Elastic | Software Engineer (Java) | REMOTE | Full-Time

We are on the lookout for a talented Java Engineer to join our Elasticsearch team. Seeking bright people with a deep knowledge of Java, algorithms, and concurrency and who love to take on new challenges. You will be working on areas of Elasticsearch that primarily deal with ingesting large volumes of data and the management of that data once indexed. For example, Index Lifecycle Management, Data Streams, and Ingest Pipelines are all part of data management. You can work fully remote from your home or (almost) anywhere in the world, though there’s a preference on EMEA for this role.

I’m happy to answer any questions! Reach me at matt.culbreth [at] elastic.co or apply here: https://jobs.elastic.co/jobs/elasticsearch/distributed-emea/...

mattculbreth··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (January 2012)
I was hired from a post on here in October 2010 for a company in Atlanta. I'm still there, and I've posted a few "we're hiring" posts since then (no hires yet).

mattculbreth··on IndexTank Holiday Hacks Contest Results
I got second place here for http://www.proggitftw.com. What a great contest.

I wrote a few Python scripts to scrape Proggit every few minutes, looking for new comments. Sending them to IndexTank was simple--just one call. On the Rails app for the searching, same thing--just one call and you can get the results from IndexTank.

I'm going to spend more time on it and make it a bit more usable. HelpShelf's highlighting is cool so I'll do that, and I think auto complete is a no brainer.

mattculbreth··on Proggit FTW - search Proggit comments [IndexTank contest submission]
Damn, thanks. I guess I gotta figure out how to send that query to IndexTank.
mattculbreth··on Evernote makes $800,000 per Month
I've actually had a note (in Evernote) for a while now to "find replacement for Evernote or write my own."

Every time they release a new version I see item after item that's of no interest to me. I really just want a simple place to store to-do lists, notes, etc. and have it available on every machine and phone I use.

They do a lot more than that now, but yet you still can't edit a to-do list with checkboxes on the iPhone!

mattculbreth··on Github: Free micro plan for a month
Really? We're going to complain about something that's free? Oh yeah, it's the Internet.
mattculbreth··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring? (December 2010 Edition)
Endgame Systems, Atlanta GA: http://endgames.us and http://www.iptrust.com

With $29 million in a recent Series A round we are rapidly expanding. Endgame Systems is a security software and services company. Our recent http://www.iptrust.com app shows one of our applications.

We are current hiring two types of developers:

* Python: Django, JavaScript, Cassandra, MySQL. We use Python all throughout our stack and in our big NoSQL backend systems.

* Visualization: we have petabytes of security related data, and presenting this in a sharp UI is challenging. We're looking to build with HTML 5, Protovis, Flash, and other related technologies.

Sadly no remote work is available right now, but our midtown Atlanta office is cool.

Please email me at mattculbreth AT gmail.com.

mattculbreth··on Please review ipTrust
Actually, use this URL to bypass the setup page: https://www.iptrust.com/demo/?code=a33b9

This is good for a one-time shot, and if you like the app please sign up.

mattculbreth··on Please review ipTrust
Howdy, so this is ipTrust, my company's first commercial-side application. We're in Beta now but a premium version is coming out in January. Our main product is our API, which lets you build applications against our large and unique dataset of botnets seen in the wild.

I'd love to get some feedback on this if you are in a networking or security related field!

mattculbreth··on Ask HN: Rails or Django?
The correct answer of course is "both". There are many similarities between the languages and the frameworks, and there are good job opportunities for each.

Go do a side project with one of them and release it. Then go do another side project with the other and release that. Then go get a job or contract with one or the other. You'll be able to say you've used each, you'll be able to give pros and cons to each, etc.

mattculbreth··on HN Domain Exchange: Add your unused domains
No, use this instead:

http://www.idlingdomains.com/

This came out a few months ago and there's a collection of URLs up there already.

mattculbreth··on Ask HN: What will be Facebook's weakness?
Thanks for posting this. I'm having all sorts of problems right now (today) with code that worked yesterday suddenly not. And nobody answers their bug posts.
mattculbreth··on Ask HN: What is an alternative to Google? Really.
A fun hack he put it to make a leaderboard of people who talk about DDG. It's at http://duckduckgo.com/spread.html.
mattculbreth··on Ask HN: What is an alternative to Google? Really.
Well you gotta try DuckDuckGo: http://duckduckgo.com/?t=mattc58

I've switched to it for most of my ad hoc searching. Occasionally I use Google still for some things.

I also though have 4 separate google accounts for email, which I can't really get away from. Well I guess I could but I probably won't for a while.

mattculbreth··on CouchDB Notice for 1.0.1 - Potential Data Loss

mattculbreth··on To retire comfortably, under-40 workers need to seriously bulk up savings
So this is cool, looks like a great app. Will it be as a service only, or will you offer customers the chance to buy the software and run it on their own hardware? I for one am leery of giving out all of my financial data.
mattculbreth··on Today I created a site where you can post your unused domain names
Ok I've got 3 domains on there:

SocialBenchmarks.com

convomaker.com

findati.me

mattculbreth··on Why I am dropping MongoDB for Mysql...
Well if one of his primary reasons for going back was that he doesn't like schema-less databases, then it's a fair thing to say that Mongo was never the right choice.

Of course he may have needed to do this project to discover that.

mattculbreth··on Ask HN: Where should I post an RFP for tech project?
