meetingthrower··on New 'super ice' 10 times stronger, bringing it close to the strength of concrete
Hoth
meetingthrower··on Ask HN: CAD for wood working with LLM support?
I am a woodworker mostly but do it all on pencil and paper. That said I have a 3d printer and cnc and fusion360 with the Claude mcp connector has been pretty amazing in my tests. One more year and it will be a new world.

I have gotten just "ok" at CAD. I'm not as productive as I should be because I avoid it. Really looking forward to this.

meetingthrower··on Americans' Drinking Remains at Record Low: Gallup Poll
Totally not what the numbers say in TFA. Big shift from beer to liquor (which I presume to mean cocktails for a big share of that.)
meetingthrower··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
My idea for innovative self storage pricing: offer free month 1, $1 month 2, $2 month three, $4 month four and so on. Very soon it obviously will become untenable, and you will either stop paying and get your shit out of there.

I probably would be adversely selected by people who really only need a couple months of storage. But would force people to work against their instincts to store all their trash.

meetingthrower··on OpenAI Agents API
Right but I do this in VS code and it does the same?
meetingthrower··on OpenAI Agents API
But it does have some very cool features built in I haven't seen rolled in elsewhere. Sessions can talk to one another out of the box. Two left arrows and you see all the sessions. Automatic remote control to pick up a session from another computer or even on your phone. So convenient!

I could patch this together with Herdr and OMP and some custom server stuff but it works right out of the box!?

meetingthrower··on Gemini-3.5-Transcribe
Recommendations? I have an openrouter account. Just don't know what might be good.
meetingthrower··on Gemini-3.5-Transcribe
I scrape them from their crappy VOIP system as WAV files, then send them through the API....
meetingthrower··on Gemini-3.5-Transcribe
I built a small little app for a company which transcribes all their customer service calls, does an AI review, makes a podcast of the most problematic ones (they LOVE this.) Probably 20 hours a day of transcription.

What are people using for cheap hosted models for this? (I don't want to run my own infrastructure.)

I'm currently using Gemini Flash Lite. I don't need real time, it's all batched, clear english... still costs some small $ a month. Figured it should be able to be reduced if there are cheaper models out there....

meetingthrower··on More than half of adults in U.S. say they lack basic statistical understanding
Nobody understands Bayesian approach. Look at Covid -- people FREAKED out when we updated guidance based on learning new information.
meetingthrower··on More than 10 firms pay up to $100k a month for access to Truth Social posts
Nice writing man.
meetingthrower··on DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731
What's the best harness to use with it?
meetingthrower··on Bending Spoons makes first post-IPO acquisition with $1.3B Airtable deal
Honestly the "charge by data" is probably missing some things. We have quite a few users on the free tier. I found out my ops guys were optimizing the data to keep on the free tier because it would jump from zero to [something still reasonable] but would be a multiple of seats. They would pay you SOMETHING but the big jump to MORE seemed too much for them lol.

They are on Grist by my recommendation after searching for tools. I just checked in on it after 6 months and they have built their entire manufacturing process management on it... Good stuff.

meetingthrower··on Bending Spoons makes first post-IPO acquisition with $1.3B Airtable deal
Second Grist it is very cool we use a lot of it. You can run python as a column/ cell and it doesn't have a lot of the limitations of Airtable. Usage tiers are ridiculously large. Free api. I am almost hoping they charge more so they stay in business.
meetingthrower··on Samsung reveals Galaxy Z Fold 8 that will compete with the iPhone Ultra
I wonder if it will work well as a "travel" computer? I could see leaving my laptop at home and taking this and a keyboard? Also it looks like it would be fabulous as an e-reader too, so I can drop Kindle and replace with keyboard in the bag.

That said I don't want to carry it or use it as my daily driver phone as I try not to use a phone in general...

meetingthrower··on The Chuwi MiniBook X N150, One Year Later
I have one and gave to my teenager. Unbelievable abuse for 3 years before it gave up the ghost after being dropped one too many times.
meetingthrower··on Show HN: Bento - An entire PowerPoint in one HTML file (edit+view+data+collab)
OMG coming from bigtime consulting this is...AMAZING. Thank you!
meetingthrower··on What did SFFA vs. Harvard reveal about admissions?
The Dartmouth analytics say that is true. The top 1% is taking from the top 10% in admissions.

That said, your view that they need "trauma" to get in is very wrong. You need to find a hook. The hook should be positive and not negative. (Why should they let you in to the private club?)

Source: I've gotten my kids into 6 Ivies. Non-athletes, white, public schools, and I am not a doner.

meetingthrower··on YC CEO says he ships 37K LoC AI code per day. A developer looked under the hood
That's a great way to put it: functional slop. That's what I mean tho - as long as it is minimally functional it does its job.

I totally get the shade thrown at ycombinator. But I guess my perception is that it has never been about the tech for them and more about getting quick hacks to get to market quickly. So it feels on brand?

meetingthrower··on YC CEO says he ships 37K LoC AI code per day. A developer looked under the hood
Correct. It's "good enough" for now and if it needs to be industrialized you can do that later. If it is brand new and has no traffic and is not exposing user data or opening up your keys to someone.... who cares how perfect the code is if it mostly works? Users don't have to use it...
meetingthrower··on The US Government Is Now a Shareholder in 26 Companies
I like the idea of getting a slice of the action for the country. I mean, to have a nice slice of profits or something would be really nice. You know the equity is nice in that only pays off if there are profits. What would be even nicer is just a nice permanent claim on profits, like 20% or something like that....don't we call that a tax rate? /s
meetingthrower··on Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5
Right. You hire the developer when you want a developer. But if I am building simple agentic workflows -- glorified automations with a small bit of structured "thinking" - I will sure use the cheapest API that can deliver that task at the speed I want.

I wonder where the market sizes will shake out for these different types of use cases? I am guessing right now 1 is bigger than 2 but not for long (by token volume)?

meetingthrower··on What Ozempic does to the gut-brain axis
To the others on this reply, I take 1/4 dose of the "clinical dose" and it has been life changing. I've lost 30 lbs. I've done that in the past, but for me that was harder than ranger school in the army.

I LOVE food. Eating out and family dinner were always important to me. I was very worried that I would lose my pleasure in this.

I haven't.

But now I can just eat 1/2 slice of pie. Or 1 scoop of ice cream, etc etc. I don't have the crazy urge to EAT IT ALL.

Also I loved drinking. I actually still love drinking. But I get done at 2.5 drinks. And once a week.

It adds up. Makes you wonder what free will is.Variance in GLPs are naturally occuring. I find the people who say "I forgot to eat" relatable now. Our bodies were not designed for abundance. At least not mine.

meetingthrower··on Michigan spent $1.8B and only created 602 jobs
The tfa says that almost all of this went to big public automakers. Enraging. I initially thought that this was going to some small biz thing that at least would slosh the money around through the owners. But nope - corp welfare!
meetingthrower··on AgentKits – 60 production-ready AI agent blueprints with guardrails
Interesting - if you're the author, I couldn't see quickly what data sources I would need to plug into it to make it work well (e.g, with the marketing agents doing account reviews etc?)
meetingthrower··on AI children's books, body horror edition
Right? Runaway Bunny, Goodnight Moon? Probably 1K times between my two kids.
meetingthrower··on Is AI ruining our skills? Early results are in – and they're not good
You are so incorrect here. If you feed it an evaluation rubric it will go after it! You really understimate the technology when in good and well intentioned hands. (Yes lazy people will use it to cheat and get to the answer faster. But it is like a grad student tutor who will do an evaluation in 30 seconds! Rapid iteration and laddering up...)
meetingthrower··on Is AI ruining our skills? Early results are in – and they're not good
100% you are so right. Don't rely on the LLM. It is a robot you give tools and context, and then you ask it to do something with that. It's amazing at that.
meetingthrower··on How to automate Instagram engagements with computer vision (and get banned)
on business pages they literally give you access to the posting API.... And you can automate against that. Not that they will give you much action on that without the sweet sweet accelerant of ad money.
meetingthrower··on Ask HN: How do you get into a flow state when using AI to code?
Welcome to management!!!
