mday404··on US election results are being suppressed on HN
I agree, and I'm disappointed that the Democratic Party didn't have to change itself more to get this result, but this is a lot more than just winning a few house seats.

The opposition party taking back both the Senate and the House has only happened four other times since 1946 -- notably, in 2018 the Democrats only took back the House. And this result includes states that have basically never flipped before: the last time Kansas had a Democratic senator was 1932, when Democrat meant something totally different.

mday404··on Why Your Shrink Should Prescribe Exercise
I mean yeah, if prescribing exercise worked, it would be great. But physical therapists can barely get people to do their at-home exercises -- I can't imagine adherence would be very high for people with mental problems that could be mitigated with exercise
mday404··on Backdoor in Claude Code for VS Code extension on the Cursor Marketplace
The AI summary here is right and the human info is wrong -- Anthropic does publish the Cursor extension in general, but did not publish this version
mday404··on LLM Voice
Eh, I think many of the harms of AI are currently also nebulous. It's not as though the harms are all concrete and massive and the benefits are vague and "in the future"
mday404··on DoorDash to acquire Instacart
I feel like this is way more true of Instacart. Ordering takeout is just not that necessary.
mday404··on Anthropic S-1
look at mr. richie rich here, bragging that he doesn't have to shop around to find the cheap apples
mday404··on RuneScape Bench: MMOs for Agents [video]
This is awesome, I love OSRS and I've often wondered what the world would be like if bots were how you were supposed to play the game. Great project!
mday404··on Degraded availability for GitHub Actions, GitHub Pages and Webhooks
Agreed. It's not at all clear that GitHub as an independent company would be doing much better at dealing with this new world than GitHub within Microsoft is doing.
mday404··on There's never been a better time to go into math (by: 3blue1brown) [video]
Absolutely, it becomes a much smaller niche. Most people just want a table. Only a few want something unique.
mday404··on A Rose.com by Any Other Name (2001)[pdf]
Obvious parallels to today (e.g. Allbirds rebranding as an AI company)

I also didn't know until recently that there was a follow-up study by some of the same authors -- in the aftermath of the dotcom crash, removing .com from a company's name caused a corresponding valuation jump: https://home.business.utah.edu/finmc/Dotcom_Paper_JCFVersion...

mday404··on There's never been a better time to go into math (by: 3blue1brown) [video]
There's an analogy here in woodworking -- rich people still go to craftspeople when they want e.g. a table that doesn't look like everyone else's. Same way people need to work with software engineers / web designers now, if they want to have a website that doesn't look like everyone else's.
mday404··on Woman who rescued injured crow keeps getting 'thank-you gifts' from birds [video]
Yeah I was already feeling like this year was my crow year, and now I'm understanding how easy it is??
mday404··on Coding Alone
This seems to have a pretty serious reverse-causation problem -- it's possible that popular software gets more contributors because it's popular, which seems intuitively correct, and that explains the correlation between number of contributors and popularity much more clearly than this nebulous idea that "maybe the number of contributors makes the software better and better software becomes more popular"
mday404··on "I'm Embarrassed on Behalf of the Tech Industry"
Man I couldn't even log in to my Amtrak account for like a week. Not during a rush period, just the basic login flow did not work. I don't understand how websites can be this broken.
mday404··on So you think you could be an electrician?
Yeah this has essentially already happened for HVAC - repair is often more expensive than replacement because labor is so expensive and parts are so cheap.
mday404··on Reasons I didn't become an EMT, ranked
I love picking up these practical skills even though I hardly ever use them. I did a whole course in avalanche safety right before I left Colorado. Now I live in Philadelphia. Still happy I did it.
mday404··on Tell HN: Bob Cringely has died
Yeah when you have backers imploring you to just admit defeat honestly, you’ve reached a whole different level of Kickstarter failure
