mavu··on Mohamed Al-Fayed began life as a porter in Alexandria and died as a billionaire
I kind of doubt that he actually began life as a porter.

Most of us begin as babies.

mavu··on Sony sends copyright notices to TV Museum about shows 40 to 60 years old
It's almost as if a for-profit company is not a reliable place for things that are not done for profit. Weird.
mavu··on Tesla FSD Beta tried to kill me last night
> at slower speeds that don't instantly kill you or others,

So, what speed would that be that is safe for pedestrians?

And how useful is FSD that only drives at that speed?

See where this is going?

mavu··on Tesla FSD Beta tried to kill me last night
How people allow this testing by customers to happen on their roads is beyond me.
mavu··on Unix sockets, Cygwin, SSH agents, and sadness
I love the first comment on the blog so much that i will replicate it here fully:

"Haha"

mavu··on The EU’s Digital Services Act is now in effect
Ahahahaha :D Thanks, made me laugh :)
mavu··on The Decreationist: Simone Weil’s thoughts on the unmaking of the self
Any text that uses GOD anywhere near an argument, is already boring and irrelevant.
mavu··on The EU’s Digital Services Act is now in effect
You call it "censorship", I call it fighting disinformation, fear mongering and state-actor propaganda campaigns.

I would welcome measures that go a lot further than this.

mavu··on Acronym’s new computer with Asus is bonkers, but that’s the point
This is a very bad take, and serves only to highlight the joylessness of the person writing it (and the original "design principles")

I would instantly dispute pretty much any word of the first 3 sentences in your post. (except maybe the name)

If you want to live in a world without choice, where everyone and everything looks the same (the inevitable endpoint of form follows function), be my guest, but at the end of your sad life you will remember all the times you looked back over the fence at all the people enjoying life in all its diverse forms, shapes, textures, activities and regret some choices you made along the way.

mavu··on Google Invites Employees to Sleep 'On Campus' for a Fee
If you are still working at google, it's time to start looking for a different employer.
mavu··on Understanding Kafka with Factorio (2019)
I'm willing to make an exception in this case, because using LLMs for nonsense is exactly the usecase they are built for.
mavu··on Understanding Kafka with Factorio (2019)
I clicked this and was immeasurably disapointed that the article talks about Apache Kafka, and not the author Kafka and how to understand his work with Factorio.

That would be a much much better article.

mavu··on Windows 9x and Word 9x at 800x600 resolution. Spacious. Comfy
first time (that i notice) that a link to such a conversation does not lead to twitter but to some other microbloging/social media site.
mavu··on Once hailed for decriminalizing drugs, Portugal is now having doubts
I've got your back.
mavu··on Lawsuit claims OpenAI stole 'massive amounts of personal data'
The operative term is not "private" it's "stolen".

But this is a nice setup for a straw man argument to distract people from the actual issue.

mavu··on Physicists develop a novel quantum theory of light-induced matter
Wait, I know this.

It was one of the plot lines of Destiny or Destiny 2!

mavu··on Benzene Exposure Alters Endocrine Activity
well, it could be usefull for other people to know that they are already dead when they smell some specific smell with some reaction.
mavu··on Former US SEC attorney: 'Get out of crypto platforms now'
Ahh, always a nice pass time to go to those tweets and block the first 30 accounts that reply.

feels good man.

mavu··on Dumb and Gets Things Done (2010)
I want to break a torch for the "Dumb and get things done" crowd. With out them nothing would get finished.

Try developing a complex and large product with a team consisting only of "smart and getting things done" people.

Not going to happen. never. complete disaster from the start.

You need the "dagtd" people to do the essential but boring parts. Attend customer meetings. Write requirements and documentation. etc.

NEED. THEM. BADLY. No way around it.

Luckily that is not as big a problem as it seems, because about 80% of "smart and getting things done" people are actually "dumb and getting things done".

They just don't know it. Which is perfectly fine. Just don't tell them.

mavu··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
Spatial computer.

Really Apple?

Is anyone left in that company leadership who is not a bad Jobs cosplayer?

mavu··on Into Thin AirPods
Every single time I see a person with Airpods or other true wireless earphones, i cannot help but smile.

Because it is always nice to see other people clearly marked as guillable fools, who marvel at the emperors new clothes.

I hope this trend never dies, because it really does provide endless entertainment to me.

And I suspect Apple hopes this as well, because they are making a killing selling expensive shit to the same people over and over again.

mavu··on Expensive energy may have killed more Europeans than Covid-19 last winter
Can't possibly be secondary effects of Covid-19, right?

Because that would mean we would have to acknowledge long covid, and possible immune system damage of repeated infections.

That won't do at all, people might want not to die for the ecconomy.

mavu··on Ask HN: Fired for Using Firefox
Probably lucky that you noticed what a terrible company that was so early and quickly.
mavu··on Contrast Rebellion
can we extend this to hostile UIs? Please?
mavu··on The core problem with hamburger menus
> It seems like most people don't actually like hamburger menus. So why do we, as developers, keep using them in our products and designs?

Oh my. what a great question. Simple answer: Because there are as many incompetent designers as there are incompetent managers, and we usually think "well, i guess he knows what he is doing" (yes. he. almost always)

Spoiler: He does not. And modern UIs are full of actively unusable widgets, confusing displays, bad readability and are in a general state of "the emperors new clothes".

mavu··on A look at Crystal, a programming language for humans
Counterpoint: why should I care if it "takes off"? It is a very much stable, fast, useful language that can be used today.
mavu··on It's A(door)able
Just when you are thoroughly resigned to the fact that humanity is just terrible, and that a large asteroid would be just the thing the planet needs, someone comes along and puts something out into the world that is just nice and beautiful.

Well, shit.

And THANK YOU!

mavu··on The lifesaving sled dog Balto had genes unlike those of dog breeds today
> The genome of the 1920s Siberian husky Balto suggests that greater genetic diversity and less inbreeding contribute to better health

Wow. Really? Never would have guessed.

mavu··on SpaceX Starship rocket explodes minutes after launch from Texas
Went POOOFH faster than twitter, but much less entertaining.
mavu··on DOOM maps to SVG to laser cutter
Nice work, but I feel kind of let down by it being sliced and stacked.

would have been much more impressive if all surfaces were lasercut (with automatically generated finger joints for extra bonus). Could even have marked the surface with hints for assembly.

Instant product to sell on etsy for people to paint their own physical 3d doom level.

3dprint some floating eyeballs, and grab a G.I.Joe figure and you have a doom tabletop game.
