martheen··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
In Windows, by default, Microsoft tools put projects in ~/source/repos, which OneDrive, in turn, by default won't touch so they'll be lost if the SSD fail and they're not in git.

However, OneDrive doesn't seem to even know how to handle source files (it doesn't even attempt to honor the gitignore), so rebuilding a project in folders covered by OneDrive results in flurries of temporary files being uploaded/updated to the cloud, hogging the bandwidth, with a bonus of locking files, crashing builds, or even reverting changes silently.

One would think backup tools, even if primarily for normal users are still literally made by programmers, at least consider the use case of programmers instead of just ignoring them entirely.

martheen··on Your Phone Is About to Stop Being Yours: 70 Days Until Lockdown
Pretty dead for me when they don't support the messaging app I need (yeah yeah people should use open protocol blah blah, but pretty much everyone in my country use them and I won't be able to convert them), nor transport (regular cabs can easily cost twice), and last I heard they don't even support copy paste between apps.

There isn't even any high res large touch screen KaiOS phone. I want to watch HD movies and read articles in comfort without scrolling all the time.

martheen··on Your Phone Is About to Stop Being Yours: 70 Days Until Lockdown
Once enabled, it stays enabled even after developer mode is turned back off. It's also associated to the Google account (if any) so later device purchase don't have to wait the 24 hours period
martheen··on Apple's new 'Switch to Safari' campaign details why you should ditch Chrome
I suspect that was a legacy from when they planned for iOS not supporting any third-party apps. If they want to force devs to target mobile Safari, the least they can do was to provide the desktop version on Windows.

Once apps dominate (which requires devs to have a Mac anyway to compile and debug) and turns out nobody use the Windows port, it's just a money sink.

martheen··on Apple's new 'Switch to Safari' campaign details why you should ditch Chrome
Due to App Store $99 per year compared to PlayStore one-time $25 and iPhone being unaffordable for most people in my country, there's too many niche and/or local apps I'm using in Android where they won't port to iOS.
martheen··on Will Linux phones become a viable alternative to the Android/iOS duopoly?
Have they support copy paste between apps? Since WhatsApp abandoned the platform I figured it is in life support. Almost no one use SMS in developing worlds, it's WhatsApp all the way.

martheen··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
Personally I'd just use Cloudflare Pages, unlike GitHub Pages I can let the backing repo private. Maybe OC originally started with GitHub Pages and wants some analytics and filtering with Cloudflare.
martheen··on What is the actual percentage of people for and against AI?
Companies that only produce LLMs will downsize or merge once the progress plateau, but major companies with LLM division can afford to keep spending if the bean counters figure out it do increase their market share.
martheen··on What is the actual percentage of people for and against AI?
Those "experts" works in companies that have spent years touting about LLMs solving everything while getting massive pay raise.

The general public see LLMs flailing at simple tasks, spam fake contents, and target civilians for military strikes all the while struggling to pay the bills. It also doesn't help that LLM companies PR think claiming their products to be extremely dangerous as selling point.

If I'm selling a car for civilians, I won't be touting how it would barrel through pedestrians even if technically all cars can do it.

martheen··on Goodbye Google
You're assuming that the AI created solution (virus, cold fusion, etc) won't have unknown effects either due to incompetence or malice.

martheen··on Windows 11's "special" developer edition looks like another marketing misfire
When I read the headline of the announcement article, I thought it would be in the spirit of https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dev-drive/, instead it's just advertising a series of device that most devs won't ever buy.

Devs might be bad at marketing to general public, but if the target market are devs, run the ads through them first. Even if they're in a building with no dev at all, surely one can be reached through an internal email.

martheen··on Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
Firefox with uBO on Android can handle that easily, no idea if iOS limit that
martheen··on AI Chip Architectures
If they ever figure out how to make it in any usable scale, maybe.
martheen··on 'Not acceptable': Judge orders Google to make rival app store installs easier
Android, at least those with Play Service, already have built-in scanning for APKs right now. The main problem is currently only Google can "trust" the dev signature for apps they release, so if an app or dev is in Google's naughty list, either for outright malware or for an adblocker, they're out.

At least there will be a setting for users to allow any app from any dev, which those who know about it will enable right away, and those who don't know about it have no business to use it anyway.

martheen··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
Chrome is made by an advertising company that also fund almost entirely the budget of Firefox. Even Safari is made by an advertising company. FWIW most of them have some blocking for egregious ads, so they will happily kill someone's else goose.

Personally I think the easiest would be to support uBO or at least have a built-in engine that can load filters written for uBO. Anything else is just wasting development time.

martheen··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
Search for it in the Start menu, right click uninstall. You can do the same with most other preloaded apps, or use whatever powershell incantation to do it in batch.
martheen··on Every fast write moves work somewhere else
UFS WriteBooster not only have a buffer that eventually need to be flushed, since it uses flash cells with pseudo-SLC behavior, the write amplification is even higher, to the point that they give it a special flag because using it all the time will just kill the media faster.
martheen··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
Iris Xe in 12th-gen do this, no idea since when it's added. There's still a minimum configurable shared allocation option in the BIOS, probably for legacy OS, but after booting Windows it can take up to 8 GB of the system RAM.

martheen··on Why Estonians invite strangers into their back gardens each summer
Sikh's similarly serve communal meal, langar, which invite everyone to come and eat together. As a non-Sikh, being invited to such events is such an educational experience because they're a very small minority in my country so pretty much everything I see was new to me.
martheen··on Improving GPT‑5.6 Sol in ChatGPT, expanding GPT‑5.6 Luna access for free users
Even the Philippines and Thailand are lower in per-capita usage compared to the US, most of the higher use are in Europe. Interestingly Australia & New Zealand are also pretty high, similar to Europe and far more than Asia & Africa in general, with the exception being Saudi Arabia (similar to US) and Israel (even higher than Australia). https://openai.com/signals/data
martheen··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
https://developer.android.com/developer-verification/guides/..., it's tied to the Google account so afterwards any device owned by the user can install F-Droid and any APK made by "unverified" devs.
martheen··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
Even when I'm still using a "classic" bank with card and a website that don't even use JS, I can't afford to use Windows Phone as my daily because it doesn't have the ride hailing apps used in my country. My current and previous office use proprietary app for clocking in and out, that are also only available on iOS and Android. Even public servants in my countries in all levels have to carry either of those two for location tracking.
martheen··on Born Against, or why hobby programming communities are against LLM usage
Only if the second LLM can be proven to never got trained/distilled from a model that trained on the original source code.

Probably impossible if the original code is publicly available since most code oriented LLM just gobble them all.

martheen··on Thanks FedEx, This Is Why We Keep Getting Phished (2024)
Wait, multiple messages get concatenated to MMS? In early 2010s I remember in my country it's still concatenated as regular text (so if one part is somehow missing or comes in very late, some phones will only show the surviving parts as one, others dump each parts separately), I guess they remove that functionality? Back then each part cost roughly one cent and plenty of phones in use still don't support MMS, then people just jump into WhatsApp entirely when Nokia support it in their feature phone.
martheen··on I wanted a clock that never needed setting. Things escalated
Nokia proposed using SIB9 5G time transmission as time syncing in clocks, the idea being that transmission is available openly even for non-subscriber. Softbank later proposed commercializing the service, which is unclear to me since surely the public transmission would be enough for casual users and anyone requiring more would already use full 5G to control the device anyway.
martheen··on I wanted a clock that never needed setting. Things escalated
I read up the manual before realizing the vaunted tech is simply a battery backup and setting the clock in the factory.
