I've been a tech nerd all my life. I do network and security engineering and live near Sydney, Australia

I guess, though John Smith would more literally be Jan Smit, and the surname de Vries might be a name more like North or York.

Claude etc have been on mainstream national news here in Australia multiple time in the last few months
martyvis··on Across the Channel
The visualisations of all the paths is quite eye opening. I hadn't realised there are such significant tidal currents through the channel.

martyvis··on Celebrating the 100th birthday of the kidney donated to him as a teenager
More simple put, his mother was born 100 years ago and her kidney lives on.
martyvis··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
It's an unfortunate side effect that the domain name has his name highlighting it.
martyvis··on Show HN: Vertumnus – printable posters of farmers' market produce seasonality
Per the small text at the bottom of the poster I would say they are based on shipment volumes -so how much is available. The lighter colour probably indicates variation depending on how good the growing season is
martyvis··on Findings Report on the July 8th Telstra Outage [pdf]
>This chassis was located in Melbourne and it was part of the mobile core timing architecture and was designed to provide stratum 2 and stratum 3 NTP services. When this server went back on line (at 2:50am), the GPS card in the chassis had reset during the change and began sending the incorrect date from 2006 into the network. The GPS card was actively used in that chassis and was missing a critical firmware update that was required to prevent this shift in time due to a known GPS rollover that was published in bulletins by the supplier. While the planned change of the NTP server chassis was the trigger point to begin the Outage, the steps leading to that point go back many years, as far back as 2020.

The core issue however was accumulation of technical debt (architectural changes in how timing systems were managed were not being tracked) and not recognising NTP as a sovereign system that needed to be properly managed.

martyvis··on Shares in humanoid robot firm Unitree surge 600% on Chinese stock market debut

That's a pretty bold claim.

martyvis··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
We're expecting a dry and hot spring and summer this year in Australia (and our winter has been milder than average to boot). https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-07-31/nsw-el-nino-weather-e...

It's a reference to the Beatles song Revolution Number 9 which includes a lot of clips like that. It does get old pretty quickly here.

martyvis··on Show HN: Atlas of Space
It doesn't seem it is showing the tilt for Earth correct. When I zoom in for around now, the North Pole is in full sun rather than mid Winter. (I'm in Australia so I don't know if it is somehow using my local timezone wrongly)
martyvis··on I keep turning my Google Sheets into phone-friendly webapps
Actually I have heard the exact opposite of what you are stating is true. Both Google and Apple fight very hard to avoid handing data to authorities. They don't want to be seen as some sort of easy conduit to government surveillance or shill. How does that benefit their reputation? I know of one case where Google spent millions on lawyers fighting government wanting access to an activist's email. Their FAQ here makes their policy pretty clear. https://support.google.com/transparencyreport/answer/9713961...

martyvis··on Geometric line-art of Wacław Szpakowski (2017)
It reminds of the art of M.C.Escher in the sense that it is driven by a mathematical mindset, yet goes beyond mindless repetition. This artist and M.C. Escher would have loved having access to computer drawing program I think.
martyvis··on Trains Are Offices
I have a 135 minute train ride to my office which I probably undertake once every week or two. Thankfully I can be seated for it and usually have enough room to either work with my laptop or just have a snooze or chillout to some media. While driving might get me their (on a good day) in 30 minutes less time, the train trip is definitely more relaxing and a better investment of my time.
martyvis··on Drone Incursions over USAF Bases in UK Enter Second Week
The fact that they know about the incursions means that they had least have some defence capability against them.
martyvis··on Starlink Direct to Cell

martyvis··on Using GPS in the Year 1565
Yes, pretty amazing. While I did have a couple of free tourist maps, I planned and executed a 1700km road trip to New Zealand basically using Google Maps on my laptop and then simply navigated on my phone. It seems incredible that you could entrust everyday's travel plans using this and it just worked. Sure you had to make sure you had downloaded maps (or at least cached) ahead of time for spotty networks. Only 25 years or so ago you absolutely had to have paper maps (and know how to read them) to embark on such a venture
martyvis··on SpaceX Super Heavy splashes down in the gulf, canceling chopsticks landing
I think they have a "build it and they will come" attitude. While their own Mars goals will need 100s if not 1000s of launches they also see new customers that would want launch and even recover much larger payloads than what are feasible today
martyvis··on SpaceX Super Heavy splashes down in the gulf, canceling chopsticks landing
But they haven't reused one yet AFAIK. They have reused an engine.
