max-ibel··on Mothbox 4.0
OTOH, it'd a fun science project just to built one, for maybe a different set of kids that operate the box.

Just needs motivated teachers, if you ask me. I assume the mothbox is more of a high-school project, building one seems on that level as well.

max-ibel··on Is the world really running out of sand?
If you're bilingual, it's often useful to read a wikipedia topic in more than one language, as the editorial slant may be different in different languages.

Can at least confirm for German/English.

max-ibel··on A $1k Wheelchair
Are the hospital chairs cheap? Genuinely asking...
max-ibel··on Unplanned Exposure During Diving in the Spent Nuclear Fuel Pool (2011)
That's a pretty good post-mortem report. I hope they have implemented all the proposed process changes.
max-ibel··on My 71 TiB ZFS NAS After 10 Years and Zero Drive Failures
There seems to be a huge difference between spin-down while NAS is up vs shutting the whole NAS down and restart. When I start my NAS, it takes a bunch of time to be back up: it seems to do a lot of checking on/ syncing off the drives and puts a fair amount of load on them (same is true for CPU as well, just look at your CPU load right after startup).

OTOH, when the NAS spins up a single disk again, I haven't notice any additional load. Presumably, the read operation just waits until the disk is ready.

max-ibel··on Dynamicland 2024
If you are happy to live with B&W printing for your untraceable printing needs, maybe you can fill the yellow cartridge with clear ink (not sure if water is OK).

But then, how do B&W laser printer allow for tracing ?

max-ibel··on Ukrainian drones now spray 2,500° C thermite streams right into Russian trenches
AFAIK, Napalm is illegal against a civilian population. IDK that it is illegal to use against military installations.

Not that I think it is necessarily a smart move on the part of Ukraine, since Russia can play this game too.

max-ibel··on Free DDNS with Cloudflare and a cronjob
That looks good.

I'd probably prefer doing this at lower layers like pf, since I know how to reload those configs via cron, and since I want to avoid unwanted or malicious packets to even make it to the syslog code.

I was just surprised to find no recipe online, it's apparently more of a niche case than I thought. Worth documenting, probably.

max-ibel··on Free DDNS with Cloudflare and a cronjob
Did anyone here here set up a good rsyslogd configuration where the receiving syslog collector limits incoming logs to only known ddns machines ?

I think I may be able to stitch something together with periodically reconfigured packet filters, but I'd appreciate an existing solution.

Bonus points if running on freebsd.

max-ibel··on With fifth busy beaver, researchers approach computation's limits
Exactly. Those are also not funny at all.

max-ibel··on Fungus breaks down ocean plastic
Not too bad for a 70s book. There's also "Directive 51"
max-ibel··on Fungus breaks down ocean plastic
That would make a great sci-fi thriller, if it doesn't already exist:)
max-ibel··on Tokyo's Government Is Building Its Own Dating App to Combat Falling Birthrates
My understanding is that they may not exactly be baseload, but will run only some of the time. Not ideal, but better than the worst case.
max-ibel··on Show HN: I made a tiny camera with super long battery life
Since there is so much anxiety about mac-only -- could you provide a small python file to read out the raw photos on any platform ?

It looks like you could just 'dd if=/dev/disk123 of=/tmp/bigrawfiles' and then postprocess with said python script.

Yes, not as good as a polished apple app, but for many people that really like the hardware and don't mind a bit of DIY, it's maybe enough...

max-ibel··on New telescope images of Jupiter's moon Io rival those from spacecraft
I agree; I'm thinking that's it's useful to be able to get frequent snapshots of the whole moon at this resolution (if you are interested in time lapse to track volcanic activity for instance). The satellite-based stitched photo probably took a long time to collect.

Also, without knowing details, I suspect you can improve the LBT images as the system matures, but as you say, probably not at the resolution the satellite provides.

max-ibel··on Armor from Mycenaean Greece turns out to have been effective
"The Court Jester" movie didn't help dispel that myth ... ;)
max-ibel··on Does anyone need a 1k Hz gaming display?
The vibe of this article reads much like that of those praising gold plated audio cables.

Then again, growing up on amber CRT tubes, my sensory apparatus is no longer able to discern those higher echelons of perfection anyways ...

max-ibel··on I love my wife. My wife is dead (1946)
Seconded. Letters of Note (there are various printed volumes as well, e.g. "Speeches of Note", "Letters of Notes: Cats", ...) are a very fine collection of thoughts.

One of my favorites is "Why explore space": https://news.lettersofnote.com/p/why-explore-space.

max-ibel··on As solar capacity grows, some of America's most productive farmland is at risk
the high voltage lines are probably not causing wildfires; it's the low voltage wooden poles that do.
max-ibel··on The forgotten war on beepers
> what kind of school brings this matter to a judge in the first place...?

The kind of school that prevents a student with dreadlocks to attend schold indefinitely [1]? This is happening right now. In the past, there was also the role playing game (dnd) satanism scare...

Granted, I'm not sure if there have been actual arrests, but it's the logical next step to take.

max-ibel··on Why Scientists Are Calling for the Moon to Be Better Protected from Development
Nothing will "move". Think of it as "cp", not "mv".
max-ibel··on When Eyes in the Sky Start Looking Right at You
It's an interesting thought how much of the images created will be ground truth vs AI enhanced.

Will I be killed by a drone because my haircut looks like Osama Bin Laden in a really blurry picture of 100 pixels ?

Some of the advances of AI enhancing and outfills are pretty scary in that respect. Like the Xerox compression bug in scanners, but much more pervasive, and, since it's goverments doing it, more or less inscrutable.

max-ibel··on Ask HN: What's the cheapest way to become SOC2 compliant for a pre-seed startup?
Great question. I'd be also interested in good auditor firms. That's really what SOC is - sign off by auditors on criteria. SOC-1 is for an initial snapshot, SOC-2 for a 1 year interval or so, proving the controls work.
max-ibel··on Did insurance fire brigades let uninsured buildings burn?
Watch the bbc documentary “the crusades” by Terry Jones. I think it is pretty well researched.
max-ibel··on Ask HN: Should HN ban ChatGPT/generated responses?
Well, everything is math, at some level. Supreme Court decisions might be. There are software packages used to day, using some "AI", to help judges determine the adequate level of punishments looking at circumstantial factors determining recividism rates et cetera [1] [2].

I believe that in the not too distant future there will be pressure to use these "magic" AIs to be applied everywhere, and this pressure will probably not look very hard at whether the AI is good at math or not. Just look at all the pseudoscience in the criminal system [3]. I believe this poses a real problem, so keeping hareping on this is probably the right response.

max-ibel··on Google introduces end-to-end encryption for Gmail on the web
I guess this means search features will only be for metadata (to, from, subject?)

That’s a pretty hard sell for power users…

max-ibel··on Worst Opening Sentences of 2022
I recommend Roald Dahl's "Going Solo". The Audiobook narrated by Andrew Sachs is quite compelling.

Also, maybe "The Napoleon of Notting Hill" by G.K. Chesterton.

And of course most by P.G. Wodehouse.

max-ibel··on Ask HN: Should HN ban ChatGPT/generated responses?
Trurl's machine, indeed. It insisted that the volume of the unit cube and unit ball are both the same, and 1, in all dimensions, even though it knew the correct formula for the surface of the n-ball.

Wen I pointed out that n=2 is a simple counter example, it refused to talk to me (no answer, try-again button, ad inifinitum). Well, safer than Trurl's machine.
