions from personal anecdotes or simply by stating easy stereotypes towards banks and financial institutions.

I'm usually learning a lot from HN but I'm sad to say this discussion is full with low quality contents.

manuelmagic··on Why Credit Card Fraud Is Still a Thing
That's an oversimplification that's simply not true everywhere in the world.
manuelmagic··on Why Credit Card Fraud Is Still a Thing
2FA doesn't always ask for a PIN, depending on some fingerprinting the payment can be processed without further checks.
manuelmagic··on Why Credit Card Fraud Is Still a Thing
Same in Italy, with old swipe cards you have to show an ID; some merchandiser don't ask but they should.

Anyway, this mostly faded away since most of new cards are chip&pin and, more importantly, in Italy most of the people use debit cards (Bancomat is the common debit circuit here) or... cash :-\

manuelmagic··on Why Credit Card Fraud Is Still a Thing
Are you claiming that contactless payment are unencrypted?
manuelmagic··on Why Credit Card Fraud Is Still a Thing
There are frauds that happen during the shipping. Or there could be a malware on the computer. Why do you assume that the bank is at fault?
manuelmagic··on Garmin outage official statement
No mention about the ransomware.

Also no informations about flygarmin.com.

They do confirm that “inReach SOS and messaging remain fully functional and are not impacted by the outage“ though.

Of course, also no mention about when the service will be restored.

manuelmagic··on De-Googling: My Progress
I'm using Here Maps[1] since 2013, both on PC and mobile.
