maxgashkov··on I Became a Citizen of Japan
I know a few folks personally who got rejected for PR but got approved for citizenship. First, both of these get handled by different branches of government with the different screening guidelines (often not published). Second, perception differs: for a long time PR was viewed as something like 'all the benefits of living in Japan without any consequences', so the income requirements were stricter etc. (albeit all of this is changing now and it's difficult to say what will be the final state).
maxgashkov··on How the Claude Code team does code review
My interest is mostly from the management perspective -- in 2025 I have seen a prime example when a heavily vibe-coding team chugged out half-baked products that other teams later had to deal with and this was not pretty and created all sorts of interpersonal issues; the same I fear may be happening here as well.

I'm looking at Claude Code and they chug releases daily and sometimes more often then this, if someone has to stop and code a critical path by hand or smth I'm wondering how this is handled.

--

On a separate topic, the "llm freaks" -- I know you intended this as an insult, but I'm actually proud to be called a freak again, and I thought this is the place where freaks are discussing things.

maxgashkov··on How the Claude Code team does code review
I'd be more interested to read on what 10% of the code is still getting written by humans and how it doesn't become a bottleneck at the pace they described.
maxgashkov··on Tesla Roadster
Explain what you mean please. First, this is not going on a public road anytime ever, so in an unlikely event this product will actually see the light of day, it’s very likely that anyone who attempts this will do it on mostly static controlled circuit/pad. I don’t know how they did the demo, but I don’t see it as something outside of the realm of reality to calculate ‘kickflip’ on the fly using whatever sensors they put in this thing.

I wouldn’t want to sit in it tho (and I’m guessing no one in the demographic this will be sold to would want this level of risk either).

maxgashkov··on Tesla Roadster
I agree with the first two points, but why do you think the thrusters have to be manually controlled? My expectation would be it'd just perform one of the pre-programmed tricks taking in the sensor data to adapt mid-way, the same way they do auto-landings in SpaceX (no one is controlling the landing booster manually, right?).
maxgashkov··on Telegram Desktop vulnerability allowed any user's file to be stolen
> and I haven’t found anything lacking in the latter, UX wise

I'm sorry if I'll sound condescending, but you probably don't use either frequently enough. With telegram it's the little (and sometimes not so little) things, e.g.:

  - voice message transcription
  - you can select part of the message via long-press and use it as a quote when responding
  - massively more complex formatting possible
  - bots as the first class citizens not gated behind some bullshit 'Business' KYC/subscription
  - is not crippled by prohibiting system-level phonebook access like whatsapp
  - extreme flexibility in managing large groups, mostly due to the bot point above
  - and many more
All of the above does not excuse lack of e2e by default, this is almost embarrassing in 2026 now, but Telegram is the most polished IM experience of all the apps I have tried.

maxgashkov··on Sites in ChatGPT
> Polished and easy to use website builders have been around for a long time, from Wordpress all the way to Wix.

The issue with the Wordpress and Wix is that the site stay polished for approximately 1 second after it has been initially published. In 6mo~1yr it's unmaintainable pile of dogshit that is easier to redo from scratch.

maxgashkov··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
I appreciate your offer but I have always been on the Eng. SOR and I have PR for quite some time now, so all these changes do not concern me immediately. What I argue is that the whole program is riddled with avenues for abuse and very little recourse for a worker. And I have seen first-hand accounts of such abuse and I try to tell you that your positive experience does not invalidate the shortcomings of the SSW visa.
maxgashkov··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
I have worked for a company that employed workers via TITP and then via SSW programs, I have been a part of the volunteer expat support groups that regularly dealt with the immigration issues, including the ones with the SSW program.

Look, on one hand I'm glad that it worked out for you, that you had enough work-life balance to study and get certified for the SSW2 program and you're content to stay on it until you're physically unable to work anymore or somehow find a way to qualify for a permanent residence under the new guidelines for both you and your wife.

On the other, the story is full of caveats:

- company hiring in that sector has to be well-managed and well-behaved (oversight is often superficial compounded by the fact that in a lot of cases, the hiring company and the employer-of-record are actually 2 different entities);

- you have sufficient time and energy to skill-up after work, especially if it's physical labor;

- you have sufficient funds to skill-up;

- in case you need to change your job, you're not in distress from the current employer or financially.

I don't know what your cultural background is. In my worldview, these programs are inhumane. Humane variant is this: if you (collective "you", Japan) deem the person worthy of coming here and changing the bedpans of your elderly when none of the Japanese youth wants to do it for the same salary, you get the fuck out of the way unless this immigrant breaks your laws, and at that point you deport them. But if they come here and obey your laws they should have the reciprocal security in their old age, not conditional on how well they test on JLPT and for sure not conditional on unrealistic expectation of earning significantly more than an average Japanese worker.

P.S. Socializing is nice. You can still go and pick up the non-existent trash when you're on a Eng/Intl/Humanities visa and even on PR. Just saying.

maxgashkov··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
They are not naive, they are malicious (to be clear: I'm not generalizing towards all Japanese, just to the ruling majority). Following is only my speculation but I guess the plan is to use short-term workers until promised breakthrough in AI and robotics closes this need altogether.
maxgashkov··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
These are not in conflict. The recent changes make almost impossible for a low-wage worker in the elderly care sector to get permanent residence and hence become a "burden" to society longterm, but on the other hand, specified skilled worker visa (SSW) program expands even more. The gist of it is that the worker can come and work for a specific industry (in reality it almost always means specific company) for a 5 years max and then fuck off back to their country.

I shit you not, this is the plan.

maxgashkov··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
Purchasing power dropped with yen weakening, shrinkflation and inflation in all shopping categories, stagnant salaries and work policies + politicians who are preying on all of this with the "foreigners bad" rhetoric.
maxgashkov··on AX – Google’s Open Agentic Orchestrator
Compared to enterprise yours is missing egress control and secrets management, if you make the isolation watertight you cripple the agent's performance, and then the careful game of whack-a-mole begins when you stand up local package mirrors, authentication brokers etc. etc.

maxgashkov··on Dario, Please
Look at the post-incident investigation: https://metr.org/blog/2026-08-26-openai-hugging-face-inciden...

While I do think OpenAI were negligent in not developing the harness that would allow to understand better what's happening close to realtime, I'd say "anybody who looked" in that case would probably be someone with another swarm tasked with analysis, it's no longer "glanceable" in a traditional sense.

maxgashkov··on I have a theory that software drives people insane
Oh boy, I do mostly agree with you but this applies well if you’re making software for the fellow SWEs. While a lot of them can be an annoying bunch, once you’re making something for general consumption, like let’s say running an e-commerce platform, interacting with your end users could be probably better compared to a front desk/service industry job. It’s very hard to keep that positive attitude then.
maxgashkov··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Yeah, I have been doing this with a naive firewall rule blocking its IP from egress, but how long until they'll wise up to it and start truly nefarious shit like using hidden MACs to acquire multiple addresses in the background? Then you could probably VLAN it off, but most people don't have managed gear on their networks.
maxgashkov··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
PSA for the home automation enthusiasts who keep smart TVs connected to the network to turn them on or off remotely: a lot of other sources that are likely connected to HDMI ports (Apple TVs, gaming PCs etc.) could do the same via HDMI-CEC, so unless you're truly using the 'smart' features there is less and less reasons to keep the TV itself connected to any network.

maxgashkov··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Yeah, my bad. After re-reading your original comment I think I was responding to the part that explains 'visa sticker grants entry, residence status is separate', but I have somehow missed the tail of 'you cannot enter w/o the sticker'. In Japan, the former is exactly the same shape but the latter is not. If you have a long-term residence status (and carry the card) you can enter the country on it alone.

There are some technicalities -- your passport has to carry the re-entry permit, but it's affixed to everyone who requests it at the port of exit, granted it's up to 1 yr.

maxgashkov··on Kubernetes on Oxide: How customer needs shaped our integrations
While I'm fascinated by Oxide, their style and work culture (if open documents are to be believed), I do think you're misunderstanding the homelab people a lot. Yes, I want the chance to play with an actual Oxide hardware in the same sense I'd want to touch a mainframe from the 80s. In the end though this is an extremely opinionated piece of tech that doesn't really invite or support tinkering. And homelab is about building something that no sane production-grade maker would ever be doing, so selling to this market would be quite an insane business venture.

Could you confirm if the SRE role would allow work from Japan or do you strictly need the person to be US-based?
maxgashkov··on BMW Spider-Man in-car advertising
I guess it depends on the maker. For my car it nudges the wheel back into the lane in addition to vibrating.
maxgashkov··on BMW Spider-Man in-car advertising
That's quite insane then. Especially the lane departure warning / assist was downright dangerous in snowy conditions when the road markings became partially covered, I cannot imagine driving with that setting on all the time.
maxgashkov··on BMW Spider-Man in-car advertising
I get all of these with more or less recent (2023) Mazda here in Japan, but all of them can be turned off in settings. Are they always-on in EU?
