marai2··on Triplet of 'ghostly' galaxies hints at what dark matter is and isn't
Thank you for this dark-matter-theories-in a nutshell comment! I learned a lot!
marai2··on A History of Curves and Surfaces in Computer Aided Geometric Design [pdf]
Freya Holmér's "Why you can't multiply vectors?" was also a very nicely presented talk on a number of linear algebra topics.
marai2··on 15-year search for a band that charted once and vanished
For me it was a Bjork song but it was in Icelandic. I had heard it around 2010ish and didn't have the song. Because it was in Icelandic and I didn't know the name of the track I couldn't figure out how to find it - because I had streamed through all of Biorks albums on one of these streaming services and it wasn't on any of them. I don't know how similar Icelandic is to other Nordic/Scandinavian languages so maybe a speaker of these languages would have been able to identify the lyrics, but I couldn't even identify a single word from memory that I could use to search for the lyrics.

After more than a decade The Guardian had an article on Bjork and mentioned something about her fan club on Reddit. So I thought I would ask there.

That hit the jackpot, someone mentioned she had an earlier band called Tappi Tíkarrass (from 1981-1983) and it was a song they performed on some TV show. https://youtu.be/nkuXOtFLMZw

Thank you for your valuable comment! As an autodidact I do buy books on various fields that interest me and I'm always looking for comments such as yours that can give me more information about the main texts in that field and what they cover well or what another book covers better. So this is very helpful!

marai2··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026)
Thanks for all your efforts on pikuma.com, huge fan here.

Can you share what kind of ideas you're mulling for the direction of the site?

marai2··on The time I didn't meet Jeffrey Epstein
I had no idea about any of this! Thank you for sharing this!
marai2··on Ardour 9.0
A light weight journaling of your learnings as you go along would probably be real beneficial to many (such as myself who has zero knowledge on the subject of DAWs and creating music effects for games). And since you said it’s very challenging maybe writing about it in small bite-sized learnings might make the process easier? Going from “I must learn all this stuff!!” to “let’s see what audio gems we pick up in our adventure today”.
marai2··on Adobe Animate (formerly Flash) will be discontinued on March 1st
Come on, somebody at Adobe spill the beans. Who was responsible for this debacle?
marai2··on Lessons learned shipping 500 units of my first hardware product
Since you’re already done creating your hardware product instead of thinking of a new product to follow up with, I would suggest a new business model: there are probably a non-zero number of people on HN that have a vision about making a hardware product. You can offer your services so the don’t have to learn all these lessons the hard way!
marai2··on Ask HN: Is there anyone here who still uses slide rules?
I agree. In fact you should make a (YouTube?) video showing the slide rule and how to use it and your grandfather’s history to preserve this bit of history for your family and family’s future descendants.

marai2··on Ask HN: End of Year Book Recommendations
quite an interesting list of books for 2025. I’ll have to get some of these to read. Especially the Information theory one above and the one you mentioned in your review.
marai2··on Ask HN: End of Year Book Recommendations
1. Why Machines Learn - Anil Ananthaswamy

Fantastic exposition of machine learning. The author does an amazing job of bringing a technical subject down to an easily readable level.

2. The Joy of Abstraction - Eugenia Cheng

Similar to the above review. I never thought Category Theory could be made so easily readable!

3. A Little History of Philosophy - Nigel Warburton

Small, compact book. A quick interesting jaunnt through the history of philosophy. Entertaining and educational!

marai2··on No more O'Reilly subscriptions for me
Same with the Stanford university bookstore. Was one of the better bookstores in the Bayarea. Used to have a whole room of technical, science, math books. It too is a shadow of its former self. So sad.
marai2··on OMSCS Open Courseware
One course per semester might be doable? Not sure how frequently the assignments are due because you could probably carve out some time over the weekends.
marai2··on Calculus for Mathematicians, Computer Scientists, and Physicists [pdf]
i bought a compilers book that was an Indian edition. The paper and print quality was so bad (like smudgy) that I could not read it and I didn’t think I was particularly picky about this. Not sure if I just got unlucky or if this is generally true?
marai2··on Freer Monads, More Extensible Effects (2015) [pdf]
Wow, this is so cool that you did this and this showed up right now. There was an online book (soon to be published) by Xavier Leroy on the history of control mechanisms in programming languages with the last few chapters on Effect systems.

ratfactor - you’re doing God’s work by teaching us how to tackle the demon that is the fitted sheet!
marai2··on ‘I witnessed war crimes’ in Gaza – former worker at GHF aid site [video]
BBC's Jeremy Bowen was on the Jordanian aid-dropping plane yesterday or day before. "He was told by the Jordanians that Israel did not want our crew to film outside the plane's windows while he was onboard".[1] Obviously why - then he'd be able to film the ... not decimation, but total destruction of some of the cities in Gaza that would provide evidence for the genocide.

I think if you were to write a post (or better yet a video) to demonstrate your usage of your workflow, that would be a great resource! I love working in M-x shell but your workflow sounds next level.
