markn951··on Hyperspace
I think the record for most space saved by this utility in a single run is in the hundreds of TBs now. I’ll see if I can find the toot.

Edit: maybe a bit hyperbolic of me, looks like it was 3.94TB https://mastodon.social/@WTL/116710030179809319

markn951··on Five Years of Running a Systems Reading Group at Microsoft
Speaking as a SWE manager who explicitly “mandates” (not actually mandatory but I strongly encourage following your passions and interests in an academic kind of way!) we do exist, I assume I’m not the only one :)

My team almost always can find an hour between tasks organically so I’ve never really had to push

markn951··on MacBook Neo
No Magsafe on the M1. The USB ports are actually Thunderbolt 3 but the target customer does not care about that or even knows what Thunderbolt is. I think the main upgrade is the A18 Pro is about 50% faster in single core and matches the M1 in multicore. Which is going to make everything feel a lot snappier for the kind of tasks they're targeting. Plus I think the $100 upgrade to double the storage space and get Touch ID is actually going to be pretty popular.
markn951··on MacBook Neo
The body, size, weight, shape of the Neo is almost exactly the same as the current Macbook Air. What are you talking about?

Jesus dude, put the AI down
markn951··on My Life Is a Lie: How a Broken Benchmark Broke America
Pretty sure this is AI written or at least assisted. “It’s not just X, it’s Y. And the foo? It bazzed.”

Honestly hard to disagree with what the message is but I can’t really take him intellectually seriously even with an obvious premise with such lazy writing

Yes
markn951··on Ask HN: Imagine a world with 1Tb/s internet. What would change?
I feel like most use cases are more latency-bound than bandwidth-bound today. I could be wrong, maybe I'm not thinking big enough :)

Everyone responding to you earnestly without understanding the joke... lol
markn951··on Why Co–Star Uses Haskell
Well... they're not really "making" an astrology product. They're an engineer "making" an application backend. It's almost kind of irrelevant what it's being used for in this context (a relatively technical discussion on the merits of a language).
markn951··on NSA Mobile Device Best Practices
They're not automatically turning on if you're "turning them off" from Control Center. Those buttons just temporarily disable them (and state that clearly when you do so). The only way to actually turn off Wifi and Bluetooth is to go into Settings and turn them off there.
markn951··on Quad9 and Sony Music: German Injunction Status
Except in the case of deciding to exclude EDNS Client Subnet, which in my experience completely borks CDNs. Which is why I switched to Quad9 in the first place.
markn951··on Apple shut down my iCloud account for five days, no warning, no explanation
Welp, that is terrifying. This solidifies my conviction that the strategy when it comes to cloud services is to diversify. As much as is tolerable.

markn951··on Virginia lawmakers pass marijuana legalization bills
Only a matter of time before every state in the union follows suit, like gay marriage last decade. Then we get to work freeing everyone jailed for this.
markn951··on Nikon Is ending 70 years of camera production in Japan
Kodak made scientific and technical optics and imaging equipment too, for years. Not to mention film for just about everything. They've made X-ray machines and other medical imaging devices. They had huge chemical plants and research facilities that didn't just make photographic chemicals. They even made hand grenades during WWII.
markn951··on My experience as a poll worker in Pennsylvania
Here in Boston our officers were in uniform all day but they told us they drop off all the ballots out of uniform in their own personal vehicles, he surmised to be less obvious a target. I thought it was an interesting approach, perhaps not super effective but interesting.

markn951··on USB-C is still a mess
FYI, Thunderbolt 3 does not support full speed above 0.5m in length in passive cables, so instead of 40Gb/s you’re getting 20Gb/s and reduced capabilities.
markn951··on USB-C is still a mess
That’s not at all true, I charge mine with a c2c cable from my MacBook charger every single day.
markn951··on We ran the numbers, and there really is a pipeline problem in engineering hiring
I get the sentiment, but reread your first sentence. "Women are too ___ to become ___." Doesn't that read as super condescending and prescriptive? I understand it's coming from ostensibly a good place, but it's the same thing as saying "all Asians are smart and good at math." It doesn't matter if the stereotype/prejudice/whatever you call it is "positive", it's still generalization, speaking for a group instead of letting them speak for themselves, and it's the wrong way to approach these things.

You're making assumptions about what "women" are good at or what "women" want or what "they" should do, when the fact is there is no such homogeneous category for you to speak about. Sure, some women are better at/enjoy more face-to-face type work. Some women are better at/enjoy programming/heads-down type work. A comic book artist probably spends as much time doing heads-down work as a programmer, but would you say female comic book artists should try doing some other career instead?
