mdoyle··on Ask HN: Incentive-based task manager for parents & children
Have you seen Choremonster? https://www.choremonster.com/.

We've used Choremonster and it seems like one of the most engaging.

Your suggestion of taking photos sounds innovative, but in most cases you'll be there to witness the chores happening so the photos wont be adding anything other than maybe a bit of fun for the children. And the photos themselves may become repetitive, as the chores generally are. Perhaps there's another app idea where photos are used to communicate/manage something between parent and children.

We've used choremonster and its not bad at all. It's quite a challenge to get the balance right in terms of volume of tasks and granularity, so there's some upfront investment - and patience - to get things right. The children do get incentive from it though, but their interest quickly wanes, particularly when you've had a busy couple of days and haven't reviewed their completed tasks )

This is all getting very personal. We wanted to create a fun project to see if people would join something they knew nothing about but obviously we had to lie a bit to ensure that we didn't give the game away. Ever read the book Join Me by Danny Wallace? We wanted to see if people would join a website in the same manner. We've got an idea for what we want the club to be but we wanted to keep it under wraps to keep it fun.

We've had lots of users join. It's been a really great day. I guess you've 'caught us' ) No harm done I hope.

No idea. It's being shared amongst my group of friends on facebook. Sounds intriguing, at least to me. (I've applied).
mdoyle··on Ask HN: I work in a data centre and we have to make it greener. Ideas?
Raise your operating temperature by a degree or two and reduce cost of air conditioning. There's a wealth of things you can do. Would be interested in novel ideas aswell so hopefully lots of responses to this post!
mdoyle··on Ask HN: I work in a data centre and we have to make it greener. Ideas?
Work with your energy supplier to run your site from generators during scheduled or peak times, thereby taking the load off the national grid and reducing costs. A number of factors to be considered of course, such as the cost of fuelling your generators, and the increased risk. Savings could be in 10's or 100's of thousands.
mdoyle··on Show HN: Want to learn design? Try Design Lab.
I would expect a site like this to provide a good user experience, e.g. confirmation that my email address was accepted. Signed up all the same because it sounds like a great idea and just what I'm looking for.
mdoyle··on Thank HN: Claim your personal Screenleap handle until April 30
thanks!
mdoyle··on Ask HN: What is your first piece of code?
On the ZX Spectrum:

10 PRINT <something>; 20 GOTO 10

I was hooked from that point on. Brings back memories.

mdoyle··on Ask HN: I want to start programming - Should I start BASIC?
Earlier in my career I concentrated learning how to construct software irrespective of language. I remember a good book I read probably 10 years ago, called "Code Complete". Its still on my shelf.

I also don't recommend copying other people's code until you are familiar with the language in question and can debug and enhance the code.

Choose a language - nothing wrong with Basic for learning purposes - get a book that takes you from Hello World to building a small app and read it cover to cover. And be patient. Don't copy other people's code for now. I think you'll get more reward this way and will be able to build upon your learnings instead of spending your time trying to make your current mashups work.

mdoyle··on Ask HN: Feedback on Brand New Social Online Dating Site
There's nothing to provide feedback on? Looks like it could be a fun concept but I have no idea how you plan to revolutionise my dating world?
mdoyle··on Ask HN: We built a site but got beaten to the launch by another site. What next?
At the moment we allow the user to post hints to their wall that they like some of their friends. We have a list of approximately 20 other ideas for improving the viral aspect which we are shortlisting as we speak. I'll take the opportunity here to thank you all for your input. Greatly appreciated!
mdoyle··on Ask HN: Please review my app onesmallpage
Great idea. Impressed. Introduce the ability for me to request more pages via email? I can see me using this to read more in my lunch hour.
mdoyle··on Ask HN: How can I quit talking myself out of my own ideas?
I've experienced hi's and lo's whilst developing a product. The thing that keeps me optimistic and excited is the possibility that the product becomes a success in some small or big way. Why not set yourself a challenge to develop something over the coming weeks/months and submit it here for review. If anything you'll learn something along the way. You will also get so much insightful feedback from the community that will help you develop your product further maybe. Pick your best idea and get to work is my advice. Be tenacious in your endeavours.
mdoyle··on Ask HN: best-paid field to speciaze in programming/IT?
I agree with the other comments; do what you are most passionate about. I found the following for you, not sure if its useful. There's a downloadable PDF but you have to supply some details. Looks pretty good though. http://www.roberthalftechnology.com/SalaryCenter
mdoyle··on Ask HN: Review my startup Iddhis.com (yc winter 2011 denied)
A few screenshots might be useful. As it stands, I am reluctant to sign-up because I don't know what I am getting. Sounds interesting although I wonder what is the benefit of this over email.
mdoyle··on Ask HN: A possible Delicious Alternative?
I think it depends on who you are and what you want from the web? E.g. I've just spent three years finishing a masters and being able to bookmark hundreds of articles which I used for research was invaluable. Sure, you bookmark in your browser, but I use three machines daily and numerous browsers. Having access to my bookmarks anywhere I was studying was very useful. I think the millions of users on various bookmarking sites is testament to the value of bookmarking.
mdoyle··on Database development mistakes made by application developers
I started in database development in 1995ish. Surprised to see an article like this detailing the exact same problems we had back then. Our solution was to have classroom sessions with developers, to provide them with the education they wanted/needed. Biggest problem back then was the use of embedded SQL rather than stored procedures.
mdoyle··on Ask HN: Please rate our startup Neetly
We can enable that functionality quite easily. Will consider further. Thanks for the feedback!!
mdoyle··on Ask HN: Please rate our startup Neetly
Hi, thanks for taking the time to do this! I would agree with you and we'll consider it. It's great to get the feedback, thanks.
mdoyle··on Ask HN: Please rate our startup Neetly
Thanks for the feedback. The most common aspect about all the feedback posted so far is the understanding of the concept. It is clear to us that we need to review the homepage and the message the product communicates, and the placement or function of images or buttons. We never thought there would be comparisons to VPN's.
mdoyle··on Ask HN: Please rate our startup Neetly
Thanks. Yes, we are discussing the term "network" between ourselves currently since its quite a prominent issue in the feedback. We are also discussing the home page layout/functionality in terms of the three icons.
mdoyle··on Ask HN: Please rate our startup Neetly
thank you. useful.
mdoyle··on Ask HN: Please rate our startup Neetly
Hi, simply because we have most experience in those technologies.
mdoyle··on Ask HN: Please rate our startup Neetly
Sorry about that. Will check it out. We've tested on all major browsers/operating systems so we'll revisit.
mdoyle··on Ask HN: Your tips/hacks for great academic writing
Ever tried free-writing? I've just completed a Masters and would use free-writing as a warm up exercise fairly regularly. Not sure it works for everybody but it seemed to work for me.
mdoyle··on What's your favorite app of all time?
Recently: Dropbox. Just Brilliant, solved all my problems.

Slightly off topic: MidWinter. Massive believable world, multiple forms of transport. This game sticks in my memory.

mdoyle··on Ask HN: MarriageLaughs.com
I like anything which makes light-heart out of things like relationships, politics. Its great to read other people's stories. Make the site more engaging so I feel compelled to contribute. I don't think accounts are a necessity for a site like this; anonymous posts are fine.
mdoyle··on Ask HN: How does having a baby change your life?
Having babies has brought more substance to our lives. We have 3 girls under the age of six and I am approaching 40. I wish we had them when we were younger if anything. Its difficult getting time to do everything.. full time job, spending time with family, hacking, starting up, etc. My girls are fantastic company and make me laugh constantly, and give me much love, They can take any stresses away in an instant. They can also add to my stresses when they are being 'challenging' young humans. They inspire me to do more for their benefit. I have been exhausted for the last six years and expect I will be until they leave home! There will be plenty of time to sleep when I retire.
