mcv··on Formlabs Studio 1 $699 Resin Printer
Is it? I've heard of people getting good results with PLA and a 0.2mm nozzle. I don't doubt resin is better, but PLA seems to be acceptable to a lot of people. And it's far safer and cheaper.
mcv··on Cuba is skipping its November 1, 2026 clock change and staying on DST until 2027
It's weird to standardise on summer time instead of standard time. It moves you one timezone to the east. And in western Europe, a lot of countries are already on central European time. Permanent summertime would put them on eastern European time, same as Kyiv. In winter the sun wouldn't come up until 9:30.
mcv··on MacBook Pro with Touch Enabled Proled XDR Display
I've had a Thinkpad with a touch screen and I loved it. Sometimes touching something on the screen is a lot faster than grabbing the mouse, moving the cursor, and then clicking.

Although it's a lot more useful on laptops that can fold into a tablet, which neither MacBooks nor my Thinkpad can do.

mcv··on Start Doing Graph Theory
I've been doing a lot with graphs over the past couple of years. Basically since I started using neo4j, although not everything involves neo4j directly. I've developed a number of really interesting graph algorithms, but I'm always a bit disappointed by how little use I get out of my graph theory knowledge. I've never needed a Hamilton path or do something with the degrees of my vertices. It's all just logic and intuition.

But maybe I should read this to see if there's anything that applies to my current work.

mcv··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
It's not that the Luddites didn't understand the technology, they objected to people getting fired to replace them with technology. Technology being used to create more unemployment.

So in a way, AI is the perfect tool for them.
mcv··on A 10-year-old CNN outperforms frontier LLMs for skin cancer diagnosis
Are transformers better at all use cases? Or only a specific subset? This sounds like a classification problem to me, which neural networks have always been pretty good at.
mcv··on A 10-year-old CNN outperforms frontier LLMs for skin cancer diagnosis
Hardly surprising that models specialised at language aren't as good at a highly specialist task as a model trained specifically at that task, isn't it?

I know some people want to believe that LLMs are good at everything, but they're not. They're good at language.

mcv··on Ask HN: If the models are so good, why doesn't OpenAI just start 100 companies?
They're selling the shovels to the gold miners.
mcv··on Show HN: SimCity, but with Permits
Wasn't a train line in California cancelled because Musk's Hyperloop was going to do it? What ever happened to that?

My impression so far is that hyperloop is simply a scam.

mcv··on Show HN: SimCity, but with Permits
Doesn't the oversight come from the members?

I often read stories on the internet of how dysfunctional American HOAs are, and nobody ever explains why it's like that. HOAs in most other countries seem to work fine. But it sounds like they have too much power and not enough safeguards for democracy (like a quorum).

mcv··on If you don't run your own LLM proxy, how do you know whats going on?
Unless you are a robot, you'll be fine. GDPR is about digitally recorded information. If you are a robot, it's probably best to delete that information.
mcv··on Someone on Torrent Sites Kept Fucking with My Sonarr
An .exe? Doesn't everybody run their *arr stack on Linux? Well, that's what I do at least. Even so, crap like this has to be easily blockable. And I wouldn't mind if there was a service that handled that for everybody.
mcv··on Wayland desktop for Linux with skeuomorphic design
Steam screenshots end up somewhere deep in the steam folder structure. Not simply in an easily accessible downloads or screenshots directory in my home dir.
mcv··on Wayland desktop for Linux with skeuomorphic design
Absolutely. I keep falling into these traps. I just got a Mac, and it's terrible at these. It's notorious for hiding the scrollbar, but why would they make it hard to find the thing I just downloaded? Or a screenshot I just took? I can open it, but that doesn't take me to the file location so I can actually do something with it. Although Steam is by far the worst at that.

It's almost as if we didn't learn anything about UX in the past 30 years.

mcv··on Wayland desktop for Linux with skeuomorphic design
This looks like peak skeuomorphism. I like it, but ray-tracing the desktop sounds like overkill.
mcv··on Deloitte falsified documents to evade tax on Abramovich's wealth
Remember when a major bank turned out to have laundered billions for Mexican drug cartels and was fined only millions?

People would go to prison for crimes like these, but somehow companies get only a slap on the wrist. Whenever a company commits serious, blatant crimes like these, everybody who knew about it and didn't blow the whistle should be considered an accomplice and go to prison. And if it's big enough, or part of the MO of that company, it should be fined the entire value of the company. Nationalise it. Stuff like this should not be tolerated.

Feed it fake images, then.
mcv··on Why DuckDB 2.0 is faster
I've had that several times. It says something I don't quite understand (complex, jargon, non sequitur or otherwise makes no sense to me), so I ask it to explain, and it discovers it was wrong. And apparently more people are having this experience. Why does that keep happening?

At least it emphasises the importance of truly understanding what Claude is saying. Because if you don't understand it, there's a good chance it's wrong. Do not ever think you're stupid for not understanding something Claude says.

mcv··on Sorry, I'm in a meeting
I'd appreciate it if the exec said "The turnover rate for our seniors is very high. Does anyone have any ideas?" "Compensation!" Exec: "No, I mean, maybe pizza every Friday, or a team outing or something?"

(Really happened)

mcv··on Sorry, I'm in a meeting
It sounds like voice acting. And not particularly good voice acting. Too clear, a bit too bombastic, and as if reading from a script. At least the two that I briefly listened to.
mcv··on Sorry, I'm in a meeting
It certainly sounds a lot more believable as a meeting than the obvious voice acting on https://iminafleeting.com
mcv··on YouTuber Says Cops Visited Him After He Built a Flock-Style Camera to Track Cops
Criticism of bad government policy is never racist.
mcv··on Man discovers his parents' coffee machine used 1TB of data in 10 days
I think the reason to use a coffee machine is because it's an innocent device that doesn't require any data whatsoever, so nobody would ever suspect it of something so nefarious.

They're explicitly taking advantage of their customers' trust, and deserve to go bankrupt.

mcv··on Man discovers his parents' coffee machine used 1TB of data in 10 days
Let's saturate every review site with reports of their spying. This definitely deserves to be public knowledge.
mcv··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
I keep arguing that memory needs more competition, and people keep pointing out that it's too slow and expensive to ramp up. But if the threshold to enter that market is so steep, that means it cannot function as a free market and requires regulation.

In this case I think investment in more production is the only option, and it needs to happen even if it is expensive and slow.

mcv··on Forever junior: Skills AI can't develop for you
Apparently Criteo is an advertising tool that collects tons of data from visitors. So why is this blog there? I can't help but wonder if it's part of a scheme to convince people to unblock them.
mcv··on Forever junior: Skills AI can't develop for you
I have a tendency to prefer writing my own library for something instead of relying on someone else's. Not always, obviously, but quite often existing libraries fall short or are too complex to use. And solving the problem myself is almost always an educational experience.

For example, I'm currently writing my own graph layout library because I'm not happy with Dagre and ELK.

mcv··on Mistral Large 4
Sure, but where they draw the line is to exclude a lot of widely lauded literary cornerstones. People aren't complaining about banning porn, they're complaining about banning literature.
mcv··on Mistral Large 4
The bicycle looks significantly better in high. And feet and hands are actually where they should be. The road looks worse, though. No flowers either. And in neither is the pelican sitting on the saddle, but I can understand it's hard for a pelican to ride a bicycle properly.

Now what would have been cool is if Mistral on high reasoning had realised that pelicans are the wrong proportion to ride a bicycle, and had designed a bicycle more suited to pelicans. Let me know if any model ever manages that.
